While its combat design isn't perfect and the enemy AI could be better, Hard West’s supernatural-tinged Wild West shtick offers a great way to get into the XCOM formula without relying on too many random factors. And with the Scars of Freedom expansion pack included as standard, there are plenty of ways to exercise your itchy trigger finger on the go.

I really enjoyed it ... It was fun to play, but really hard on the other side. The biggest flaw is camera work ...

I felt somewhat immersed in the stories and I enjoyed the little details in the text that made this game feel like a unique western experience. The music and art in the game was really nice and helped with the immersion. After playing the game I wanted a bit more but for $1 on the eshop I definitely felt like I got my money's worth.

The game is difficult and the gameplay is interesting. It was very similar to xcom which I am a huge fan of. I liked the luck system but one of my favorite parts of the game was the poker card bonus system and how you could really feel your characters progressing from map to map and how some of the rare items you obtained would be unlocked and purchasable at a later date by different characters in other campaigns.

One issue I had was the camera and targeting doors or other mission objectives. There were times when my character didn't do what I wanted him to do and ended up dying for it. There were also issues with line of sight and sometimes it was hard to get into a position that would let you get the shot just right. I would love some sort of indicator that showed when you went to a certain location which enemies were targetable.

The story of the game was very dark but I enjoyed that kind of story because it's fairly fresh for a tactical type of rpg. The choices you make actually do matter down the road as some things carry over from one campaign to the next and the game encourages replay with all of the branching paths based on choices. The game has multiple endings as well.

I definitely recommend it for those people stuck at home looking for a solid 15-20 hours of content for a low price.

Hard West seemed like a game I would really enjoy but left me disappointed. I think on the PC this may of been a better game.

Hard West seemed like a game I would really enjoy but left me disappointed. I think on the PC this may of been a better game.

    Game(s) like: Wasteland 2, XCom

    Pros:
    - General gameplay with the Luck factor as well done
    - Cool setting and I like the little missions outside the core turn based missions
    - The poker bonus while simple were fun

    Cons:
    - Had trouble knowing if I was flanking, it would look obvious and I'd plan my move around it and then after moving if I wasn't flanking it would kill my turn and possible mission
    - No save points made the above point more frustrating as having to redo 45 mins for something you just couldn't see was bad
    - Hard to see some of the turn based gameplay sometime
    - Clunky interface, especially when setting equipment

I love this kind of games and I have to admit that I was eager to buy the Game for the Switch after reading and watching reviews. I did buy itI love this kind of games and I have to admit that I was eager to buy the Game for the Switch after reading and watching reviews. I did buy it on a massive discount for just $2 instead of some $20 and boy am I glad I did not pay full price.
I think this game has some great Ideas in terms of Story and the idea to add some text adventure style game play but it fails in some other areas.
If you're characters are in a confined space such as a House, it is very hard to actually see where you can move and still have cover. Moving around the camera is often not helpful at all. Either a fully free moving camera or a Zoom would have been awesome.

You certainly could get past the Camera issue if the game would be a bit more fair. You quite often place your character in a position with cover and with a pretty much clean sight to the Enemy (no table, chairs or anything in between, yet you only get a 50% hit chance. Other times your enemy is on the second floor and with you directly beneath and you get a 100% hit chance. Or you decide to rush a room, move in with the enemy right in front of you, you can shoot and you WILL miss... why ?? That does not make ANY sense at all.
Hard West could have been a very good release for the Switch, I like the ideas, the graphic, the theme.... but, in my opinion, the Developer messed it up.
I would have been mad if I payed full price but for $2.... it is essentially just like a spilled Coffee. Even though I really WANT to like the game, I just can't.
If this game is on Sales in your region for under $10 you may want to have a look otherwise stay clear. Hopefully XCOM will fare better on the switch than Hard West.

I can't see how to navigate at all, walls and such are in the way constantly. And the UI is beyond bad. It's a chore to purchase stuff and at one point I thought the game had bugged out since it threw me back at the title screen. Then I realized I had to click Campaign and choose a branch. And just the logical placement of buttons is simply bad. Played a few missions and then deleted it, but really wanted it to be good since I love XCOM and love western. Don't buy this. Expand
