It's hard to stay mad at Chocobo GP, though, even when you're hit with what feels like an endless barrage of magic. The game's just too bright and cheerful. Obviously, your mileage is going to depend on whether you're a fan of Chocobo. Not just Final Fantasy, but also this specific series of cute mascot characters. If you are, though, you couldn't ask for a more loving treatment. The expansive roster, the adorable presentation, and the quality kart racing mechanics will combine to give you something that you just might prefer over Mario Kart. The latter might be a bigger and tighter racing experience, but Chocobo GP has a killer weapon up its sleeve that makes all the difference: Chocobo.

Chocobo GP is a nice game for classic Final Fantasy fans who wanted a good alternative to the Mario Kart series. However, its lack of much variety and amount of microtransactions keep it from being a standout game.

The races can be fun under the right circumstances, but it will get repetitive fast and the annoying menu music will never get any better. It’s likely that many things will be addressed such as the lack of variety in tracks as it seems possible more will be added down the line. Right now at release, however, Chocobo GP is utterly barebones and pales in comparison to so many other kart racers before it. It’s a disgrace to see this title even released how it has, especially when Mario Kart 8 is getting a DLC expansion that’s half the price in a little under a week. To give credit where credit is due, Ben the Behemoth is a cute character that would probably have an adorable plushie worth buying, but it’s not enough to make Chocobo GP worth picking up for anyone.

Chocobo GP is a fun game. It is, yes, "more of the same". It doesn't introduce any super elaborate or even new mechanics, it just recycles everything that the games of the genre already bring to the time. But it's fun, familiar and… cute. Of course, how enjoyable the game is can depend a lot — also — on how much of a fan of the Final Fantasy franchise you are. It's easy to be convinced by the cuteness of the characters (Chocobos!!!!) and have fun with the game. It's not a phenomenal game, but it can give you a few hours of fun, especially if you're playing with family or friends.

Chocobo GP is not armed enough to compete with Mario Kart. Beyond the limited number of circuits, it is above all their failed design that makes racing boring. The driving also lacks finesse and the races become a real mess. It's not enough to place items and vehicles on a track for the magic to work; it also takes a good dose of mastery to find a good balance, something that Square Enix will never have been able to find.

It's possible that Chocobo GP could become a respectable kart racer in the future, and the free-to-play version means everyone can try it out without needing to spend any cash. As it stands, the game needs work, as the current product just isn't fun. The spells and abilities need to be toned down and the tracks need redoing or replacing. There is no shortage of kart racers on the market, especially on Nintendo Switch, and there are much better alternatives available right now than Chocobo GP in its current state.

Horrible monetization brings an otherwise decent racing game down to a 0 out of 10. There's simply no way to justify the microtransaction shop in this full priced Switch game. Square Enix has been on a spree of bad releases lately and this is another casualty. Expand

Still enjoying the game, it's built incredibly well and definitely a lot different from Mario Kart, but the whole microtransaction thing just ruins what would be perfect otherwise.

The game feels like a really cheap, unbalanced mess with an onslaught of crappy free-to-play mobile mechanics (in an already full priced Nintendo switch game...). Drifting kind of sucks and doesn't feel very responsive, even if you hit a wall whilst drifting you just continue at full speed like in Mario Kart Tour. On top of that though, some of the turns are just ridiculous in that you can fall off the map with seemingly no way to avoid at times, making for a really inconsistent stop-starty feeling to some of the races.

The dialogue in the campaign is truly awful and is seemingly aimed at small children... Why even have a campaign? Just give us the characters and let us play?

Maybe try the free version to get your own verdict but I really wouldn't say the game is worth it right now.

"Huh? You've run out of consumable XP stickers and the season pass just became an unbearable grind? You say that even though you've been placing first during races, without the added XP boost, you're getting next to nothing in XP? And it's leaving you stuck in your season pass progression? That's terrible! Well, don't worry, because we'll sell you some more stickers, and they only cost a little bit of in-game currency. The cost? Roughly 50 cents each! Huh? Sorry but we only accept payments in mythril. That's our in-game currency. How do you get mythril? By buying it from us using real life money! Huh? Sorry, but 10 dollar increments of mythril is the smallest amount that we carry. If you want your 50 cent sticker, you'll have to buy 10 dollars worth of mythril to pay for it. What's that? You'll just save the rest of the mythril? Well, it expires. Huh? You say there's nothing really that great to spend this on right now? Well, it sucks to be you then. Thank you for your business! Happy racing!!"

I actually bought the "full" version of this game game, and so far THIS has been my experience.
