Hypnospace Outlaw is an incredible nostalgia trip into the Internet of the 90s, with great investigative gameplay and emotional moments.

Hypnospace Outlaw really is like nothing else out there; at once an excellent puzzle game, razor-sharp satire and meticulously crafted slice of early-internet nostalgia that you can spend hours absolutely lost in. It's frequently hilarious stuff that's impeccably well-written across the board, managing to successfully bring the crazy, lawless, early rush of creativity that formed the pre-Y2K era of the internet convincingly back to life. It delivers a truly extraordinary recreation of the GeoCities era of the internet that absolutely nails its '90s aesthetic to present a living, breathing world that's a joy to spend time browsing around, soaking up the atmosphere and reliving the anarchic early days of the internet as you slowly untangle the puzzles at the heart of its narrative.

Hypnospace Outlaw is a fascinating experience that I wholeheartedly recommend. It is well-written and authentic, and while the early going may feel like completing chores, it soon tests the player’s detective skills. With cases that are satisfying to solve and a story that also applies to the internet as we know it today, it’s a must-play.

If you enjoy scavenger hunts, have some fond memories of the 1990s or, like me, have a passion for computers and the web, you will enjoy your role as a Hypnospace Enforcer. [Issue #51 – March/April 2021, p. 33]

Should novelty be your preferred flavor, Hypnospace Outlaw will definitely satiate your appetite for lighter eShop fare. It was wonderful to be reminded of my first days going online: downloading music, attending Camp Hyrule, and creating my own webpage. While the enforcement gameplay helps to move the overall story forward, it’s getting lost in the inane minutiae and seeing where your cursor takes you that really make this title one worth considering. If you take it at face value as a simulation, you’ll find a faithful and rewarding experience; a free demo on the eShop should give you an idea of whether you'll enjoy the game. Ultimately, it’s best to take your time with Hypnospace Outlaw rather than rushing through to the end. The devil, as they say, is in the poorly-designed webpage details.

A quite entertaining simulation of an alternative 90’s internet. The great art design aside the numerous beautifully designed websites keep you coming back to solve new cases as an enforcer.

Hypnospace Outlaw delivers a truly unique puzzling experience that’s so easy to lose hours at a time simply browsing the world it’s created. It’s sure to be a smile-inducing nostalgia trip for those familiar with the likes of Geocities but for the rest, there’s a truly wild and funny time to be had here also.

Some of the puzzles get a little tricky later down the line but with an in-built hint system I had no problems with it! All the music is stellar all the way through, despite it all being from genres I'm not sure actually exist! A wonderful experience, well worth your money Expand

Thankfully about a year later the Switch version was announced, and I could finally play a game I had wanted to play for a while. I pre-purchased the game as soon as I could and anxiously awaited the release date. I feel as if I could not have made a better purchase if I tried. Hypnospace Outlaw is such a creative and endearing experience that I cannot praise enough. Being a sort of simulation of an alternate reality operating system is an interesting concept by itself, but with the characters and their personalities, An amazing visual style, fantastic soundtrack, and a simple yet fun style of gameplay all come together to make this game one of my favorite indie games I've ever played. Plus, there's a solid integration of joystick and motion control options that feel natural, if a little odd at first. I will say that one drawback, albeit a small one, is that it does like to slow down every now and then when loading specific pages. Sometimes this makes the music play slower and causes the in-game cursor movement to be a bit a janky, but for the most part, this isn't a problem. If you want an amazing game to chill out with, whether it be at home in bed or out on the road, you definitley can't go wrong with the Switch version of this game. Expand

Long before facebook consumed and consolidated every single websiteThis game is one of the best satirical and nostalgic experiences I've had. Long before facebook consumed and consolidated every single website into what is now known as groups and pages, there existed a plethora of individual craftmanship and websites coded manually in html. If you forgot the URL to someone's site, you'd have to jump on MSN Messenger and ask them for it, then send "thx brb" as you go check it out.

I remember being in highschool and me and a couple of others used to compete to see who could make the best website. I, ofcourse, had the upper hand and sheer brilliance as I embedded a page visit counter at the bottom of my home page lololollll!! I also had a link to my poetry and a cool background. I was indeed l33t. Until they figured out how to replace the normal arrow cursor and give it some crazy weird trail, WITW.

Yes this was real and long forgotten until this game trolled me with my own past ambitions and artistic endeavours. And as laughable and cringey as it is looking back now, I really miss those days. But thank you No More Robots and Tendershoot for giving me one more chance to relive it with a huge smile and countles BWL moments. And did I mention, you play as an enforcer.

Tip: Plug a keyboard and mouse into your Switch. You're welcome.

Many of the nostalgic web pages the game throws at you are interesting and a joy to witness, but their novelty fades fast, and makes the game feel empty when all you have is a mystery that doesn't feel very enjoyable to solve or witness. The game becomes enjoyable in the post game when you can just explore to your heart's content without the need to solve things, but you have to play through the game to get to that point so it's not really worth it.
