Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams is predominantly a side scrolling platformer fans dream in and of itself, so despite some very shallow shortcomings, it has a lot to offer.
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is a fantastic 2D platformer and this Owltimate Edition is a great excuse to give it a try if you've never played it before. Its unconventional and often creepy stages are a perfect fit for Halloween, too.
I've never seen or experienced such an innovative gameplay mechanic. Which affects the world around, characters and even soundtrack. It's creativity at its peak!
I played Mario Oddysey and it was great for all of its panache but felt it was a bit tedious as a platformer at times and more of a show piece, I actually got a bit fed up with it at some points. Giana Sisters is the opposite, as it doesn't have mass production flair and flamboyance but it is amazingly fun to play. Very tight controls, with good sound and music, nice graphics and a great little game mechanic. I have seen it said that Guacamelee upgraded on this but I remember finding that game very boring to play and couldn't get in to it at all. The mechanic on the gameplay means you swap between sisters regularly but the whole aesthetic, music and atmosphere changes everytime at the click of a button. This game is a lot more fun to play than many titles with much higher reviews. Is it the best game ever made? No. Is it a platforming great? Absolutely. So many games get rated on production and frame rate etc. People never review based on how enjoyable and fun a title is. This is actually pretty damn good production and good fun too. I would say the only platformer's I found as enjoyable as this with a similar feel to play would be the Rayman games.
Giana SIsters: Twisted Dreams is a fantastic platformer that will keep you on your toes, with multiple modes to unlock, hidden gems and artwork plus additional themed levels you've got the best package in the Owltimate Edition.
It might have taken a while for the Giana girls to get back into action, but between this and their DS game, it’s a name in video games that I certainly hope continues to keep churning out wonderful new adventures for all of us to play. Go give Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams — Owltimate Edition a download!
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams brings its mix of gorgeous artwork, fun and competent gameplay, enormous amount of content and customizable soundtrack to create an enjoyable platforming experience that is certain to find its place in the Nintendo Switch. In a series that owes its original fame to an instance of copyright infringement, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams demonstrates that it has made a full transition into maturity and built its own identity.
While the music is a highlight, it doesn’t always match the visuals on screen, and all in all, I find this title a hard one to recommend. If you’re blown away by the art style or the music, give Twisted Dreams a look, but otherwise look for your sweet dreams somewhere else.
Giana Sisters is a solid 2D platformer. I’m quite surprised, I was expecting something like a Kirby game in terms of difficulty but I was very wrong, this game kicked my ass several times. I played on Hard mode which had less checkpoints and extra hit gems. What makes it difficult is that most of the time you die after taking only 1 hit, this can be quite unforgiving. It’s never too frustrating because checkpoints are frequent and you respawn immediately with no load times.
The gameplay is very tight and responsive. The cool mechanic in this game is the ability to manipulate dreams. With the push of a button you can toggle your character between “cute” and “punk” personalities. When you’re in cute mode the world is nightmarish and when you are in punk mode everything is bright and joyful.
You can dash and twirl (glide). When you dash you also simultaneously change into punk mode. If you are already in punk mode then nothing changes. The opposite happens when you twirl. Levels are based on these two moves and are amazingly designed! The developers really knew what they were doing when designing the levels, it was so original! Many ideas I hadn’t seen in any other platformer!
In the later levels, it went really fast. This might come in as a bold statement but I think I would like 2D Sonic games to be like Giana Sisters: Fast but still feels good when things are slow for exploration. Like seriously, punk mode is definitely Sonic and cute mode is Tails.
Finding secrets was always an awesome challenge and I was always actively looking for them. I couldn’t find them all, some are really well hidden.
There was definitely something missing though. I think it was the characters, I didn’t really care for them or the story. Maybe it’s the franchise itself that didn’t appeal to me.
The music was excellent, however I think it was reused a lot, I can only remember a couple of themes used over and over. Good thing they are great tunes though.
Excellent game, such a joy to play. It’s still very cheap to buy to this day on the Switch. I played it on the OLED and it’s such a beautiful game.
9/10
I love the atmosphere of the game, the mechanics and the characters. The levels are a bit long at times and it can get quite hard. Music is not my favorite either, but the overall experience of the game is great! I love it!
It's too hard for the casual gamers like me. I don't know why i have to work hard for every levels instead chill and relax. The graphics is good the music is good too but...
