It’s a standard ”enhanced port” from Wii U to Switch with minimal changes, but those who missed it the first time around will enjoy this tropical romp.

If you can get around the obscene difficulty of having to survive brutally challenging, checkpoint-lite platforming gauntlets, creative level design still makes it worth confronting Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze‘s frustrations.

A highly competent 2D platformer, but one so utterly devoid of any new ideas it’s really only for the nostalgic and those desperate to play something new(-ish) on the Switch.

Tropical Freeze isn't perfect by any means, but having run through it a second time, I feel like it's aged well in the last four years. The challenge can be soul-crushing, but it's satisfying to finally make it across that one jump or beat that one boss. There are enough tools available to make the journey a little bit easier this time around, but not so much to completely diminish the challenge outright.

Considering all the amazing Wii U games still yet to come to the Nintendo Switch, I could have happily seen Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze moved much further back in the queue. It’s simply an average 2D platformer that doesn’t deliver the level of fun or excitement you’d expect from a Nintendo-exclusive title – particularly one featuring some of the company’s most iconic mascots.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a platformer that needs to be experienced by as many people as possible.

Retro Studios displays mastery of the 2D platformer in this exquisite sequel. [Recommended]

If Tropical Freeze passed you by when it was on Wii U and you fancy yourself a bit of a platformer fan, then it’s an absolute no-brainer: it’s a gorgeous game packed with inventive levels and should present you with a serious challenge (even on Funky Mode). If this game is new to you, I can’t recommend it enough. If, on the other hand, you already bought and played through the Wii U game then it really comes down to how eager you are to play it again.

The important thing is that the core game behind this port is brilliant, mind. It’s difficult to actually add much new content to a game like Tropical Freeze because the original version of it is so close to perfect – so instead you end up with the same fabulously choreographed levels and challenges recreated on a new, better platform. While punishing, it largely steers clear of frustration, a perfectly-pitched mix of challenge and reward.

Rewarding, challenging, amazing. And for the love of christ TURN off the Funky Kong mode and play it the way it's meant to be played. Dont underestimate your 7 year old. They are better than you think and will get great playing the real deal, not a mode with training wheels.

It is truly a magical and creative journey full of clever ideas and brilliant design. Each level is different from another, always and continuously pumping out new themes and ideas that function well with the players control. As well as this, the levels are accompanied by delightful visuals and killer music. Difficulty range is no longer an issue, as less experienced players can have fun playing the more forgiven funky mode. Those who want that hardcore challenge still can play on normal and hard difficulties, and boy does it get hard. The boss fights are a personal highlight, with each boss having their own unique energy and charming characteristics as well as brilliant move design. Simple put, even if you had this on Wii U, its worth buying again. It is truly a masterful 2d platforming experience that in my opinion even puts Mario's 2d games to shame... but only just. 10/10 Full Review »
