Humanity Fights A Losing Galactic War!
Their Only Hope: a Young Pilot and a Girl Forever Changed.

You are Roy Becket, a young pilot with dreams of becoming as skilled as his adoptive father. When a galactic war with an ancient mechanical alien race reaches its boiling point, Roy is forced to spring into action and take control of an otherworldly bipedal war machine in hopes of saving what's left of humanity.

Joining Roy is a young girl who claims to have escaped the clutches of the nefarious aliens. Forever altered through horrible experimentation, she now possesses the very abilities humanity will need to push back the doomsday clock.

Together, they must battle an unrelenting army alone and reunite their shattered family.

The End of All Things is in sight. At the edge of eradication stands Astebreed.

    - Arcade Shooter Evolved
Astebreed takes the classic arcade shooter and breathes new life into it. Using lovingly crafted 3D models, cutting edge particle effects, and tried-and-true Japanese mecha designs, Astebreed delivers an unparalleled atmosphere of beautiful destruction.

    - A Full Arsenal
Roy has a considerable arsenal to combat his foes, as well. Armed with the mysterious Lucis device, Roy's mech can shoot from a distance, paint targets for precision homing attacks, and even get close for a killing blow with a powerful blade attack. No enemy shall escape your wrath, no matter where they hide.

    - Dynamically Perspective
Your enemies are not always ahead of you. Your enemies swarm, fly and intercept, and Astebreed's dynamic perspective always keeps the action in view. Seamlessly switching between veritcal, horizontal, and 3D shooter, Astebreed will keep you guessing what your next threat will be, without ever interrupting the action.

With its shifting planes and the constant switch between ranged and melee combat, it manages to offer just enough extra spice to help it stand out, although the lack of an English dub makes its story nigh-on impossible to follow unless you understand Japanese. Still, developer Edelweiss has made an effort to make its previously unwieldy controls fit the confines of the Switch's control interface - although you really should invest in a Pro Controller if you want to enjoy Astebreed at its best. It's not a masterpiece then, but remains worthy of investigation if you love the genre.

I've only played 10 minutes and apparently it's only an hour long game but what a fun 10 minutes.

I'll start by saying anyone who likes Sin

I'll start by saying anyone who likes Sin and Punishment on the Wii, will like this.

Astebreed is a rails shooter with Japanese voice and English subs. It is set in beautifully coloured, cyber fantasy landscapes and it looks great.

You play in a mecha suit and have guns, slash, melee, special and dash attacks.. Some bullets can be shot and slashed, some just slashed and some have to be evaded.

The direction of play swaps between forwards (in a rails aspect) and horizontal and vertical scrolling.

It is a fast and fine looking bullet hell but not so hellish that it is just a mess of constant bullets but it does have some frantic moments where the screen gets filled.

It does drop frames but it didn't spoil anything for me and handheld is a no go with my crappy eyesight but I suspect it might be a bit busy with on screen content for a small screen.

I just found it to be exciting from the get go. I did stop after the intro play, to watch the tutorials and it definitely gives you a better understanding of your attacks and defence.

Ive not been so pleased at £3 in a long time and would happily pay the usual non sale £10. I do think the game would have benefited from a Sin and Punishment style of motion controls for aim and targeting and it would have been great if it was made longer but I'm not docking any points for its negatives, as the whole package is top class. Like I said, I'm only 1/6 in to a very short game but I would have paid my £3 for that.

At the end of the day it is a mecha rails shooter, so if that isn't for you then don't waste your time but if you don't have enough time to game much and want a good bit of shoot em up excitement, then this will be right up your street.

It makes the old Neo Geo shooters I sometimes play look like crap. It's way more fun. I really wish there were more games like this.
