Every time the player solves from two to three puzzles, the story goes forward and new mechanics are introduced. There is little to fault in Evan's Remains, which can be a three-hour long adventure, depending how fast puzzles are solved, and how long is spent enjoying watching the protagonists hair and clothes move about when she runs and jumps. Multiple saves would be a plus point, although they aren't really needed, since puzzles can be bypassed if they prove too difficult. Learning the truth about everyone on and off the island makes a replay enticing, in order to see the hints about their identities, and the emotional, tugging truth about Evan.

Evan’s Remains is a beautiful game that blends puzzle and visual novel elements together to tell a gripping narrative. However, some dark themes emerge from this with a few convenient “ah-ha” moments that don’t really match up with what is revealed to the player. Still, the journey is one that is most difficult to put down as you find yourself anxious to uncover everything it has to offer.

The mystery at the core of this tale is an emotional and intriguing rollercoaster that will have you guessing right up until the very end. Even with such fantastical ideas and unending twists, the game still remains grounded and coherent all the way through.

Evan’s Remains tells a story about life and death that doesn’t quite hit the mark. The monolith puzzles are enjoyable, but the narrative surrounding them doesn’t serve as a worthwhile reward for their completion. If you’re looking for a light puzzle-platformer with mostly attractive pixel art, Evan’s Remains might be worth considering. If you want a more thrilling or satisfying narrative experience, keep searching.

Evan’s Remains is a “mystery-thriller” that, while pretty big on mystery, is shorter on thrills. If the story (and the way it’s set-up) connects with you, you’ll have much more enjoyment than I did. However, I don’t think this is a tale with a broad audience in mind. Joined by puzzles that look and play quite similarly, the impact lessens. But the great audio/visual package elevates this one to an okay experience for me.

Evan's Remains is cut from the same cloth as games like Celeste and To the Moon, though it doesn't quite reach the heights of either of them. The game falls into the category of "short/cheap indie title that can be fun for an afternoon," but we can't help but feel that it had the potential to be so much more.

Evan's Remains is a moderately fun puzzle game that is ruined by an overbearing and dull narrative that destroys any sense of pacing.

The puzzles are good and fun and when it starts to get monotonous the game is over, so they are just in the perfect amount. The most surprising thing in this game it's the history, what an amazing and dark history. I definitely recommend this game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wish I could give this game a better score, I have massive respect for any indipendant developer who's able to put out a finished product, especially one that's as polished and fun to play as evans remains. But the story in the game really sours my opinion of it. The build up is fine if not a little confusing but where the game really lost me was in the final plot twist. In my honest opinion I think it was executed very poorly. SPOILERS

Essencially the ending of the game boils down to the main character being revealed to be a payed actor hired by some mega corporation to pretend to be this guy called Clovers sister so that he can die happy thinking that they were both going to be ok. They both have a mysterious illness that's slowly killing both him and his actual sister and he came to the island the game is based on as a last ditch effort for both of them to survive.

I'm struggling to put into words how burned this story made me feel. I think the game wanted to protray the people in the mega corporation as morally grey and just trying to do a nice thing for a stranger but to me it comes off as them being increadibly ignorant and callus. There's no greyness to be seen here. We've got an actor who is willing to emotionally manipulate someone like this for money, a guy who was helped out a lot by clover taking him in who gave him false hope and lied to him for a big scheme and a murderer who's criminally delusional. If the game protrayed these people as the villains in anyway I think that could of saved it, but that isn't how it came off to me. For me it came off as the game protraying them as a bunch of good people willing to do questionable things for someone to make them happy, which really doesn't fit their behavior.

Finally if the creator of this game is reading this, please continue making games. I think you are genuenlly very talented and I am very much looking forward to seeing what you're planning to make in the future. You're music, art and gameplay skills are phenomenal and the only thing that brought this game down was the writing. If you improve on that I assure you that you will make some amazing games.

Unfortunately, the game is brought down by inept storytelling and a plot that starts off somewhere just above mediocre and only loses promise after each twist. The game seems opposed to the idea of allowing a simple story or a happy ending, which is fine, but their efforts to make something more complex fail and lead to an end product that is unsatisfying for no purpose. There are relatively tame 'dark' elements in the story which are not handled well and have little payoff. Would not play again. Expand
