Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is now better with more features added to it. Still classic gameplay ripped straight from its original Wii U version without any harm built into it. Still a good game to play even if it's been four years for its original Wii U release.

Obra maestra absoluta. Continuista con la saga pero aquí no se valora la originalidad, sino la maestría del diseño de niveles y la jugabilidad. Dejarlo pasar es perderse un cacho de la historia de este medio. Imprescindible.

This game could've easily been a 10, hadn't the developers taken 'frustration' for 'challenge'. Even with the help of special items, expect to die a lot. I mean, a LOT. This game will test your patience more than your platforming skills, especially If you want to beat it 100% like I did. Take a deep breath, and keep the ball rolling.
Wish I could give it a 10, the game IS amazing, but the difficulty at times reflects on your gaming experience and make it less fun. So, I'm rating it 8 for the stunnig graphics, amazing soundtrack, beautiful and immersive level designs, and beloved characters.

As with the other games in the series, it is a 2D platformer whose central movement “gimmick” is the ability to roll along the ground or off ledges and do an air jump. This creates a burst of speed and momentum which can propel you along.

The other central gimmick of this game is having a secondary character ride along on your back. These characters are released from barrels in levels, and in addition to giving you two extra hit points (on top of your normal two), they give you the ability to float in midair (Diddy Kong), do a floaty double jump (Dixie Kong), or pogo bounce super high and avoid getting harmed by spikes if you time your jumps correctly (Cranky Kong). This sounds really neat, but unfortunately, 95% of the time you want Dixie Kong and the other 5% of the time you need Cranky’s ability to pogo jump and dodge getting hit by spikes instead, with Diddy’s ability being almost totally worthless. As a result, this mechanic, as cool as it sounded at first, is pretty underdeveloped. Each of them also has an underwater “propulsion” ability, but again, Dixie Kong’s is not only the most useful, it’s the only one that is necessary to reach certain secrets.

Like previous DKC games, the game consists of a series of middling difficulty 2D platforming levels, each of which has its own particular gimmick. This can be anything from going through a fruit factory and jumping off of sliced fruit to navigating through an underwater maze to jumping off of a bunch of cloud-covered platforms that propel themselves through the air and fade as you ride on them, forcing you to move swiftly to avoid falling into a bottomless pit. Indeed, the game is rather fond of bottomless pits in general, particularly in the more difficult stages, where you must jump from platform to platform or enemy to enemy, often with a time limit due to the platforms starting to fall apart after touching them.

Interspersed with these levels are “vehicle” levels, which really consist of three kinds of levels:

    • Mine cart levels, where you ride in a mine cart and jump over obstacles while moving forward along rails at a constant speed.
    • Rocket levels, where you ride along on a rocket that can be navigated up and down, but which progresses laterally at a constant rate of speed, forcing you to dodge obstacles as you go
    • Rambi the Rhino levels, where you ride on the back of Rambi the Rhino, who can crash through obstacles, walls, and enemies with ease, resulting in lots of environmental destruction and speed as he charges around horn-first.

Unfortunately, while the game does have a reasonable amount of variety, and the game has a lot of visual spectacle, it doesn’t really quite feel like it is as good as DKC 2 or DKC 3, which is a bit of a let-down.

The most obvious way that this was the case was the lack of variety in the “bonus rooms”. In this game, there’s puzzle pieces and KONG letters, both of which serve as collectibles in each level. Some of the puzzle pieces are acquired via going into secret bonus rooms, either hidden barrels or entrances in the wall or whatever, which takes you to a separate mini-stage. In DKC 2 and DKC 3, these were all unique little mini stages, each appropriate to the level. However, in this game, the bonus stages are all the same – there’s about six or so room layouts, and they’re repeated throughout the game. They’re all pretty easy, and none of them are creative in any way. This is quite the letdown, and makes them a lot less interesting than they were in the original games.

But the other issue is more subtle – the levels just don’t feel quite as high quality as the original games’ levels did at times. This game is much more visually impressive, and some of the levels have rather cute gimmicks to them, exploiting the background and doing more in the department of visual spectacle. And yet, the levels still feel slightly lacking, a bit rote. There's just a bunch of niggling little flaws that all add up to make the experience less than amazing.

Overall, this is a pretty solid platformer. It was fun enough to play through, and while the game wasn’t overly long, probably clocking in around 20ish hours to grab all the collectibles, it wasn’t overly short, either. But it just doesn’t have that extra level of quality to put it over the top in the way that DKC2 did. In the end, I’m left feeling content but ambivalent about the game.

As pros, this game has impressive art and good animations. Boss fights are it top notch. And, of course, in nice to play with Donkey Kong as our heart hero from the old days.

However, it is clearly obvious that this game was developed by a team that didn't understand the essence of prior games of the series. Game mechanics are not well designed, sometimes it's difficult because it required skill development, just because it's has clumsy controls and you have to try and try to achieve advance. Game design experience doesn't really dare you to explore the world, this was one the most important thing of prior installments. Music is only a remix, no matter that Davis Wise is still in the project. Additionally, bonus games are repetitive and uninspiring. And finally, main characters as Diddy & Dixies were relegated as mere Donkey's accessories, not to mention that they completely erase secondary characters and only keep Rinho, with this the game lost a complete set of alternative game mechanics.

It's not a terrible game, indeed it could be enjoyable. However, really far away to be a need to be played or a must-have.

The main new feature added in this version is Funky Mode, which, alongside other helpful things, allows you to play as Funky Kong, who can roll infinitely, double jump, stand on spikes without taking damage, and slow his falls. This does make the fairly difficult game a bit easier, but it doesn't completely eliminate the challenge, retaining its fun factor. Otherwise, you can opt for the classic mode to play the game like on Wii U. Whether buying this game if you have it on Wii U is worth it comes to personal preference, I think. Aside from Funky Mode, there's not much different stuff here.

However, if you skipped the game on Wii U, you should absolutely get it on Switch. It may be a little short for some, but Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a creative platformer with just the right amount of difficulty, and the 1080p resolution really makes the game's vibrant colours pop.

During the first hour I was high on nostalgia. The memories of playing DKC2 and 3 as a kid came back to me and I liked the feeling. After that initial rush however, I started to notice some serious issues and as of right now, I am in world three and struggling to pick it back up and continue where I left off.

Firstly, the controls feel so unresponsive. I never seem to time a jump right and DK moves so sluggish. It also doesn't help, that the y button has two actions attributed to it. A roll and slamming the floor. This often results in rolling of a platform when you just wanted to slam a box.

Secondly, the level design is poor. It is just based on trial and error. When I was not dying rolling off platforms or untimely jumps, I died because said platforms suddenly collapsed right under me without any warning. The levels I played looked great, but they did not play great. In past games of the franchise, that was a totally different story.

Overall, I am quite disappointed with the game. Great visuals and nostalgia are nice and all, but it goes to show that a tight control scheme is vital for a platforming game to succeed. Combine the unresponsive controls with bad level design and here's a game from a beloved franchise I don't know if I will want to finish.

Tropical Freeze may be the best 2D platform game ever made. It's definitely the best 2D platformer since the 16-bit era. It's better than all of the New Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Country, and Little Big Planet games. And those are generally considered among the best. I'd even rank it above the recent Sonic Mania. Though it's debatable as to whether it surpasses Super Mario World.

The level design is brilliant and running in 1080p/60fps(with zero frame rate drops), the game is gorgeous. The jump from 720p to 1080p makes it look like a modern game instead of a Wii U game. Kirby would be better looking, but it's ruined by the 868p/30fps. One odd thing is that it doesn't run in 720p in portable mode. Breath of the Wild ran in 900p in docked mode and still managed 720p in portable mode. So docked mode is definitely the better way to play it. Nonetheless, it does look good in docked mode. I haven't touched on the bosses yet, the boss battles are very long with lots of stages. Frankly, this game has some of the most well designed boss battles I've seen.

The game adds Funky Kong mode. Funky Kong is basically an overpowered character, with a unique moveset that allows him to zoom through levels and do crazy stunts. This actually makes him really fun to play. I did play with Funky Kong first so I would have a reason to replay the game. This is easy mode done properly. Instead of just giving you more HP, they give you a unique character. I'm guessing the significantly higher critic score is because they liked the easier difficulty, seeing as we all know critics suck at playing games. Since Tropical Freeze is already a very tough platformer, Funky Kong mode is still not "easy". It remains tougher than New Super Mario Bros. People who play a lot of platform games or like difficult games will definitely want to skip Funky Kong mode, though. Also, the increased HP of Funky Kong makes boss battles too easy. You can Switch to Donkey Kong during Funky Kong mode, but you'll have 3 HP with Donkey Kong, and 6 HP with one of his 3 allies.

Tropical Freeze may not be worth getting if you played the Wii U version. But seeing as less than 2 million people got the Wii U version, and the Switch has sold over 18 million units, there are at least 16 million Switch owners who have not played this game. Get this game if you haven't played it before. Even if you don't like hard platform games, the addition of Funky Kong mode provides a some challenge without getting frustrating.

Rather than a natural progression in difficulty like the original SNES games, this one just laces it in at seemingly arbitrary times, that can only be realized when you are in front of the controls and realize that it's not skill based, but trial by error. They give you balloons for "lives" but when they run out, the game just gives you more - or lets you skip levels - because they seem to unofficially recognize the games lack of cohesiveness in the gameplay. The other big gripe I would say, is the art direction is really uninspired compared to the original. The Kremlings are gone, and so is graphically any of the original artistic direction in the level styling. It's like Disney took over the franchise and ripped out the soul of the game. Not worth the 59.99 at all. Nintendo, this was a piss poor job for the greatness of the Donkey Kong franchise. Every time I pick up this game to retry, I end up wanting to throw it against the wall in frustration. Expand

You know, "Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze" was another game I didn't give enough love to when it was first released on the Wii U. With the recent Switch release, I definitely wanted to give it another chance and see if it was as good as the reviews made it out to be. And, sure enough, the game is excellent!
"Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze" is an incredible 2.5D platformer. Great challenge, excellent platforming sections, plenty of gameplay variety, gorgeous visuals, the list goes on and on. The game really does have everything going for it, and while there's been much discussion on the game's difficulty, I can appreciate a game like this, where the difficulty doesn't feel like "fake difficulty." This isn't a case where the difficulty of the game is curved because of unfair/broken game design, it's a game that actually provides a very real, honest-to-God challenge, and it's all the better for it. The Switch version's added "Funky Mode" also helps ease that just a little bit, without taking too much away from it.
The big question turns to this, of course: seeing as this is a port for the Switch, is it worth grabbing if you already own it for the Wii U? Well, I have the Wii U and Switch versions and I don't regret grabbing this one, but it depends on whether "Funky Mode" actually sounds enticing to you. If you own the Wii U version and want to experience it again (without getting your ass whooped quite as hard), this comes highly recommended. If you own the Wii U version and don't care for a slightly easier experience, stick with that one. If you haven't played the game at all...well, do yourself a favor! "Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze" is an excellent platformer and you won't regret spending your time with it!
Final rating: 10 out of 10 "Fantastic"

If you loved DK on the SNES you'll love this game. It's pretty short though and pretty easy. The controls are kind of whacky which will result in you rolling to your death when you'd rather ground pound and vice versa. The final boss is an absolute travesty though, way too repetitive and easy. I wish funky mode was something other than just super easy mode.

When the Switch version was announced and that there was a new mode called Funky Mode, I decided that I would just wait for the Switch version. Jump forward a few months and here we are, I have finally played DKC Tropical Freeze.

The game is shockingly difficult, I know people look back at the original trilogy and say those games were equally punishing but this feels like another level. The sad part is, I played the games Funky mode which is basically easy mode and I still struggled with it. Especially during some of the bosses where I just banged my head against the wall over and over again. I probably spent 3 or 4 hours just trying to beat the final boss.

My one major complaint with the game is I didn’t love the control scheme, I had a hard time holding down a button to cling to vines. I prefer the old method where you just jump towards a vine and you automatically cling to it. Holding the right shoulder button when I was swinging on vines just felt bad. I had to eventually change the control scheme where the “Y” button was the interact button. I have a habit of always holding down the “Y” button anyway because that’s traditionally the run button. It sucked because then the run button was the right shoulder button so I never ran but it was an overall better experience after I switched the control scheme.

All in all, Tropical Freeze is a solid platformer with great music.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I completed this game some months ago, but I still know that I had a blast playing it. I wasn’t sure if I would get it, when it was announced, since I already have the Wii U version, but I somehow still wanted to experience this great 2D-platformer on the switch.

Every level in this game is unique by adding new mechanics or being specifically themed. So you won’t get bored that easily. You have to consider, that this game is pretty difficult, especially if you try to collect all the K-O-N-G-letters and the puzzle pieces. If you collect every K-O-N-G-letters of a world you get access to an extra level, which is more difficult than the other levels, which can get quite frustrating, but completing those levels feels so satisfying, that you just want to try over and over again until you finally beat it. For a 2D-platformer the graphics are also pretty good, but the most memorable thing is the stunning soundtrack. Almost every piece of music in this game is a masterpiece. It’s also really cool that you can now also play with Dixie Kong or Cranky Kong. Their unique abilities make the gameplay more interesting and more diverse.

If you like 2D-platformers or difficult game in general you should definitely give this game a try. In my opinion, this game is one of the best games of its genre up to this date.

First and foremost many levels seem to be almost identical to each other and somehow lack identity, I know that this is something subjective but I find that the levels and worlds are kind of generic and not a product of real inspiration like in the classic masterpiece Donkey Kong Country 2. Graphics are very good and although music is ok it sadly also has this generic touch in most of the themes...The second thing I noticed is the sheer difficulty of the game. Although it was cool at times to finish a difficult level I quickly found out that the fun factor had been lost during the process of memorizing the patterns and playing the same sections of a level over and over.....Don't get me wrong this is a good game but some sections are so insidiously designed and the game is so unforgiving that in the end once you finish the level all you want to do is stop playing because you are already fatigued and annoyed from trying. Donkey feels heavy to control, is not so responsive and his companions play unfortunately a rather passive role adding only 2 extra lives and a special ability in complete contrast to the old DKC games where every companion played a very active and important role to the experience. Overall an ok game if you like trial and error but nothing special.... Expand

I've only played up until world 3 and both bossfights I had were really challenging (but not frustrating at all) If I have to nitpick I would say that I would've loved a sprint button since the originals on SNES had them if I'm not mistaken. Sometimes I try to make a jump but because DK feels so heavy to control if you don't roll before a jump or walk a little bit before your jump, you'll fall straight to your death.
All in all a beautiful game that captures the classic games to a T

By far one of the most beautiful and challenging games I have ever played. Donkey Kong really knocks it out of the part with this release. I will be playing this game for many many hours to come. Bring it on!

Fast, frenetic, infuriatingly challenging and a joy to play. Donkey Kong was the first game I played on the SNES and retro have captured the magic I remember from so long ago exquisitely. The music plays all the classic tropes from previous DK games with some new additions and the sound design is awesome.

10 out of 10 might seem excessive but I still keep returning to this game trying to beat the near impossible hard mode.

For a bit more of that sweet Nintendo magic, look no further.

If you enjoy the thrill of Kongquest – er, conquest – over a worthy challenge, this game should satisfy. [Issue #34 – July/August 2018, p. 74]

Retro’s creativity is infinite and I simply cannot imagine any platforming fan overlooking this gem. [07/2018, p.77]

If you missed out on the Wii U version, fetch your wallet. But if you’ve played the original, re-investing is simply optional and you won’t miss out on anything new.
