Asphalt 9: Legends is a great arcade racer for Nintendo Switch, with a huge single player career, awesome graphics and a local multiplayer mode via split-screen.

In Asphalt 9: Legends splashy visuals come first, collecting unlockables comes second, and skill proves to be a distant third. Having said that, it's tons of fun, at least, if not in search of realism, and despite the lack of decent variety, not to mention the fact that it's an always-online product. Moreover, this can definitely be enjoyed in its original, free form, or by simply spending a bunch of pounds to purchase the Starter Pack if you need to save yourself from more than 10 to 20 hours worth of grinding, but beyond that, the game won't really force you to do anything more besides from playing it.

The graphics, the driving mechanics, the tracks, the vehicles, and the play time in Asphalt 9: Legends are all very good. The game is fun to play and challenging enough to keep the player engaged. However, the micro-transactions and some frame-rate issues do interfere with the overall experience.

"Freemium” games are a scourge of mobile gaming, and seeing it come to the Switch in such an aggressive way feels just as icky here as it does on your mobile device. There’s undeniably a lot to do here, but be ready to shell out some real money if you want to get the full Asphalt experience.

Perfect to play on the go and available for everyone for free, Asphalt 9 Legends is a fast-paced and well-structured game, with only a few excesses related to microtransactions, and a bit of grinding too.

A fun game at its core but can’t decide if it’s an arcade racer broken up with commercials, or a commercial broken up by an arcade racer.

Nothing redeems Asphalt 9. It's shallow, inferior game that has been built with the exclusive purpose of getting suckers to throw more money at it. This stuff should be left on mobile platforms or, better yet, never made.

It feels as if the team that worked on the game found a perfect balance of pay to play or the purist route of spending no money in game. There is an enormous single player campaign with lots of race variety, races, time trials and escape to name a few. The only downside to the story is that it's an always online game so you can't play on commutes or other wifi free areas one might want to play their switch. The online is pretty solid, it's easy to make a clan with your friends get extra rewards for playing the game, though bad connection can make it a bit spotty. There are awesome up to date leaderboards that really let you see where you stand in world rankings. The list goes on and on, so what are you waiting for, the game is free to play with 1000s of hours of content to devour! Expand

Very fun to unlock new cars and grow your garage. Some flags in career mode are nearly impossible to get even with the recommended rated/level car. The game becomes frustratingly difficult and that is why I'm giving it a 7 rating. It truly stops being fun as it becomes increasingly difficult. Expand

The controls. In the mobile version you can tilt your phone as little or as much as possible to steer your cars precisely, with a controller, you only have left and right, that's it. No analog support in a 2019 game is unacceptable. 2. Unbalanced online matchmaking. It's simple, pair players that have a similar car ranking and that are in the same tier. I get paired with vehicles nearly twice my power, and get destroyed, and lose some of my rating because of it. If you want to play this game competitively, only play the time trial events that come up, those are fun.

    3. Latency online. This may be only my problem, i'm not sure, but i often fail to score a take down on another player because of lag. It's very laggy at times, not to where my car teleports but the other way around. I haven't been able to try the split screen mode yet but i hope it's fun. All in all think it's an ok game, but for those wanting to progress as quickly as they can and get more vehicles by climbing leaderboards, winning online races, etc, i can see it to be an extremely frustrating experience. Just get Grid if you want a solid racing game.
