Where it falls short on that title is the absence of a meaningful single player option (beyond duelling with AI), which the premium shift in price perhaps merited. Apart from that the retro-tastic soundtrack keeps all battles thrilling along with a smart, convenient control-scheme that makes any spare moment accessible for play. It's certainly one to consider for those seeking local multiplayer thrills on their Switch.

It’s not feature rich, but Astro Duel Deluxe is another title making excellent use of Nintendo’s console vision.

Astro Duel Deluxe is a fun, retro inspired and pleasant looking space shooter that makes use of well developed local multiplayer modes, as well as catchy little details which make this a good element on the Nintendo Switch catalogue. It falls short in terms of content and if it had an online multiplayer mode it would certainly be much more appealing, as the one-player mode can feel like it ends too quickly.

This is simply one of those games that has an uncomplicated premise, with a variety of game types that affect the win conditions more than the game itself. And that’s exactly what a game like this needs to be. While I wouldn’t recommend the game by its own right, I see this being in a lineup of a bunch of local multiplayer games on the Switch with friends. On its own, there isn’t much there for you.

It’s by no means bad, but Astro Duel Deluxe suffers because of the lack of an online option, and it just doesn’t have enough variety to keep you entertained for long.

Astro Duel Deluxe is easily the least impressive game visually on the console, does little to nothing to show off your fancy new tech, and it isn't all that fun for more than half an hour at a time. I will say it has a decent soundtrack -- not "$15 for short bursts of gameplay" decent -- but pretty good.

This is a console that does not need lesser local multiplayer experiences to bolster it up.

The pilot hunters mode is great (you have to destroy their spaceship and then kill the tiny pilot as they desperately try and evade long enough for another new spaceship to appear.

There's a few different maps to play presenting their own challenge and various different power-ups which can really change the nature of a fight.

In single player there are a few different options for play and although the critics seem to say it lacks a campaign type mode, I can't see how that would work. Of course like most things it'll be a better game played against your mates!

If you're a fan of retro gaming then you should really think about buying this one as it's well designed and simple enough to be picked up by any gamer.

However, the game features very few modes, in which you practically can only play against other people. The game does allow you to play against bots in a single-player mode, but the game really isn't worth your time or money for just that. Fun for playing with a group of friends, but due to so many Nintendo games in general being based on that idea, I can't really recommend this game as so many other games do couch co-op fun with friends better than this one. The arcade graphics are nostalgic but don't really add anything. The controls are super wonky and most shots against opponents seem like they land on target through luck rather than actual skill. And the games out there like Towerfall Ascension show the potential of this genre, and really make the need to own this game go out the window. I do have to say the touch screen applications of the game, in which 4 people can hold on to separate corners of the screen to control your ship are really interesting, and could be utilized by other games as well, but it isn't a really great way to play only because the screen isn't quite big enough for 4 sets of hands. Recommended for anyone who wants to mess around with a game with friends at a drinking party, but that's the only time I could see pulling this game out. Expand
