Everhood has a similar story to many you’ll hear – a passion project, brought to fruition after years of hard work. Its inspiration in Undertale is clear, but this never holds it back from standing on its own merits. What a visually intense, aurally stunning, philosophically charged experience – and possibly one of the best games of the year.

Even though the message of Everhood may not entirely land, the aural, visual, and gameplay experience, as a whole, is among the best on Switch. The rhythm combat is nothing short of perfection, and that it can be made more accessible by changing the difficulty at any time is sublime.

This isn’t exactly a rhythm game. While its descriptor may not be accurate, it’s still a marvellous game. Already a cult hit with fans of Undertale and other games of the sort, Everhood is a bizarre and groovy adventure that can’t be missed.

During its six-hour runtime, not counting the New Game Plus mode that gives access to extra battles, secrets, and endings, Everhood manages to not only distinguish itself from its influences, but also to turn the expectations that come with them upside-down, all to provide an experience that can’t be found anywhere else. Whether or not the game will achieve a cult status remains to be seen, but players itching for something out of the ordinary better not let Everhood slip under their radar.

Near the beginning of Red’s adventure, Everhood asks the player if they wish to know the “absolute truth,” which could aid them in their journey, but also hinder their understanding of reality. The player is asked again at the game’s conclusion. I said no both times, but I think Everhood’s message is there are no absolute truths. It’s up to the player to decide what is right, wrong, and what their purpose is, and in doing so, Everhood provides a one-of-a-kind experience.

I enjoyed playing Everhood and the music was extremely enjoyable, but before we could apply for the marriage certificate, I realized how loudly it breathes when it sleeps and now I just want to suffocate it. I’m still giving it a recommendation, because not everyone is going to share my grievances with the narrative and the technical issues can be ironed out. There’s some definite high points here, but I don’t think it’s going to achieve immortality.

An engaging cast of characters, an amazing soundtrack, and gameplay mechanics I hadn’t seen before which made the game feel fresh and fun to play. Some of the online videos/trailers for the game can look a bit daunting but there are multiple difficulty levels if you’re not as on beat with rhythm/dodging type games. I wouldn’t say I’m particularly gifted with those kind of games however I did mange to complete the game on the recommended Hard difficulty, which I felt have the right balance between it feeling rewarding but challenging. You can change the difficulty at any point also.

I wish there had been some better cohesion with the story telling. Everything made sense in the end (kind of) but the beginning felt a little hap hazard and unless I missed a few cutscenes/character dialogue there are parts of the story I still don’t quite get but it’s enjoyable none the less. I do agree with some review comments that the load times can seem a little too long in places also.

Other than that I thought this was a fantastic game, if you’re looking for an RPG with a fun, unique, interesting and challenging gameplay then give this a try!

Very unique and interesting experience! Everhood is eccentric and downright strange in all the right ways.
First is the aesthetic. Whilst some may be quick to pass it off as an 'Undertale clone' or something of the like, the game does some really interesting things with the perspective and art that provide a stunning visual spectacle at times.
The gameplay is really fun and innovative. I played through the game on Hard difficult, and besides some of the 'secret fights' which were incredibly challenging, the main story experience felt incredibly well balanced, with a steady difficulty curve that never felt unfair or undoable.
The music is certainly one of the game's strongest suits, and I found myself humming numerous songs even after I'd put the game down.
Lastly, the narrative provided many thought-provoking questions, and I found myself really engaging and reflecting on some of the questions asked explicitly or implicitly by the game's story.
I'd recommend this game to anyone who enjoys narrative-driven games, or anyone who enjoys a good videogame soundtrack.

Everhood can largely be split into two acts, and while I'd say both have their merits, I believe it's important to state that the first act is considerably weaker than the second. That's not to say it's bad, but I found that the writing and gameplay was greatly improved once the second act kicked in, and characters and battles I had found uninteresting suddenly had an extra kick. The music in this game is great, and in a strange way allows for Everhood to very much be a rhythm game, while throwing away almost every standard concept for such games. I wouldn't say the game is perfect, but it's a damn good experience that got better for me as it went along. Expand

This is definitely similar to Undertale but I think the one thing this game misses that Undertale possesses, is spending time with individual characters and developing a bond between a character. Sure, you spend time with the characters in this game, but not any individual character and not to a personal extent. I think this deters the attachment to almost all the characters in Everhood which doesn't do justice to this games story. This game was so close but yet so far from being a even better game then Undertale but I personally think it failed to understand what made Undertale a great experience story-wise. Although this is the case, the gameplay makes up for it. So, I will say this game is good and definitely deserves a 8 but it could have been a 9 at least. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Everhood is one of the most disappointing games I've ever played. I was lured in by the great music and the fun-looking gameplay and thought it would be worth checking out, but when I got about halfway through, the game just took a complete nosedive. Normally the gameplay consists of dodging the enemy's projectiles until the enemy just gives up and stops, and that is pretty fun. But then once you retrieve your arm, you gain the ability to fight back, and this is where the problems arise. You are tasked with killing everybody in the game, however the fight will still end once the enemy runs out of attacks, so you have to kill them before that happens. Or in other words, every fight from that point on puts you on a TIME LIMIT. The attacks do not loop, you don't do a final strike at the end, nothing. WOW is that not fun. And is especially doesn't help that your strikes can get blocked by the enemy's attacks, so you have to paradoxically be slow and methodical while also playing fast and frantically. It's a mess.

There are other smaller issues too. You can run in this game by double tapping any direction, however this is really finicky to use because changing directions cancels your run, and so you have to double tap the control stick/pad again to pick up the speed, which becomes really noticeable during sections of the game where you have to move fast through a course. Why they didn't just program in a dedicated run button, I have no idea.
The overworld environments really suck. It's just tiles on a black background, you will be walking around a mostly empty void for the majority of the game, it feels very RPG Maker-esque and lazy. And in the case of the mushroom forest area, it's annoying trying to figure out where you can walk because of how weird the layout is, and navigation is a pain because everything looks the same. It is so hard to get invested in this world because the world looks so uninteresting, I didn't feel like I'm in another realm when I walk through this game, I feel like I'm playing a game that wasn't fully fleshed out.
The loading times in this game are absolutely unforgivable. Almost every instance of exiting a battle, going through a door, initiating a cutscene, etc. will trigger a loading screen, one that doesn't even have a loading screen animation in the corner like most games do, which is odd. But most egregiously, the loading screens will pretty much always last for 10-15 SECONDS. And given how often things have to load, you'll find yourself staring a blank screen for very long amounts of time, which really amps up the tedium and made me very apathetic towards the game for wasting my time. It is so confusing, how could a 2D indie game have longer load times than The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, which was released on the same system four years ago?

All of these factors majorly contribute to how incredibly tedious the game gets in the second half, which consists mostly of annoying combat and obnoxious walking around, plus an ending that doesn't know when to freaking end. What's sad about all this is that... it's there. The combat is there, the characters are there, the themes are there, the music is there, the charm is there, had this game not been so backwards with its combat, load times, run mechanics, and world design, I imagine I would have loved it. But as it stands now, I just cannot appreciate it for what it was going for because it just tripped in the worst ways possible.
