Bloodroots is one of the most confident indie games to release on Nintendo Switch, sure to appease players with a fetish for violence, score-chasing and an enticing narrative. It’s the complete package.

You could sum up Bloodroots as a derivative of Hotline Miami, but the final product stands farther apart from that game. The weapon variety and depth gives different levels a distinct personality and the world itself offers a bombastic, naturalistic cartoony style. But what I keep coming back to as my favorite part of Bloodroots is its versatility. The action is ultimately easy to grasp, requiring only three buttons, but you can stylishly do so much with those base ideas thanks to the oodles of weapons and smartly designed levels. Paper Cult stuck the landing on this vibrantly violent game.

While some overly long levels and a few frustrating hazards threaten to hamper the game’s enjoyment, the amazing and cathartic action in Bloodroots still finds a way to power through these flaws in order to help deliver one highly enjoyable game. Be it the swift yet nicely chaotic gameplay that offers a good chunk of strategy and buckets of blood, the stylistic and attractive art style with a lot of flavor in every bit of scenery, or the simple yet captivating story, there’s a lot here to enjoy. Rain bring Paper Cult the strength, for they have earned it.

While Australia still doesn’t have Hotline Miami on the Switch, Bloodroots helps to fill that fast-paced violent wound. When you work out how to chain your attacks around the many arenas it feels great, although it can be too unforgiving. Bloodroots revels in ‘everything is your weapon’ slapstick, managing to keep it interesting across the three acts. Paper Cult has delivered a stylish bloody revenge tale that will grab your attention and stab you with it.

Bloodroots is a fantastic indie action game - it looks gorgeous, it plays even better. If you're a fan of games like Hotline Miami or even just action games in general, this is one worth checking out.

Bloodroots is madness in all the best ways… and in one of the worst. Difficulty is well balanced, and even when combat gets truly maddening, the experimentation the title offers is so much fun, it's hard to complain. However, when trying to platform through the many perilous environments, it becomes obvious where its faults lie. The camera and controls in these sections work against what's otherwise a very fun brawler, and drag the experience back from true excellence.

BloodRoots is unfortunately not as fun as its initial promise would have made us think. Despite the undeniable fun given by the freedom of butchering your enemies with an infinity of items, the repetitiveness of its gameplay mechanics, its imprecise collisions and idle camera runs short after a couple of ours.

I've got it on sale and I think it was worth the price from sale... It's a fast paced action game with one hit KO mechanics. It's a quite funI've got it on sale and I think it was worth the price from sale... It's a fast paced action game with one hit KO mechanics. It's a quite fun game, but it gets really boring with time. Also, it has obligatory bonus levels which are time challenges.

IF IT'S AN OBLIGATORY THEN IT'S NOT A BONUS LEVEL!!

Those challenges were the worst, I've got quite far in game but the boredom and those "bonus" levels made me drop the game. Maybe, I'll go back to it in the future, but right now I have better things to do/play (I HATE obligatory bonuses, especially when they are time challenges. Time challenges are the ones I dislike, especially fast paced time challenges...)
It's not a bad game, it's just not for me.

the idea ist pretty good but the execution is a little bit underwhelming. the game is at its best when it plays like hotline miami or katanathe idea ist pretty good but the execution is a little bit underwhelming. the game is at its best when it plays like hotline miami or katana zero. But unlike those streamlined games bloodroots feels unrefined.
Starting with the graphics which make it hard to see whats going on. In a game that requires fast reflexes and quick thinking this can be a dealbreaker. The camera is zoomed out way too far for no reason which makes it hard to see the action. A lot of times i died because of an enemy or weapon i did not see. Sometimes i didnt even know what killed me in the first place or didnt see the weapons i need to grab at all. This becomes really frustrating.

Also there is a lot of unnecessary platforming in this game which doesnt add anything to the experience. The isometric view makes it hard too see where you are jumping or on which level you and the enemys are. Together with bottomless pits and instant kill death rays this also becomes relly annoying.

There is a lot of potential and if the devs would have focused more on the core gameplay mechanic and making it enjoyable, this would be an awesome game but unfortunatly there is just so much that doesnt groove with the action gameplay. if there ever is a patch that fixes the camera and maybe adds an assist mode, that color-highlights weapons and enemys i think i would really enjoy it. But as it is now i would recomend buying the other two games mentioned.

It feels like the positive reviews are purely based off the style, which I'll admit, is pretty cool. Just play Hotline Miami or the excellent Apeout instead. Expand
