Evergate is a wonderfully designed puzzle-platformer that starts off strong and goes from strength to strength over the course of its campaign. Every new world you encounter here adds a new twist to proceedings, gradually becoming more complex as it layers mechanics on top of one each other, enabling you to experiment and come up with your own unique ways to bound across its intricate levels. Speed-running here, for us, feels like it was tacked on for no real reason but, besides this one little misstep, this really is an essential purchase for puzzle/platforming fans and a standout example of its genre on Switch.

Evergate is a precision puzzle platformer which looks beautiful and sounds fantastic. Although the controls take some getting used to, the intricately designed levels provide a wealth of challenge, and the power-up system offers many different ways to play.

For a game about delving into memories, Evergate isn't particularly memorable. Its style and gameplay are very evocative of other more noteworthy platformers. But that doesn't mean this is terrible. It constantly introduces new mechanics that increase the challenge with an eccentric take on the afterlife and reincarnation. It won't be mentioned in the same breath as popular indie platforming titles like Celeste or Super Meat Boy, but if you're a fan of puzzle platforming games in general then Evergate should make for a grand old time.

Using the Soulflame to conquer Ki's challenges gives Evergate a twist on the usual style of puzzle platformers. The innocence of Ki makes it easy to want to protect her, to help Ki figure out exactly what is going on, and why she can see memories that aren't her own. The difficulty level may prove too much of a challenge for the more casual platform fan but will provide hours of entertainment for those who seek out challenges and want to unlock every achievement in this intriguing title. Even if the end isn't reached, the highly detailed levels and clever game mechanics make any time spent in Evergate worthwhile.

Even though its premise has a lot of promise, Evergate's reliance on trial and error makes the experience feel more frustrating than fun.

Evergate has the potential to be an incredible game to play, with its beautiful artwork and animation, and intelligent and well-planned gameplay. Unfortunately, every level feels like a struggle, needing pinpoint precision to complete and move on to the next. It ends up a frustrating experience more than an enjoyable challenge.

On top of this foundation is a unique puzzle mechanic in the form of memory crystals that the protagonist Ki must shoot with her soulflame to unleash their powers. Crystals must be used with wit and precision to reach the gate at the end of each level, and to unlock playstyle-boosting artifacts via optional achievements.

A charming and affecting story about second chances enhanced by a magnificent fully orchestral soundtrack round out this impressive first release from four-person indie outfit Stone Lantern Games.

A beautiful game with amazing artwork, breathtaking music and a heartwarming story. The core mechanic of the game, the Soulflame, is very easy to use, yet difficult to master, allowing those who wish to play through the game for the story to do so with ease, while also allowing challenge for those who seek it. There's always more than one way of beating a level, and it's fun to figure out creative ways of traversing each level to beat it in ways that weren't intended. All in all, an outstanding game, and in my opinion, a must buy! Expand

You shoot the Soulflame from your character through a crystal and onto a white surface to break and activate the power of that crystal. There's many different crystals allowing for interesting puzzles. And while the game is more puzzle-focused than most other platformers, the crystals combined with the Instant Fire feature offer fast-paced movement options which make the platforming itself super fun. I've played the game for 200+ hours and still find myself enjoying the gameplay. If you're interested in trying out a new puzzle-platformer with a good replay value, I'd highly recommend this game. So I wasI discovered Evergate a while back and was immediately drawn in by its design, the game had this soft uplifting feel about it. So I was surprised when the game showed up in the “Blink and you’ll miss it” sizzle reel during Nintendo’s Indie World. The game is releasing on Switch first before arriving on PC and other platforms sometime later.

The game surrounds Ki, a tiny little spirit arriving back in the afterlife, but just before they are sent back to Earth for reincarnation, dark spirits invade the afterlife, corrupt the Evergate and send Ki into somebody’s memories. You utilise the Soulflane, a beam of light that Ki can bounce off objects to help her traverse the levels.

The game starts off simply enough with gems that help her bound higher, but fairly soon you get all kinds of new trinkets, ones that burn, ones that build platforms and ones that transport you. The game doesn’t offer much in the way of introductions or tutorials so you are left up to your own devices to figure things out.

Accompanying Evergate’s Ori-inspired design is a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack which gives the memories seen throughout the levels that little extra flair. The memories have you travel to several different eras and locations like the ancient Chinese city to the mountains of Alaska, basically what I am trying to say is that they’ve got presentation down.

I can’t say the same for the actual gameplay though, the main crux of the game has Ki jumping over platforms to reach the goal and they need to use the Soulflame reflect it against reflective surfaces while also lined up with a specific trinket. The game will go into slow-mo so you can line up your shot but soon enough levels get extremely complicated with reflective surfaces that break after one use so be prepared for trial and error, A LOT of trial and error and restarting levels as the game throws new mechanic after new mechanic into the fray like killer crows and rotating platforms. While it can be satisfying when you finally figure out a puzzle that’s been irking you for 20 minutes, having to constantly repeat a level because your aiming was slightly off or you missed that jump by “that” much can make you wonder why you are even continuing on.

But for those who like a real challenge with their platformers like Super Meat Boy or the B-Sides in Celeste, Evergate will certainly satisfy that itch. Completionists will have an absolute crazy time getting each levels trinkets, but it really is a hauntingly beautiful game that I just couldn’t get into myself.
