An unconventional combination of two worlds and genres, which is funny, reasonably difficult and especially offers a great playability. For the Nintendo Switch owners, it is a must-have, everyone will enjoy this game. [Issue#278]

More than an attempt to cash in on the Super Mario Bros. and Raving Rabbids franchises, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is one of the most creative turn-based tactical games in years.

Nintendo’s Switch has had a steady flow of amazing titles since its March 2017 release, and having Ubisoft buddy up to create a game like this is another feather in the console’s cap. It has all the graphical charm of a Mario platformer, an amazing soundtrack by an industry legend, the backing of two big studios, and the rarest thing of all: hilarious Rabbids. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is simply no joke.

Ubisoft managed to turn a complex genre into a Mario-friendly experience that never insults the intelligence of its players.

We can’t say that Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle has no other issues besides graphics: some people won’t like weird scenery of the Mushroom Kingdom, others will be annoyed by somewhat blunt humor. But there’s no doubt about the bottom line: Switch owners got a good brand-new tactic game. [Issue#223, p.68]

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is not perfect, but most its problems can be ignored because they are relegated to portions of the game you can skip or speed through. The core experience of the game, the battles, are inventive and fun. Though it is still a strategy game, and therefore a niche experience that appeals to a specific type of player, its carefree tone, bright colors, and fast pace make it feel inviting. There’s plenty of nuance to find in Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, so long as you’re willing indulge its playful side.

This rollercoaster ride of a turn-based strategy game starts out almost impossibly strong, but by the end I mostly wished it'd been over three hours earlier.

I've never played a game like this (turn based strategy), but it does a great job of explaining the basics, and leaves figuring out the right strategy up to you. In the beginning it's very easy, but it quickly becomes challenging, requiring multiple takes to figure out the right characters, weapons, and skills required to solve the problem, in addition to the tactics of the actual gameplay. This will definitely be a sleeper hit, but it's a great game and shouldn't be judged based on the presence of Rabbids, which don't add much to the game but don't detract from it either. Expand

I cannot believe that Ubisoft would take Rabbids and Mario and make an XCOM game, and it would be glorious. This is the ultimate example of a game no one thought they wanted, and that now everyone will want. Fabulous tactics, amazing polish, great replayability, and much more depth than you would expect. I love turn-based strategy, and this game is amazing. Expand

It has none of the RNG frustration many of this type have due to the straight forward attack system. It places a heavy emphasis on bold movement, encouraging players to run, dash, move through pipes and team jump all over the map. It generally has a good difficulty progression though I would say that level 1 was kept too easy for too long. Enemy variety is good though it would have been cool to see more mushroom kingdom related characters in the mix.

The story mode is hilarious with a particularly wonderful World 3 boss. The look of the world itself is amazing with Rabbids and Mario art meshing completely. Moving through the worlds between battles is an excellent way to break up battles and the way they divided levels make it feel instantly familiar to any Mario fan.

Controls are alright though the camera can be a bit rigid at times. A minor gripe I had was that you could not keep a cool weapon for too long as they become obsolete fairly quickly. It would have been better if there was the weapon skin system. Annoyingly, because of the emphasis on story, Mario and at least one rabbid (who is beaten up in cutscenes) must be present during single player, meaning the only time you can see a full Mario or full Rabbids team is in multiplayer. Multiplayer disappoints a bit in that there is no online mode and no vs mode. A map editor would have also been awesome.

Overall, this is a great game that fans of Mario or the Rabbids should not overlook.

My only grip was the overworld map can be confusing to navigate and there is no mini map. Expand

Bravo.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is an RPG where you'll need to position your team of three characters and attack enemies with weapons. There are a number of techniques available; while moving, you can run into an enemy to damage them, and characters have specific abilities. Taking guarding into account is important too, as you can avoid enemy fire, but enemies can also guard themselves from you, forcing you to think about where to put your characters so that you can both attack enemies and minimise your own damage taken.

Between battles, there are sections where you control characters around the world, solving puzzles and finding secrets. Both aspects of the gameplay are fun, and it gets quite difficult too.

The game has a lot of charm, such as the amusing weapon descriptions and interactions between the Mario cast and their Rabbid counterparts. It won't appeal to everyone, and I found that it occasionally glitches/lags, but Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a great RPG and game in general, with surprisingly deep gameplay and great music.
