If you’re someone who finds reward in developing deep mechanical understanding in games and is willing to die, a lot, in a bleak and uncaring world in pursuit of this understanding, Dark Souls Remastered could be a new favourite.

Dark Souls on Switch was another chance for me to fall in love with the world of Lordran once more. It's an experience that's a perfect fit on a handheld, and it's one of the most compelling apps Nintendo's burgeoning platform currently has to offer.

Dark Souls: Remastered is the improved version of one of the most influential and unforgettable games ever made. It delivers a mysterious and expansive world to be explored, which will reward with many wonders those who brave enough to face its dangers.

While Dark Souls Remastered on Switch possesses some odd quirks and isn't as technically impressive as its current-gen counterparts, it still retains the heart of what the original game is all about.

A well aged fantasy/horror action RPG, that even those who have never played before should definitely give a chance. Don't be scared off by the stories of how difficult it is. (Though also know, those stories are true.)

Seven years out from its first release, people already know what Dark Souls is all about and probably know whether that type of brutal gameplay is for them. Love it or hate it, it is what it is. The Switch version doesn’t change that experience. It does run extremely well on the system, and it looks pretty darn good. The failure to adhere to Nintendo button conventions isn’t exactly exclusive to Dark Souls: Remastered either, but it doesn’t make it any less of an annoyance. Other than that, there isn’t much else going wrong.

It’s another edition of the same old thing. One that has nothing to offer apart from what should be offered in the least – and still doesn’t accomplish it well enough to be worthy of any praise. [13/2018, p.76]

The switch really made this game feel a lot more. intimate and personal through it's handheld capabilities. The game ran smoothly most of the time, and framerate drops were hardly noticable. A very underrated way to play the game. Not as graphically capable as the ps4, but looks good nonetheless. Expand

This is aI preordered this game and was incredibly excited to play it. It got delayed, but I was willing to wait to play it on switch. This is a fantastic game but the Switch version has 2 small drawbacks:

    1. The compressed audio in the first area (Undead asylum) is pretty bad. After this first area though it isn't a problem.

    2. The 'A' and 'B' buttons are the other way round and cannot be changed in the control options. This is very confusing and after hours of game play it still feels uncomfortable as 'A' is universally select and 'B' is back.

Apart from these 2 small drawbacks on the Switch version you're in for one hell of a game. The world of Londor is mysterious and interconnecting like no other. Mechanically the game has age pretty well but still feels clunkier than Dark Souls 3. The lack of direction that game gives you is part of what makes exploring and discovering paths and secrets one of the most rewarding experiences an RPG can offer. Finally, this game is quite difficult and may turn away a few people, but as with all Dark Souls games (and trust me on this one) if you persist and get better section by section this game is going to be topping a few peoples lists.

So glad to finally experience this masterpiece and even more so to do it on a Nintendo console!

Being able to play it on a mobile device is great. And from a purely technical standpoint, this port is good : it takes the 360/PS3 version, increases the resolution and cleans up the original textures. The game runs at a rather steady 30fps, albeit with the typical framepacing issue found in all FromSoft games running at 30fps. Now, why 7? This game alone obviously deserves much more. But this port has two glaring issues that somehow were NEVER patched by Bandai Namco and Virtuos. The first one is the sound, which sounds definitely worst than it did in the original releases. Swing your weapon, and it will sound like someone is opening a bag of chips in a remote corner of Narnia. Launch a chorus-charged piece of music, and it'll sound like an army of mosquitoes is coming at you. Yes, it's THAT bad, and they have no excuse not to have made high quality sound available as a patch or download.

The second issue is button mapping. Somehow Virtuos decided to stick to the Western button mapping of the game, instead of the Japanese one. It could be nothing, except ALL other games on the Switch are mapped following Japanese custom, and so is the controller. Here, you'll press A to cancel, B to confirm. In other words: prepare to cancel A LOT. A lot a lot. And it can make a huge difference in a notoriously difficult game in which menus don't pause the game. The Switch now allows custom mapping of the button but it's a hassle, and worst offense: the option to switch those two buttons is shown in the parameters of the game... But greyed out!!!

Feels, overall, like a half-baked port that could have been nearly perfect with just a little post-release support from Bandai Namco and Virtuos. Both this masterpiece and the Switch deserved better but well, for Switch-only owners or those who appreciate portability, it still does the job.

ITThey took the greatest game of all time, changed almost nothing, rereleased it and slapped "remastered" on it. THIS GAME IS NOT A REMASTER. IT IS LITERALLY ALMOST IDENTICAL TO THE ORIGINAL GAME. F*** whoever was responsible for this. You could have made an actual remaster which this game sorely needs, but instead you just ruined our chances of ever getting a proper remaster. F*** you.
