Bayonetta 3 is an experience filled with a constant feeling of surprise, quality of life add-ons, dynamic and electrifying action and an epic story. Though it lacks visual refinement, the end result is a must-play for fans of the series. Although unfortunately there is still male gaze imprinted on the game, being a woman and playing with such powerful and fun characters such as Bayonetta, Viola and Jeanne is a huge joy.

Where many western games yearn to be seen as the height of sophistication, craving the critical kudos of an HBO drama, Bayonetta 3 stands defiant in its absurdity. Like its predecessors, this is destined to go down as a cult classic – a dizzying dance of demon-dicing delight. Its crude, whiplash-inducing narrative means it certainly won’t be for everyone, but the best things in life rarely are.

Its unruly attitude is its calling card, the manic beating heart that its exquisite combat is built around. And if this sounds like a good time, then Bayonetta 3 could well be the most fun you have with a video game all year.

PlatinumGames has delivered one of the greatest action games ever made. Bayonetta’s most spellbinding witching hour yet represents not only the series at its climactic best but an ever-heightened benchmark of what the developer has looked to achieve within the genre. This Game of the Year contender comes out with its stiletto-heel guns blazing for an unpredictable thrill-a-minute spectacle that I never wanted to end. There’s nothing else like it.

Bayonetta 3 is an action masterpiece, offering a veritable feast for fans of the Umbra witch and closing out the trilogy with the biggest and best entry yet.

Bayonetta 3 cranks up the chaos, improves the combat, polishes the level design, and adds a ton of new mechanics to the mix, making for the very best entry in this storied series to date. PlatinumGames has absolutely nailed it this time around, carefully layering on more ways to engage enemies, piling on the OTT gameplay sequences, and giving us multiple protagonists without upsetting the balance of what makes these games amongst the very best examples of their genre. With excellent performance in docked and handheld modes, incredible visuals, non-stop action, and a hugely replayable campaign that's a joy from start to finish, this really is a huge celebration of everything we love about Bayonetta, an action all-timer and one of the biggest highlights of 2022, on Switch or any platform.

As a game, and as a tonic for people sick of buying season passes and DLC, Bayonetta 3 is an essential romp; a love-letter to classic Nintendo games that delight in making you laugh, smirk, and feel like an absolute badass. PlatinumGames has misfired a little lately, but with this fitting conclusion to the original Bayonetta trilogy, the studio proves it can still fire on all cylinders and then some. This might just be one of the best games on the Nintendo Switch.

Bayonetta 3 is the best title from PlatinumGames for creativity and implementation of unique ideas on the gameplay side. A sum of what the Japanese studio can do, and this saga, from the aesthetic and narrative side. A sumptuous display of style and substance, an explosive third chapter in a series that elegantly places itself at the top of stylish action: a perfect Apotheosis.

Bayonetta 3 definitely marks the comeback of the Platinum Games witch. With this new adventure, Bayonetta proves once again that she is the queen of beat'em up by offering battles that are still as exhilarating and spectacular as ever, which are sublimated here thanks to many new weapons and the mechanics of summoning demons. which changes the way of fighting. In addition to being a superb beat'em up, the title does not forget to offer a certain variety, both in its more open levels and in its game phases, in particular by making us play other characters like Viola and Joan. And then, the adventure is all the more pleasant to go through as it benefits from a high frame rate in combat, an epic staging, but also a more serious scenario which delivers a grandiose outcome. . Obviously, this episode is not perfect for all that, with its sometimes messy confrontations, its graphics far from being impeccable or its wiser side than usual, but it remains a new memorable adventure nonetheless. Clearly worth the long wait.

Bayonetta 3 brings back our beloved Umbra Witch alongside a bunch of other characters and a story that is not afraid to risk it all. It is the perfect game for both veteran players and newcomers, and its most powerful traits are the gameplay, its humor and a bewitching OST.

Bayonetta 3 closes the trilogy of our favorite Umbra Witch with its best installment to date. The gameplay, including giant monsters and Viola, is simply phenomenal. All that combined with an engaging story, an outstanding soundtrack and the charm of the same old Cereza we all love makes for the best hack and slash on Nintendo Switch.

Bayonetta 3 undoubtedly ranks among the best action games out there, and is one of the most ambitious projects out of the PlatinumGames forges. Such a weight makes the technical realization creak, in turn constrained by the limits of the Switch, however the end result is a party for all fans of these games and the charismatic Cereza.

This is clearly an "all-in", an action masterpiece born from all of PlatinumGames' possible ideas and resources. Bayonetta 3 it's unapologetically extreme, and never stops to impress or surprise with its constant changes and amazingly layered combat system. If you had any doubts about Platinum's actual status, this game should eliminate any worry.

Bayonetta 3 turned out to be fresher than I expected thanks to Viola (an additional heroine with her own fighting style), side chapters that reward stealthy approach, and the ability to summon demons who aid you in combat. However, as much as I applaud introducing new features, I must point out that they are a bit less polished than the mechanics we’ve seen before. Despite some little problems Bayonetta is still one of this year’s best games and a must-have for every Switch player.

As the series goes big this time Bayonetta 3 is more personal than ever. It’s creativity and larger than life characters boast a huge amount of fun while it’s scope is mindblowing. I know it’s a dying breed of a game but even in it’s last breath it goes with bang. All action fans and series veterans should play this magnificent gem of a game.

Bayonetta 3 excels in its combat, music, voice acting, and scale making it essential for fans of the series, but it has a few technical issues holding it back. This is definitely PlatinumGames' most ambitious game yet, and an excellent exclusive for Nintendo Switch.

It took five years for Nintendo Switch gamers to get their hands on Bayonetta 3, and it was well worth the wait. If Nintendo decides to fund a sequel, then it seems likely that Bayonetta 4 will wind up on the next-generation Nintendo console, and perhaps that entry can address this one's sometimes-disappointing graphics and story problems. Platinum apparently has ideas for at least nine Bayonetta games, and if they're even half as good as Bayonetta 3, they should all be an incredibly fun time.

Bayonetta 3 is held back by the hardware limitations of Nintendo Switch, but this naughty sorceress is cunning enough to shake off those chains. She brings a lot of perfect, crazy fast fun, so imaginative that you won’t get a chance to be bored.

Ultimately, I’m left with mixed feelings about Bayonetta 3. Not seriously mixed. It’s still a great game, among the best in its category, and I’ve rated it accordingly. But there are choices made here, both in terms of the narrative and the overall design, that I think could have gone another way and made for an even better game. There’s also no question that the performance issues are disappointing in a genre where split-second timing is so crucial. Bayonetta 3 carries the ball for the series well enough, even if it ends up being the weakest of the trilogy.

Bayonetta 3 is a fantastically stylish game with invigorating gameplay, empowering music and a narrative that reaches deep to pull on the heart's strings. Despite its understandable graphical affordances and its slightly rushed story, it makes for a show-stopping, action-packed experience that can be enjoyed countless times over.

There’s a lot more to Bayonetta 3 than there was to the series’ prior titles. A lot of it works really well, offering a game that’s far larger in scale while still nailing the core action the series is known for. While the lack of focus may stop it from being quite as strong a total package as its predecessor, the high points here are as good as the series has ever been.

Overall, Bayonetta 3 is an incredibly fun game. I like the new mechanics, the new enemies are fun to fight, and it has a lot of laugh-out-loud moments. I just wish all of it wasn't surrounded by a dreary tale of multiversal failure leading into a rather bittersweet ending. If you don't care about the story, the game has few flaws that I can think of. It plays great, is full of amazing absurdity, and was absolutely worth the wait for any fan of the franchise. In the long run, I think Bayonetta 2 is my favorite of the franchise, but Bayonetta 3 is still a remarkably good entry in Platinum's best series.

Platinum made Bayonetta 3 an almost impeccable game. Its combat system is exciting, fun, easy to learn and full of depth, and its level design always brings a lot of unexpected surprises. Although the plot is not very substantial, but with the excellent animation performance, the whole story was told quite wonderfully. Bayonetta 3 is a masterpiece not to be missed for most players.

Bayonetta 3 is the sequel that takes the saga down new paths with new mechanics, new playable characters and flirting with the theme of cinema and TV of the moment, the multiverse. Overall, Bayonetta 3 delivers a frantically intense approach to “stylish combat”, with a complex and multi-layered combat system that has remained remarkably robust across each game in the series. While the presentation is hugely over the top, Bayonetta 3’s real worth is in how it plays and as such comes thoroughly recommended to anyone that can keep up.

Platinum Games‘ return to form manages to deliver one of the most action-packed and over the top games of recent memory. Bayonetta's demon slaves enrich the already deep combat even further and are both fun to watch and control. Sure, the story is as convoluted and uninteresting as ever, not all of the game‘s many mechanics and set-pieces are as polished as the combat and the Switch‘s aging hardware doesn’t do the graphics any favors. But if you like your action games fast, fluid and completely bonkers, this is a tour de force that packs enough punch and content to be worth the asking price.
  39. Bayonetta 3 made a great comeback after a long break in the series and managed to become one of the best in the action genre. Its minor shortcomings can be ignored thanks to its innovations and fun gameplay.

Platinum Games has long been looked at as a leader in the character action genre, and Bayonetta 3 is a prime example of why. It’s fast, reflex intensive, and features challenging combat that allows for a ton of creativity and expression when it comes to the ways in which you’re able to dispatch your enemies. Both its story and its performance on the Switch are less than ideal, but neither are issues that are substantial enough to get in the way of its top-tier combat, out-of-this-world weapon variety, and inimitable style. This is a far more ambitious sequel than its more iterative predecessor, and that ambition more than pays off. The new Demon Slave summoning system and several other changes to how weapons work help reinvigorate what remains one of the best combat systems throughout all of video games.

The Witch of Umbra is back, and in a way where she looks spectacular, intense, and very entertaining, but at other times, its game encounters both visual and performance problems that detract from the experience. Fortunately, in its overall execution, Bayonetta 3 is a shining example that, when they put their minds to it, PlatinumGames can still make outstanding games.
  42. Oct 25, 2022
    90
Bayonetta 3 is a brilliant feat of video game design. It makes a commitment to absurdity from its very start, and makes that commitment its greatest strength. The Demon Slave abilities give us the largest-scale battles in the franchise, and the introduction of Viola is like an homage to the purest hack and slash games of the past. Everything about this title screams passion, competence and personality.

Bayonetta 3 is Pure Platinum again. Technical uncertainties partially weaken the visual appeal, but do not sufficiently reduce the overall audiovisual footprint and do not prevent the adventure from achieving excellence. The third chapter of the saga is a continuous discovery, a fireworks show dedicated especially to fans of the Witch of Umbra. In support of a flair and a variety of very high thickness stands a highly calculated gameplay, a combination of controlled chaos and trotting spectacularity. There is a lot, in Bayonetta 3, all that is needed to allow Platinum's work to represent the apotheosis of action games.

It's impossible not to fall under spell of Bayonetta 3. More extravagant, frenetic, rich, varied and with even more monstrous and epic bosses, the game is the franchise at its best. However technical weaknesses, the few underwhelming environments and the readability issues can't counter the avalanche of the superlatives. A dance mastered without almost any misstep and a must-have on Switch.

Bayonetta 3 is one hell of a good time. There is never a dull moment in this action/adventure threequel that’s sure to take your breath away. Even if your only knowledge of Bayonetta is that she’s one of the many characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, now is the perfect time to see what this extraordinary franchise is all about. With polished combat mechanics, gorgeous visuals, and masterful storytelling, Bayonetta 3 is simply bloody brilliant.
  47. 90
Bayonetta 3 is the kind of game that makes you wonder where a series could possibly go from here, because I can't imagine a sequel being bigger or better than this. Platinum Games pulled out all the stops for this one, both expanding on the Bayonetta franchise as it was and learning from other games they made in years between to bring the franchise to a new peak. The game is constantly swinging for the fences, and while it may strike out a few times it manages to hit plenty of home runs in the process. It’s been nearly five years since Bayonetta 3 was first announced, and after years of silence it finally seems that it was absolutely worth the wait.

Everything about Bayonetta 3 is ridiculous – from the dimension-hopping storyline to the devastating finishing moves and the Infernal Demons you can possess. But that’s exactly what fans have come to expect from the franchise, and it makes for an exhilarating experience that only Bayonetta can deliver. It’s hard to see how anyone could leave disappointed; just remember to take a breather every now and then.

It took a long time, but Bayonetta is back with a fantastic adventure. The story drags you in and the gameplay provides you with delightful action scenes thanks to in-depth combat and plenty of other things to do, to keep you entertained. Add to that an excellent soundtrack and you will enjoy it to the fullest. Other than that, Bayonetta 3 has some minor flaws, but they are nothing serious compared to the overall package. A highly recommended game.

I'm not sure whether it's because of the game's fantastic music, the use of the word "verse" to refer to encounters, or her over-the-top style, but when I think of Bayonetta I can't help but imagine her as a popstar. Bayonetta 3 feels like her Las Vegas residency: a lavish and spectacular show where each number is beautifully choreographed, every song is a banger, and the guest appearances are sure to delight. It’s a fast-paced and joyous adventure that achieves its goals with an abundance of charisma and style. While it might have taken the better part of a decade to get here, the queen is back, and she's ready to serve.
  52. 90
It’s good that we’ve had a creative vision as pure as Bayonetta, and now we’ve seen the developers push it as far as it will go. Thanks to excellent characterisation, a true understanding of how to work with both hyperbole and surrealism within a narrative, and a ridiculously complex, but rewarding, combat system, Bayonetta 3 has been well worth the wait.

Bayonetta 3 is a near-perfect game. I’ve never considered that the combat in Bayonetta or its sequel was missing anything in particular, but the third game’s new inclusions are so well refined that it may be difficult to return to the previous titles having experienced this one. Furthermore, the story, despite a few confusing points, has easily cemented itself as my favourite of the three. Not only is this one of the Switch’s best titles of the year, it’s truly one of its strongest to date.

Bayonetta 3 is easily one of the best games Platinum Games has ever made! With great fluid combat systems and tons of variety, Bayonetta 3 brings back everything that worked in the previous installments, duplicates it all, and adds some great new fun innovations. The only thing that really holds this title back is the limitations of the Switch hardware.
  56. 90
Bayonetta 3 successfully reinvents itself in many ways to offer an experience that feels worthy of the title of sequel. It successfully shakes up the combat from the previous games by implementing new abilities that help keep things familiar but fresh. Some of the gimmicky battles bring the pacing down and dreaded, but ubiquitous Switch-related performance issues remain. As a whole, Bayonetta 3 eclipses its predecessor and is truly one of the most bombastic and enjoyable action games you can play.

Bayonetta 3 is an outrageous and fitting return to form for the umbra witch and her posse of occultish heavy hitters. Substantial improvements and additions to combat mean there are seemingly endless options for different styles of play, as well as making the prospect of revisiting each stage, verse and hidden objective more compelling than it ever has been, with the crowning jewel being Viola’s introduction into the franchise.
  62. Oct 25, 2022
    90
Bayonetta 3 is the series’ best entry yet, offering an engaging universe-hopping story, bombastic cinematic moments, and refined action that’s both accessible and deeper than ever before. The game can feel slightly hemmed in on the Switch, but Platinum pummels every bit of possible performance out of the hardware. Whether you and Bayonetta have history or not, this is an engagement not to be missed.
  63. Nov 14, 2022
    89
Bayonetta 3 broke anew its own action that had already peaked by previous titles. While refining the existing combat system, the game also tried to expand by adding new elements. The addition of a new element can be felt awkward, but they all fit together as if they were there all along. However, it is hard to believe that this is the title to closes the original saga, especially where it shows the most clumsy story in the entire series.

Bayonetta 3 may have fallen a little behind the previous adventures of this charismatic witch, but even so, it has turned out to be a very complete game that, when focused on pure and simple action, gives us absolutely incredible moments thanks to a system of novel, accessible, fun and very deep combat and a staging that takes the show by the flag to leave us totally stunned with its choreography and the scale of the conflicts in which we will find ourselves submerged. And in the end, those virtues are the ones that end up prevailing in the face of the irregularities of its development and those that remain in our memory after the title credits, which leaves us with a very positive balance.
  67. Oct 25, 2022
    87
Bayonetta 3 hits the same notch like the first two parts, but establishes some new cool features, especially FOR the active use of the Demons. The overexciting action is still fun, but suffers a little bit from being too easy and not well balanced. Overall, Bayonetta 3 is a good Hack and Slay game, but also one that can't fully reach its predecessors.

It's been a long time coming for Bayonetta 3, but PlatinumGames has delivered once again. While the technical aspects are disappointing, new additions like taking control of Bayonetta’s giant demons are awesome. Whether or not you enjoy this game is dependent on what you’re expecting from it. In the world of hypersexual, campy, insane action games, this sets a new standard. Every successive boss fight raises the bar, the action is always intense, and it oozes charm. There’s more move variety, the characters are beautiful, and the tone is impossibly over the top. If you’ve bounced off of Bayonetta games before, I can’t promise this time will be different. The pacing and core gameplay loop remain largely intact. But for fans of the franchise, Bayonetta 3 is easily as good as it gets. If you loved the first two games, you’ve got to check out this one.
  71. Oct 25, 2022
    85
Bayonetta 3 is an action adventure that seeks to surprise in the variety of options and situations. It maintains the excellent combat of its predecessors and adds the summons as a great claim: more spectacular but also less challenging. When we fight with the witch of Umbra or with Viola - her phases are great - everything goes smoothly and it is the delivery we expected for rhythm, variety and quality of weapons, as well as some interesting advanced mechanics for higher difficulty levels. But the game falls short in many of the new proposals that are interspersed, from uninspired puzzles to minigames, going through sequences or combats that are too simple and not very dynamic. With all this, the fact that its predecessors set the bar very high does not hide the reality: this is a very good game and an essential for Switch.

Platinum Games no longer hits the mark with every title, but luckily they do with Bayonetta 3. The game doesn't look as nice as I had hoped, that has to be said. Otherwise, this is again one of the wildest and most creative action games I've played in years. Hopefully Platinum will give us three more Bayonettas!

Do you want more of Bayonetta 1 and 2? That's Bayonetta 3! It keeps the heart and soul of the first two games in every sense, but adds even more fun ways to pound your enemies into the dirt with style. Its chock-full of action set pieces, each more ridiculous than the last — it stays at 100% almost the whole time. Our favourite witch is back in black!

As magnetizing as when it debuted 12 years ago, the Bayonetta series remains a reference in terms of beat 'em up. Far from the intimate character of the last God of War, the witch of Umbra spits in the mouth of the narration to bet everything on the verb and the skill. Extremely deep combat system, pounding bosses, insane pacing from first to last chapter.

With this third episode, Bayonetta asserts its domination over the 3D beat them up with new daring and destabilizing mechanics, but which lead to even more enjoyable and powerful combinations than before. An excellent core game marred by a flawed technique that causes problems of precision and readability of the action, which is particularly problematic for a game of this type. No need to sulk in your pleasure though, the witch has once again managed to bewitch us during the fifteen hours that this new journey lasts.

By pure chance alone, Bayonetta 3 feels fit for the moment. At a time when loving Bayonetta feels *complicated*, Bayonetta 3 is a relentless, unashamed celebration of Bayonetta; of this character, of her companions, of the demons she fights alongside and of the outrageous spectacle that is the hallmark of this series.

Insanely over-the-top action spectacle that plays in the usual first-class manner, but lags behind its predecessors in detail.

Bayonetta 3, for the vast majority of its runtime, is an absolute blast. It's bombastic, over-the-top, and extravagant for the sake of extravagance, leaving ruins, literally, in its wake. I'm already going back through each level trying for better scores, and I have no immediate plans of stopping. I may be hesitant about the series' future, but at present, this is the best Bayonetta has ever been.

Bigger is not always better, but Bayonetta 3 does more right than wrong when trying to surpass everything that has been done with the series before. It is a bold game that is thrilling to play, and a truly wild ride from start to finish.

As ridiculous and as unruly as it’s ever been, the five year wait for Bayonetta’s third outing ends on a predominantly satisfying high. Finding enough new ways to make its decade-plus old combat formula feel fresh and exciting all over again, Bayonetta 3 is at its loveably over-the-top best when everything is focused squarely on the combat, the combos and the pursuit of the best ranking to add to one’s collection. Even new faces like Viola provide interesting enough divergence, even if the narrative material — much like the main story throughout — isn’t as strong by comparison. It doesn’t always get the balance of spectacle and execution spot-on, but Bayonetta 3 doubles-down on the familiar parts that matter and succeeds with just how creative combat can get. Bayonetta 3 is the quintessential PlatinumGames outing that despite its brief issues is just too engaging to ignore.

The only thing that keeps this game from becoming one of the best Character Action games ever made and a must buy for fans of the genre is funnily enough, the Nintendo Switch itself - The console and company that gave it life in the first place. Great level design and very fun ideas are being held back by mediocre graphics and an unstable framerate.

Bayonetta 3 is not a perfect game. It doesn’t look as good as possible nowadays, bit makes you forget about that really fast. The action is bizarre, stylish and fast paced and the game offers enough variation to make you enjoy it for tens of hours.

After playing Bayonetta 3, I found myself wanting to spend a lot more time getting acquainted with the first two games in the series, and I think that says a lot about the world PlatinumGames has created. Bayonetta's unique sense of style and humor really sets the series apart from other action games on the market, and it's easy to see why the character has proven so endearing. The game's over-the-top humor and sexuality probably won't win over anyone that didn't care for the first two games, and not all of the Demon Slaves are enjoyable to use. Despite these minor flaws, Bayonetta 3 delivers an experience that shouldn't be missed by series fanatics, and is well worth trying for those new to the series.

After many years of cooking and boiling at Platinum’s cauldron, Bayonetta makes her return to Nintendo’s most recent console. And that’s probably not a great choice, as the visuals are struggling with Switch’s outdated hardware. Still, the magic and charm of the series are here, better than ever, while taking the players on a trip across time in the series’ multiverse and preparing them for an eventual end and a new future for Bayonetta…or not.
  90. Bayonetta 3 won’t be for everyone, and that’s OK. There’s room for all sorts of oddities in our modern gaming landscape. And if you’re willing to just sit back and be wowed by a mountain of manic mayhem, chances are you won’t regret the time you spend with Bayonetta in her multiverse of madness.

Bayonetta 3 is a good game and the best genre representative since Devil May Cry 5. The developers really strove to breathe some fresh air into the series. At the same time, however, it's disappointing as a sequel, as it plays it too safe.

Bayonetta 3 is the third instalment of the series, featuring new playable characters and a wide array of beautifully designed monsters. The ability to control Demon Slaves is endlessly fun and running around as Bayonetta feels very fulfilling. While this game does have its flaws, I think it’s a hack-and-slash that almost anyone can play.

Bayonetta 3 is like your party animal friend on a night out. When it starts out, it feels like the most fun you've ever had, you'll remember it for a lifetime, you never want it to end. Then as it goes on you've lost track of where you are, your feet hurt, you just want to go to bed, and she's still going. Too much game is never a bad thing for some 'pennies to enjoyment ratio' players, but Bayonetta 3 overstays its welcome and dips from being an all-time classic to just being a very, very good video game. It's not the all-time top five Switch game that I think it might have been with a few different decisions here and there, but it's still a must-play title.

Bayonetta 3 is the series’ wildest entry to date, mixing PlatinumGames’ knack for fast-paced combat with unbelievably entertaining set pieces that just get bigger and bigger. Bayonetta 3 is an ode to the longtime fans who've stuck with the game since 2009. While it's certainly not without its obvious flaws and missteps, I can't imagine that fans would be very disappointed with how this third, explosive entry has turned out. Bayonetta 3 brings plenty of the series charm and excitement back after all these years. It meanders a little more than the previous game but still keeps the pace with the wild bombastic (and silly) sequences to keep you on your toes. Bayonetta 3 has a lot of issues, especially in terms of story, but is well worth playing for the core combat. While the game seems to be doing its best to get you away from that, once you’re fighting, there’s nothing like it out there.

Is Bayonetta 3 worth playing? If you’re already a fan, absolutely. Just don’t expect it to be the absurd larger-than-life addition than we all hoped it would be. If you’re on the fence about it – this isn’t going to be the one to change your opinion. The combat is still there, even if it is starting to rust up with age. There are still signs of that unhinged expressiveness the others are renowned for under the layers of bleak environments and flat out boring narrative. The whole thing can still often look colourful and eruptive, but is heavily anchored by the limits of the Switch – truly a cruel fate for what could be one of the craziest worlds to experience in a game if Platinum Games would be set free to do as they please. It really is a shame, especially after such a long wait. It’s not a bad experience by any means, and it did have fairly unreasonable expectations to live up to, but it ended up falling rather short in just about every way. For any other series that might be satisfactory, but not for Bayonetta. It deserves better than just ‘good’.

Ultimately, we’re left a little conflicted with Bayonetta 3. This is the worst looking and performing Bayonetta yet, with a grander scale that both detracts and adds to the gameplay. We love the fact that we can finally take control of fearsome demons, for example, but we don’t like the fact that the camera struggles when fighting other gargantuan enemies. Add in some other frustrations, and you have a game that sometimes feel like the best the Bayonetta series has to offer, but other times the worst.

Bayonetta 3 is a good time when it allows itself to be. It consists of an excellent core experience buried under superfluous bilge, an otherwise quality experience interrupting itself to such a degree as to drag down the entire experience. The high notes are high enough to ensure a genuinely quality game, but the incessant sidetracking into mediocre stealth gameplay, mundane alternate characters, and half a dozen other deviations holds it back from being truly great. Thank god for trainsaws and spider women though, because they do a heck of a lot to keep this game entertaining.

Those diehards mentioned in the opener above will be happy to know that the level grading system is back, and locked to the higher difficulty setting, which ties into those that want to learn the intricate and subtly deep nature of things. For everyone else who’ll still be scratching their heads at the ludicrousness of it all, from go to whoa, at least you can rest easy on the idea that it’s okay to mash your way through here, and that for Bayonetta, this is all pretty standard stuff -- OTT served with a side of sass, sexuality and style.

When it’s firing on all cylinders, Bayonetta 3 serves as a confident reminder of why we’ve been looking forward to its release for so long. Unfortunately, the number of misfires can’t be overlooked, making this easily the least enjoyable game in the series.

There seems to be an apparent disconnect between what fans loved about Bayonetta and what Platinum thinks fans loved about Bayonetta. Whether it’s the story that feels compelled to make sure the entire cast is by themselves or the gameplay that overly relies on giant enemies, everything feels like it could have used another pass. The game is enjoyable but isn’t an experience I’d like to return to, like the first two entries of the series. This is disappointing as dancing with Bayonetta has always been a wonderful time before now.

For a game made by the same studio responsible for the previous two Bayonetta games, it’s strange how often Bayonetta 3 feels like a poorly made fan project. The story that has been built up has been thrown to the wayside to introduce a tired “multiverse” concept. All the confidence and character development has been completely scraped in favor of turning her into a loving motherly type character in constant need of saving. Wonky camera angles and visuals make it look like this game should have gone back into the over for another year. It’s playable and, at times, fun, but as part of a series, it’s quite possibly the weakest chapter.

Despite featuring what's arguably the best combat system in the series, Bayonetta 3 is nothing short of disappointing. Bayonetta's core gameplay is outstanding, weaving fluid controls together with incredible weapon variety and tons of fun mechanics to play around with. The combo potential is high and battles just feel great to play… as Bayonetta. An unforgiveable amount of playtime is dedicated to newcomer Viola, stealth segments that make poor use of Jeanne, and relentless gimmick stages that wear out their welcome immediately. Tossing in mediocre level design, lacklustre performance, and a flavourless story that panders towards the current multiverse craze, it's clear PlatinumGames has lost its magic touch when it comes to the Umbran Witch. Bayonetta 3 is simply mediocre, at best.

Bayonetta 3 is chaotic, spectacular and as funny and changeling as you can expect from Platinum Games. Is a must have. [Recommended]
  2. Oct 25, 2022
In all of the best possible ways, Bayonetta 3 is leaning into the parts of itself that are more earnest than ever—all while going harder than ever on doing whatever it takes to simply be cool as hell. If you're looking for a strong, coherent storyline, this was never the series for you. But if you are a fan of flashy spectacles, a varied and creative arsenal, and larger-than-life characters, Bayonetta 3 more than delivers.
  3. Oct 25, 2022
Bayonetta 3 might not be as consistently brilliant as its predecessors, but when it's good it's next to godly; playing as Bayonetta with her entire suite of toys unlocked is as electrifying as it's ever been, a spectacle of sinewy combat and S&M excess that's uniquely, defiantly video games. It's so over-the-top that trying to make sense of it would be a mistake, and while the rough edges are a disappointment if you embrace the chaos there's a lot to love here. Bayonetta 3 is overstated, in parts underbaked - but it's rarely less than a thrill. [Eurogamer Recommended]

  5. Oct 25, 2022
I don’t know what to tell longtime Bayonetta fans about this game, let alone the newcomers hoping to come aboard with this installment. If all you care about is button-ramming combat that’s similar to Devil May Cry, you’ll have a ball. But if you ever wanted to believe that there was something deeper to Bayonetta’s story — some grander statement about femininity and sexuality and power dynamics — you’ll find the truth to be quite a disappointment. Viola did tell me at the very beginning of this game that it would reveal this fundamental truth to me. I only wish I could have lived in ignorance for a little while longer.
  6. Oct 25, 2022
When Bayonetta first came out, everything about her — her extreme sexuality, the way she dressed, her exaggerated movements — became this incisive parody about female video game characters. Bayonetta leaned so hard into those old stereotypes of the male-gaze-defined video game heroine that they became her strength. Her sexiness makes her powerful. It’s right there in the text, because the harder she fights, the more naked she becomes. She delighted in this empowerment and so delighted me for a whole decade before the last 30 minutes of Bayonetta 3 erased all of that to fit her into the box she once stomped on in four-inch, gun-strapped heels back in 2009.

It's full-on Bayonetta action, but much BIGGER and BADDER, a masterpiece!

Well, it took FOREVER for Nintendo and Platinum to release Bayonetta 3 and I'm only too glad it's finally here. I absolutely love the Bayonetta series so I replayed Bayonetta 1 and 2 back to back in readiness for this. Was Bayonetta 3 worth the wait? You bet! While I'm relatively early in the game, I can assure Bayonetta fans that Bayonetta 3 introduces new mechanics like the monster-controlling Demon Slave move very early on, so there's no time to feel as if this is just a same old Bayonetta game. When I first activated Demon Slave, it brought back the same feeling as when Mario first took over the T-Rex in Super Mario Odyssey. There's a certain "weight" to the monsters you control in Demon Slave, and it feels good. Because of the much larger scale of monsters you control, some fights are really between giants - a bit like King Kong vs Godzilla. This makes Bayonetta 3 the most epic in terms of scale of some battles.

If you're new to Bayonetta, you're in for a treat. Bayonetta is an action game. An over-the-top action game. The signature of Bayonetta games is the crazy, over the top, non-stop bombastic action sequences and combos you can do. In this 3rd outing all the crazy over the top action moves remain, and certain levels have some exploration to be done, but some other things are different. For example, you upgrade your abilities in a slightly more "RPG" way and the enemies seem more agile and fluid than their rather rocky and hard predecessors. In some way, it makes them just slightly more challenging than the early baddies from the early games. But with the ability to change difficulties anytime, you can change it to whatever suits you best. Of course, the original voice of Bayonetta has changed hands from Hellena Taylor to Jennifer Hale. I prefer Hellena's voice due to stronger inflexions but I think I'll get used to Jennifer's eventually.

As for the story (no spoilers here), right at the very beginning of the story, I thought, no way they're doing this to Bayonetta but I'll leave you to discover the story! All in all, I can say it's certainly worth the wait for the Umbran Witch's return. Bayonetta is just brilliant as ever. Love it.
