Everhood has a similar story to many you’ll hear – a passion project, brought to fruition after years of hard work. Its inspiration in Undertale is clear, but this never holds it back from standing on its own merits. What a visually intense, aurally stunning, philosophically charged experience – and possibly one of the best games of the year.
This isn’t exactly a rhythm game. While its descriptor may not be accurate, it’s still a marvellous game. Already a cult hit with fans of Undertale and other games of the sort, Everhood is a bizarre and groovy adventure that can’t be missed.
Amazingly wonderful short game with a VERY fun twist. The whole experience is just good vibes and fun music; Don't go in expecting the best story or gameplay you've ever seen, but something unique and solid unlike anything you've ever played before.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I took Everhood for review. Now that I've beaten the game once and touched upon New Game+, all I can say is this is my favorite 2021 indie so far. And I strongly think it will take something incredible to dethrone it from that position. Not only does it feature amazing music, but it also has evocative artwork and a compelling plot about mortality and human choice. If it helps, don't think of this as an indie. Think of it as required gaming for anyone that enjoys video games.
During its six-hour runtime, not counting the New Game Plus mode that gives access to extra battles, secrets, and endings, Everhood manages to not only distinguish itself from its influences, but also to turn the expectations that come with them upside-down, all to provide an experience that can’t be found anywhere else. Whether or not the game will achieve a cult status remains to be seen, but players itching for something out of the ordinary better not let Everhood slip under their radar.
Near the beginning of Red’s adventure, Everhood asks the player if they wish to know the “absolute truth,” which could aid them in their journey, but also hinder their understanding of reality. The player is asked again at the game’s conclusion. I said no both times, but I think Everhood’s message is there are no absolute truths. It’s up to the player to decide what is right, wrong, and what their purpose is, and in doing so, Everhood provides a one-of-a-kind experience.
Everhood is an enchanting rhythm-based adventure that falls short of greatness due to a few technical issues. Its combat system is an absolute joy and the music is brilliant, however, frame-rate drops and lengthy load times hinder what could have been a great experience.
I enjoyed playing Everhood and the music was extremely enjoyable, but before we could apply for the marriage certificate, I realized how loudly it breathes when it sleeps and now I just want to suffocate it. I’m still giving it a recommendation, because not everyone is going to share my grievances with the narrative and the technical issues can be ironed out. There’s some definite high points here, but I don’t think it’s going to achieve immortality.
I'l I love this game obviously its not perfect but thats fine no game is perfect. The music is amazing and the combat too. in the first half where you don't have your arm weaving and dodging the attacks makes you fell really cool. After that when you have your arm fighting everything again but you have to defeat them before the song ends puts some more challenge to the game. The overworld is nothing to write home about other than running is kinda annoying because you have to double tap the control stick twice to run which is inconvenient but isnt game ruining. The story is very abstract which is a good thing and doing the 180 of needing to kill all the characters you got attached to is really good. At the end of the game the ending gives me a goofy smile on my face every time. Also when i have too kill blue i tear up every time. At times the game is kinda unfair in its difficulty which I don't mind because you can change the difficulty when you die. In the end game is an emotional rpg music game which has a couple rough edges.
I think it’s a fun game but wouldn’t necessarily rave about it. I played it on normal mode and I think I could have switched it to hard as I was winning all battles besides the final one on the first try so normal mode is quite relaxed, but was just playing for the vibes. Sequel looks like it’s gonna be a lot nicer so will definitely be playing!
Everhood has a lot of cool ideas and fantastic gameplay.
Sadly, the game seems to do a lot of talking about how great it is. There's a mushroom that gives a super cool trippy fight, but he leads up to it with "get ready, this fight is gonna blow your mind." They tell you cool philosophical ideas, but it's presented as "Absolute Truth".
If you're able to get past how pretentious the game is, you'll have a great time.
This game is amazing... but the switch version needs a patch. Near the middle of the game, the frame rate drops drastically to the point where it is not playable. The game needs pixel perfect precise controls and the switch version does not deliver...
Summary An UNCONVENTIONAL ADVENTURE RPG that takes place in an inexpressible world filled with amusing musical battles and strange delightful encounters. To put it simply: You are in for a ride.
