If a lack of online leaderboards is a deal-breaker for you, Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo won’t be to your liking. Despite the high value I place on that feature, I found the game was able to present enough to dig into that I still got my kicks anyway. With so many unique mechas to play as, stages to challenge, mini-bosses and bosses to battle, and a bevy of unlockables, this is one shoot-em-up that just keeps on giving. If you don’t care about online score attacking, you’ll likely have an even better time with it than I did.

Continues aside, Mecha Ritz excels in other areas. Controls are smooth and precise. Graphics are stellar and would feel right at home on the original PlayStation. And I don’t talk about soundtracks often, but the one in Mecha Ritz is top-notch – energetic, electronic beats feel right at home in a world-ending robot clash. Hopefully I am wrong about the lack of continues scaring players away, because Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo is a solid shmup in all other aspects. It fit right in with my small rotation of shmup games and has become a great way to relax after a stressful day of work and life commitments.

With its simplistic sprites and standoffish pricing Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo delivers a weak first impression. But a collection of different ship types and a difficulty level that changes on the fly means that danmaku devotees shouldn’t automatically overlook Yuki “HEY” Shouhei’s effort.

A satisfactory bullet hell vertical shoot 'em up with many unlockable ships, branching paths and a dynamic difficulty that could benefit from better graphics and a more stable framerate.
