Astral Chain consists of varied genres, but is mostly an action game, which has great ideas and interesting, relaxed humour, that doesn´t spoil its serious plot. [Issue#298]
  2. Sep 30, 2019
Astral Chain’s brilliant combat system is married with calm investigative activities, interesting platforming and clever puzzles. The world is fascinating, the soundtrack is amazing, the story is captivating. This is one of the very best games by PlatinumGames - and of the year.
  3. Sep 5, 2019
Astral Chain is one of the best action games I’ve ever played and is now my favorite title from PlatinumGames because of how it manages to deliver solid action and be innovative at the same time. The investigative sections and unique relationship formed between player and Legion bring something fresh to the action genre as well. When PlatinumGames is able to branch out with interesting new ideas like with the first Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101, they usually strike gold, and Astral Chain does nothing to stop that trend. It stands as a shining spot in both Nintendo and PlatinumGames’ lineups, and is obviously one of the best and most innovative games to release in 2019.

Home to an incredibly immersive world and the best combat on the Nintendo Switch, Astral Chain is a must-play not only for fans of the genre, but the medium as a whole. It is a title that understands the importance of balancing gameplay, story, and style without ever sacrificing substance for anything else. It's more accessible than most PlatinumGames titles without ever having to compromise its core mechanics. The slower start may alienate potential fans but sticking with Astral Chain leads to a surprisingly thematic script, incredibly deep combat, and what might be Platinum's best game to date.
  5. 100
The entire game, really, is fully worthwhile, a lean 20ish hours of gameplay with nary an ounce of gaming fat, or a moment you won’t enjoy. That’s the beauty of tight battling: It never gets old, always feels brilliant.
  6. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is yet another addition to the Nintendo Switch library that will be fondly remembered for decades to come. Its yin-yang of chaos and carnage, fused with the calmer subtleties of investigation and exploration makes returning back to the action that little bit more special every time.
  7. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is one of the most confident, stylish and satisfying third-person action games we've played in quite a while. While its narrative might be melodramatic, battles and enemy encounters always deliver a thrilling but balanced challenge.
  8. Aug 26, 2019
A one of a kind combat experience and Platinum’s most well-rounded adventure to date. A killer combo in every sense of the term.
  9. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is the next step in the hack & slash genre. PlatinumGames created a true masterpiece that everyone should play. Another epic addition for the Nintendo Switch's exclusives library.
  10. Sep 23, 2019
Astral Chain is one of the best Hack 'n' Slash titles in recent years and a reliable asset for Nintendo to help them in the Console war.
  11. Sep 9, 2019
Astral Chain brings together gameplay elements from all of Platinum’s best, from Bayonetta to Transformers Devastation, and adds the secret spice of detective work to tie it all together. It’s easy enough for newcomers to the genre, deep enough for veterans, and one of Platinum’s best.
  12. Aug 26, 2019
Platinum Games shows its luster with an awesome hach 'n slash videogame that powers up the action genre with a great combination of elements: exploration, investigation, puzzles and even some platforming gameplay. A great exclusive title for Nintendo Switch owners.
  13. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is one of the best experiences of the genre on Nintendo Switch. PlatinumGames has managed to revitalize the gameplay and take its complexity and sensations further than it has ever done before. The combination of character and legion implies having to take into account double the elements while fighting, which at the same time allows for better combos and a comforting sensation whilst carrying out whatever movements we want to.
  14. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is a fantastic character action game that reimagines the subgenre at its core with a completely original and immensely satisfying combat system.
  15. 95
Astral Chain packs the punch you would expect from Platinum Games while simultaneously going above and beyond in all other areas. It’s great to see Platinum stepping even further out of its shell with expertly crafted titles like NieR: Automata and now Astral Chain. This marks another game in the studio’s catalog that is nothing short of amazing.
  16. Sep 6, 2019
Astral Chain is set in a somewhat boring and repetitive demon world you have to return to a bit too often, but that’s the only tiny downside to this daring and triumphant new Platinum adventure. It has everything that makes action adventures fun and adds exceptional detective phases that offer a welcome diversion from the wild action.
  17. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is a brilliant action adventure game, with everything you could expect from a PlatinumGames title: fast and deep combat, rich visuals and a surprising story that reminds us of Nier Automata.
  18. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is, without a doubt, one of the best games ever released by Platinum Games and one of the best Nintendo Switch exclusives to date. With its combination of explosive action gameplay, which masterfully blends together mechanics taken from previous games developed by the studio, engaging investigation and exploration mechanics, an enjoyable story and huge amount of content, Astral Chain is a game that no fan of action games should pass on. That's even in spite of some issues here and there, such as the low challenge level and unbalanced evaluation system that makes it too easy to get S+ ranks.
  19. Aug 26, 2019
A great directorial debut for Takahisa Taura. If you love action games and own a Nintendo Switch, this brilliant jewel is definitely a must have.
  20. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is something special that only Platinum Games could develop: a game both satisfying and tough.
  21. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is an excellent action game that uses the Switch’s unique hardware in creative ways. It fits handsomely in PlatinumGames’ excellent catalog and should satisfy anyone who likes Japanese action RPGs, or third-person action games. It is a wholly satisfying experience.
  22. Oct 8, 2019
PlatinumGames has surly shown that they still got it in the action game genre and are still leading game developers there. The two-character combat is bombastic and exciting, the detective exploration system is truly great and the story and characters tie all that together in a nice package no one should miss out on.
  23. Sep 26, 2019
Astral Chain is a wonderfully fun and ambitious action title with a great gameplay hook that improves the more you master the basics. It’s yet another example of why PlatinumGames continues to be one of the best in crafting a unique action-adventure hack-and-slash.
  24. Sep 17, 2019
Astral Chain is a unique and beautiful game that excels at what it’s trying to do. It’s one of the best games of the year so far, and it makes me excited to see what the studio will come up with next.

After the peerless Bayonettas, this is the best game Platinum has yet made - and better yet, it reflects a developer growing in talent and ambition. [Issue#337, p.108]
  26. Sep 12, 2019
Some unpleasant forays in the Astral Plane, an occasionally unhelpful dodge, and a dearth of combos hold the game back slightly, but despite these shortcomings, combat still feels robust and exploration is a welcome change of pace. Overall, Astral Chain is a wonderful synthesis of stylish character-action, RPG elements, and a novel central hook that manages to tread new ground despite its many points of influence.
  27. 90
While fans are waiting for Bayonetta 3 to finally come out, PlatinumGames has released yet another gem on a Nintendo platform with one of their best and most entertaining combat systems to date in Astral Chain.
  28. Sep 9, 2019
With Astral Chain, Platinum Games are officially cementing their status as one of the best action game developers in the market right now. Great gameplay and fantastic setting set the stage to one of the best Nintendo Switch games of 2019.
  29. Sep 4, 2019
Aside from the lackluster co-op and slow start, Astral Chain is one of those rare games where it’s difficult to say anything bad about it. The story and world building may fall short of the masterpiece that was NieR: Automata, which also involved Astral Chain director Takahisa Taura, but I dare say this is the best combat action in a Platinum Games title to date. The dual control of one of the Howard twins and the Legion in an innovative twist in battle and makes combat as fun to watch as it is to play. The exploration and detective work make The Ark a world that I wanted to protect from the Chimeras. Astral Chain is one of the best games of 2019 so far and may even be remembered as one of the greatest Switch exclusives.
  30. Sep 3, 2019
Astral Chain also suffers a little from repetitiveness. Every mission is broadly the same thing. Hang out at the Police Headquarters, investigate a crime scene, head into the Astral Plane, repeat. The scenery changes, but not the structure and it would have been nice to see a little more done to break up the sections of the game. Ultimately, these flaws are outweighed by the awesome combat and the stylish world. The game looks gorgeous and makes the most of the Switch hardware. The soundtrack is catchy and the game is just a hell of a lot of fun to play. PlatinumGames and the Nintendo Switch have another hit on their hands.
  31. Sep 2, 2019
Platinum delivers another winner with Astral Chain. Fans of fast-paced action games shouldn’t hesitate to pick this one up.
  32. Aug 29, 2019
Astral Chain is one of the most exciting new IPs I've played in years. From its stunning combat design to its gorgeous visuals, it packs a punch in almost every area. Combat feels incredible and the Legions add a huge amount of options to how you tackle any given battle. Some may fault the game for its more quiet moments and investigations, but the contrast they offer to the frantic action, feels near-perfect in its execution.
  33. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is pure Platinum Games, with frantic and unique combat system, great worldbuilding and some interesting additions in term of gameplay.
  34. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is every bit as awesome as it looks in motion, which is to say it’s downright incredible.
  35. Aug 26, 2019
I had a blast playing Astral Chain and didn’t want it to end. Platinum has created a wonderful new universe for players to dive into that I could see extending into anime, movies, and hopefully sequels. The dual-character gameplay is also brilliantly devised, and although not as difficult as PlatinumGames’ other titles, creates a duet that makes you feel like a powerful, unstoppable force. The story may be the weakest part of the experience, given just how much it changes trajectory, but it has some legitimately great moments, and a big twist I didn't see coming. All told, this is one hell of a game.
  36. Aug 26, 2019
PlatinumGames has developed a superb blend of combat, investigation and stealth in Astral Chain. It’s a game that keeps you on your toes – for better or worse – and like any other title in their arsenal, requires players to get good quickly or die trying. For fans of Bayonetta and Devil May Cry, Astral Chain is a must-buy. An explosive action game that demands your attention.
  37. Aug 26, 2019
With its amazing visuals, fantastic presentation, varied gameplay and deep, rewarding combat, Astral Chain could well be PlatinumGames' most accomplished game yet. It mixes detective work with exhilarating battle sequences that are inventive, challenging and – perhaps most importantly – breathtakingly cool. The complexity of the game's myriad systems may prove intimidating for some players, but the inclusion of a co-op play and the ability to automate many of the mechanics via the 'Unchained' mode means that even complete newcomers can still enjoy the ride. Astral Chain isn't just one of the Switch's stand-out hits – it's one of 2019's best video games.
  38. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is a superb original release on the Switch, a sophisticated action-adventure worthy of the PlatinumGames brand and absent of compromise, primed to become a new successful franchise.
  39. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain could is one of the best games on Nintendo Switch, period. PlatinumGames has proved, once again, that no one does stylish action games better, and I sincerely hope we get to return to the Ark again someday.
  40. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is a must-have for Switch users. We are absolutely in love with its concept and design, and it proves, once again, how PlatinumGames are the masters of this genre.
  41. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is up there with Platinum’s best games. Once jumping into the story I wanted to keep playing, looking forward to seeing where it would go next. For everything I’ve written here, there’s still so much I feel I’ve left out. While it’s a long wait for Bayonetta 3, Astral Chain is an outstanding game on its own. If you’re a fan of action games or sci-fi anime, Astral Chain is a must buy.
  42. 90
Astral Chain combines all the best impulses of Platinum Games with a unique combat system and rich RPG mechanics. The world, story, and atmosphere are icing on the cake - this is one of the best overall packages from the studio and a remarkable directorial debut for Takahisa Taura.
  43. Aug 26, 2019
With a bit of extra care – or better, with less focus on everything that's not combat and simply more triumphant action – Astral Chain could have been even a bigger bang. As it is, it's a superb exclusive and one of the best games of 2019: not bad for a completely new IP, one that in more than a way truly is PlatinumGames's magnum opus.
  44. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain takes action and RPG elements and raises them to a threshold of magnificence thanks to its combat mechanics, rich content, stunning art style and absolutely marvelous soundtrack. The result is a masterpiece that is worth way more than the sum of its parts and the best new IP to land on the Nintendo Switch, attesting yet again to the role of Platinum Games in developing unique and unforgettable games.
  45. Aug 26, 2019
A brilliant game that’s deep and offers accessibility for people who struggle as well as people who want to master every inch of the combat. In a crowded marketplace, Astral Chain stands out as a unique, interesting game that you’d be foolish to pass up on.
  46. Aug 26, 2019
Another classic action game from Platinum that’s so full of ideas it seems fit to burst and yet everything not only works perfectly but is filled with an infectious sense of goofy fun.
  47. Aug 26, 2019
In the first few hours, I was all over the place when it came to an assessment, as it can take some time to really turn it up.
  48. Sep 9, 2019
Astral Chain is Platinum's best action game in recent years. It perfectly melts action and RPG elements together, and of course, it worth playing for multiple times. If you love action games, don't miss it.
  49. Aug 26, 2019
Once again, PlatinumGames delivers a great action game with a fun and intense combat system. That said, the real reason Astral Chain shines is thanks to the synergistic action game that feels like something fresh and with great potential.

  52. Aug 27, 2019

  54. Nov 7, 2019
Despite the hardware limitations and a handful of odd design choices, Astral Chain is one of the best new IPs to hit in recent years and one deserving the attention of every Switch owner.
  55. Sep 15, 2019
Besides the lacking story and some minor technical issues, Astral Chain is a solid action game filled with epic fights, a great choice of music, and a wealth of content.
  56. Sep 9, 2019
Astral Chain is the latest and most accomplished model of PlatinumGames' ability to combine stylish action with player agency and accessibility. Exhausted storytelling and haphazard platforming also continue to underline their limitations. If Nier: Automata sought balance between power and ambience, Astral Chain finds power in power. It's a pure, grandiose spectacle.
  57. Aug 30, 2019
It’s a game that provides a traditional PlatinumGames experience with immersive, fast-paced and breath-taking battles and a system of exploration that spans the various levels the game’s world can offer. Despite a few shortcomings, Astral Chain is a game that can keep players busy while waiting for the big, upcoming entries for the Switch.
  58. Aug 29, 2019
This might as well be Platinum’s most ambitious game yet. And while they definitely don’t hit every mark, the technical achievement and the mix of varied elements will help you over a few shortcomings.
  59. Aug 26, 2019
PlatinumGames is back. Astral Chain offers extraordinary graphics and easy-to-learn controls, as well as an interesting story from the first second. A game that cannot be missing from any Nintendo Switch collection.
  60. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is a detective story of the near future, a game with a crazy rhythm and direction. However it is around the gravitational field of its combat system that sensational qualities and unexpected flaws rotate. We’re still talking about a memorable, amusing, tachycardic experience, doped by a techno-aesthetic power that flexes Switch's muscles like only Nintendo managed to do. Despite certain flaws endemic to their work (unmanageable camera on all), PlatinumGames confirms itself as the king of stylish action games.
  61. 85
Astral Chain is the most ambitious game Platinum has ever made, and is for the most part a success. It would be tempting to use the old idiom, “jack of all trades master of none” but specific elements of Astral Chain excel far too greatly to refer to Platinum as anything other than masters. The combat, story, and music are some of the best you’ll find on Switch. That being said, there are clearly areas in which less focus was placed. Given your character’s role as a police officer, I found the gradual de-emphasizing of the investigation mechanics to be a tad disappointing. A few areas of the visual design could also use work, but they’ll hardly affect enjoyment of the game. Ultimately, what we’re left with is one of the most exciting and original action games on Switch, if not the most.
  62. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is PlatinumGames newest adrenaline shot, that's clearly inspired by a lot of previous titles from the studio. It takes the best of out of all those games and delivers a kick-ass adventure that's a must play for the fans.
  63. Aug 26, 2019
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Astral Chain seems to have been developed with that awareness because every element of the game has been thought out with care and worked out just as careful.
  64. Aug 26, 2019
While Astral Chain's storyline is filled with anime archetypes and familiar plot tropes, it all works well as an overall experience.
  65. Sep 12, 2019
I have to give Astral Chain a lot of respect. It’s a concept, a theme, and a design philosophy that feel a little dated–but are delivered really well. A rare breed, and one that’s welcome.
  66. Aug 29, 2019
Astral Chain is the most diverse game PlatinumGames has made and offers fascinating and varied gameplay. Some elements, such as the platforms and the silent protagonist, are not completely visible and the Switch itself seems to collapse occasionally under all this content, but the flashy action and the cool police work make up for that.
  67. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is undoubtedly the most complex work from Platinum Games, and at the same time one of the most eclectic and distinctive in the history of the Osaka studio.
  68. Sep 23, 2019
Astral Chain is a very welcome addition the Nintendo Switch’s library and PlatinumGames’ portfolio. Some areas are stronger than others; the combat and style are both excellent, but platforming sections are less engaging and the game’s doesn’t make full use of its interesting premise and setting by preferring to go into more straightforward anime melodrama. It’s one that’s well worth checking out for RPGamers and non-RPGamers alike.
  69. Sep 18, 2019
This review has largely been gushing, but I want you to know that Astral Chain isn’t perfect. The non-combat side of the game is often fairly pedestrian and the story can be pretty overwrought even if it is largely told in a knowing, tongue-in-cheek manner. With that noted, this is absolutely a worthy successor to Nier Automata – and like that game, Astral Chain is definitely a contender for one of my favourite games of the year.
  70. Sep 16, 2019
As it is now, Astral Chain is a great action game with a few blemishes. It might not be perfect, but it should be a high priority for any Switch owners, and fans of the action genre as a whole.
  71. Sep 13, 2019
For as empty as the story can feel, it really speaks to how remarkable much of the rest of the game is that it ends up being worthwhile overall. If you care about action games, Astral Chain is worth experiencing for yourself. The mechanics underpinning combat are generally fantastic. Not to mention Astral Chain has some absolutely ridiculous and visually striking boss fights. With a better script or structure, Astral Chain could have been an all-time classic, but as it stands, it's still a pretty great Platinum game.
  72. Sep 12, 2019
If only more big-league developers dared to be this bonkers, the industry would be that much more untamed.
  73. Sep 11, 2019
Astral Chain is fun, flashy and flows extremely well ... once you get a hang of its plentiful and often overwhelming mechanics . The game looks and sounds great for the most part, but the world leaves a lot to be desired.
  74. Sep 11, 2019
Astral Chain successfully combines great action, exploration, and puzzles together with a strong narrative. Despite a few problems with pacing and repetition, it's a fun, engaging, and above all original experience.
  75. Sep 9, 2019
All in all, Astral Chain is a solid and enjoyable action-RPG. It suffers from a lot of Platinum Games' most common problems, such as poor instructions for basic gameplay and an over-reliance on minigames, but the charm and enjoyment of the core game more than make up for that once you get past the rough opening. It's not quite up the highs of a Bayonetta or Nier Automata, but it's worth playing for fans of the company or those looking for a fun action-RPG on the Switch.
  76. Sep 4, 2019
If you ask if something is possible for you or your Legion to do in Astral Chain, most of the time, the answer is yes.
  77. Aug 29, 2019
Astral Chain is one of PlatinumGames' finest acts this generation, cementing itself as yet another stellar exclusive for Nintendo Switch. It doesn't reach the heights of excellence achieved by Yoko Taro's NieR: Automata, but can more than hold its own thanks to an excellent setting, experimental combat and so, so much style it hurts.
  78. Aug 27, 2019
Astral Chain is one of Platinum Games’ most complex and satisfying action games to date, with combat that’s suitably fast but far more purposeful and careful in execution. Its gorgeous world and enticing premise are betrayed by an uninteresting story and characters, but there’s little else to fault when you’re teaming up with your legions and solving cases across different dimensions.
  79. 80
Astral Chain is both beautiful and mesmerising. You’re not likely to come across a better action gameplay system for quite some time – likely until PlatinumGames’ own next effort. Truly this is a developer that understands the principles of movement in action better than any, and while its games might struggle in other areas to meet the brilliance of the action, every second with that action is satisfying, exciting, and a very pure form of entertainment.
  80. Aug 26, 2019
Occurring in a beautiful anime setting, Astral Chain is a real treat for the players. The gameplay mechanics, focused on the link between the main character and its Legions, are really engaging, but only in solo mode unfortunately. With this game, PlatinumGames confirm their status as masters in Beat'em-all games making.
  81. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is loud, brash, exciting, and, in the end, a warning about the dangers of unquestioned loyalty. Its hyperkinetic action sequences and colorful characters might make the game seem like it isn’t interested in offering more than intricately designed fights and a straightforward genre story, but stick around for its entirety and its cast of 2070s police officers show themselves to be more than just cartoon cut-outs of sci-fi cops.
  82. Aug 26, 2019
A stunning action game, well optimized, greatly rythmed by a dynamic OST and by some of the best fighting scenes we've ever seen in a Platinum production. It's a shame that the ending missions aren't as interesting as it should, or that the platform sequences aren't a strength.
  83. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is the directorial debut of Nier Automata designer Takahisa Taura, and it proves that he's a creator worth paying attention to. Part melodramatic anime, part overly complicated Tamagotchi, it's an eminently playable action role-playing game that delivers the pleasure of good teamwork in a way few singleplayer games accomplish. Building on action design ideas seeded in Nier, Astral Chain encourages you to bond with your beloved pet cybermonster both on and off the battlefield. Then, it teaches you how to fight as one.
  84. 80
Astral Chain is a unique experience from beginning to end, but some strange choices in the way it tells its story and major pacing issues in the third act bring it down. Regardless, Astral Chain fits right in amongst the Platinum greats, offering a fun and unique battle system that does a fantastic job at differentiating itself from its contemporaries.
  85. Aug 26, 2019
I am insanely impressed with the world that Platinum has built-in Astral Chain overall. It is gorgeous, the plot is intriguing and it feels like something new when it comes to the investigations and police work. While the combat mechanics might need cleaning up it’s cool that the dev team at least had the foresight to realize that might be a point of contention but there was still a lot left to offer, hence casual and unchained mode. And you really can’t fault a game for making contingencies for all types of players.
  86. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain boasts the same winning elements of Platinum’s finest work – exhilarating combat, characterful visuals, and a compelling story – but it loses a bit of personality. Where Bayonetta and 2B provided an emotional centre point for the fantastical storytelling, Astral Chain’s unnecessarily silent protagonist is a charmless creation saved by an utterly charming world.
  87. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain's shortcomings don't overshadow what it does best. It's an incredible execution of a fresh take on Platinum Games' foundation, standing among the stylish-action greats. And its own anime-inspired swagger makes fights all the more exhilarating. You'll come to appreciate the calmer moments in between that add variety and offer a second to relax before jumping back into the superb combat. After 40 hours with Astral Chain, I'm still eager to take on the tougher challenges, and I'll be grinning from ear to ear as I hit all the right moves, one after the other, while watching it all unfold.
  88. Aug 26, 2019
Astral Chain is a cyberpunk action-adventure game developed by Platinum Games for Nintendo Switch. This game takes the best ideas behind previous Platinum games and mixes them in a crafty way, injecting all of them in a new concept that links the player to a creature through a chain. A compelling story and a beautiful character design make the rest, even if the level design and the progression system fall short, and this is the biggest downside.
  89. Aug 27, 2019
Astral Chain shows a vast potential, but the game suffers from various problems, from a badly written storyline to a imprecise gameplay. On the plus side, its universe is very appealing and has a nice variety of things to do.
  90. Sep 22, 2019
Astral Chain is a different take on Platinum Games action formula and deserves a chance if you're a fan of their previous work. Although the battles never quite reach the same level of finesse and variety as in Bayonetta, there are still a occasions in the game that come close. The interaction between our character and its Legion is the big draw, but unfortunately there are times when we are forced to fight without it. Half of the times because our Legion attacks straight on, the other half because we ourselves fumble around with the right stick. But if you have plenty of patience, Astral Chain works superbly at least until it's time for Bayonetta 3.
  91. Aug 29, 2019
I think Astral Chain is a special game. There’s not anything else that’s quite like it and I admire how much it shakes up the PlatinumGames formula. It doesn’t fully succeed at everything it sets out to do, but the foundation is solid enough to improve upon. Astral Chain is an exhilarating ride that never let go of me once it clicked. If it ever sees a follow-up that irons out its problems, then PlatinumGames may truly have another new classic on the horizon.
  92. Aug 26, 2019
It's tough not to consider Astral Chain something of a small disappointment, especially when you know Platinum Games' talent for beat 'em ups. We not only highly commend the fight mechanics in this latest title from Takahashi Taura, but also its universe — original and supported by a high-class artistic direction. However, the overall game is pulled down somewhat by a structure of missions that doesn't match the studio's desire to mix the beat 'em up and investigative genres, and further by large approximations and other technical problems — all of which have a significant impact on the enjoyment of the game.

Sprawling, varied and constantly stylish, Astral Chain is a very different breed of action game that ranks with Platinum's best. [Eurogamer Essential]

I came into Astral Chain expecting a nice action game with a pleasant anime aesthetic, a a scoop of ice cream with a cherry on top. Platinum Games gave me a giant sundae piled high with whipped cream and sliced fruit and chocolate sauce. And nuts. Pecans. Love those pecans. What I wanted is there, and it’s good. There’s just so much more, and I love it all.

If you’re not into all the side cases, you can skip a lot of them and still have a good time, but you'll risk missing out on some nice upgrades and fun combat scenarios and puzzles.

What begins as a dark meditation on collecting pocket monsters gradually becomes a blunt, but effective, soap opera about life in shitty times. Astral Chain is about the urge to inspire good, not just by hurting the enemy, but through helping those around you. It’s also wonderfully welcoming, an action game for everybody that provides an escape to a world on fire where good people can do right. Forget Game of the Year. Astral Chain is a game for this moment. [Polygon Recommends]

Astral Chain tries to be so many different things that it can be hard to describe what it actually is. But that’s also what makes it so interesting. It’s flawed and confusing, heartfelt and electrifying. It’s the kind of thing you can’t put a label on — or a name that lets you know what you’re in for.
  6. Aug 26, 2019
It’s not that there are no original ideas in Astral Chain, no bright spots or brief respites from the boring loop. It’s that for nearly 30 hours, the ones that show up are either underdeveloped or else go uncultivated in favor of something fundamentally rehashed and reheated.
