In 2018 after 30 years of unforgettable adventures the fight for everlasting peace continues! The tight action-platformer gameplay that made the series a success is alive and well. To save the day, the Blue Bomber must battle Robot Masters and take their powerful weapons for himself, which now changes the hero's appearance with new levels of detail. A new, vivid visual style refreshes the series' iconic colorfulness, combining hand-drawn environments with detailed, 3D character models. Expand

Mega Man is back in his best entry in over a decade. The controls are tight, the quality of life changes such as button mapping Rush Coil, Rush Jet, and sliding are more than welcome, and the Double Gear system becomes second nature quickly. While the main game may seem short, and a lack of fan-favorite characters is disappointing, Mega Man 11 shines in everything it does include. This truly is the triumphant return of the Blue Bomber.

The stages are beautifully designed, the music stands in serious competition with the best of the series, and the gameplay as a whole is an absolute joy to interact with.

While Mega Man 11 isn't a perfect game, it's certainly a fun one, and it establishes a solid foundation for the Blue Bomber going forward. [Issue #36 – November/December 2018, p. 80]

While some aspects of the game's presentation are surprisingly lackluster for the lauded series' triumphant return, Mega Man 11 still provides the satisfying and well-designed platforming that put Capcom on the map in the 80s.

To celebrate its late 30th birthday, the Blue Bomber comes back with a strong 11th episode which finally takes some risks. The brand new Double Gear System breezes a fresh wind on the still satisfying classic mechanics of the series. With twisted boss fights and four very well-though difficulty modes, only the very meh soundtracks might deter you from calling back this old pal.

Mega Man 11 doesn’t have to change video games, though, and it doesn’t have to inspire a new legion of followers. It just has to be as honest and good as it is.

A Mega Man sequel that, despite its flash new looks and newb-friendly approach, conservatively touts the same formula Capcom has been using these past 30 years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mega Man 11 definitely brings back old-school Mega Man with a good coat of paint. The challenge of the stages remains the same but adds power-ups to help the player in tougher spots. My only issue is that it feels like cheating to use the upgrade that gives you normal speed when using the speed gear, as you can bypass almost any obstacle with ease. Despite this, I still found this game to be an enjoyable and challenging experience and hope for more Mega Man content in the future. Expand

    ....Challenge: Adjustable
Graphics: Clean, nice simple art style. A bit too safe at times though
Sound: Does the job for the most part. Not as memorable as classic entries though
Control: Near perfect, although I accidentally bump into right joy-con stick & change weapons.
Fun Factor: Cool story, good mix of levels, welcome new features, good challenge. Not the most epic or original game out there though.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'd consider myself a Classic-Mega-Man hardcore fan, so I was really excited when MM 11 was announced. Did it live up to my expectations? Well, partly. First of all, it's not a bad game and it kept me busy for two days - but there are some flaws. Let's start with the good things first. The gameplay and the controls are tight and the concept stays true to the formula, the game has managed to catch up with the classical spirit quite well, even with the new double-gear abilities (although I often forgot about them and wondered why it's so hard in some situations). All characters and enemies are very well designed, I looks like there has been a lot of work put into them. The eight robot-stages offer good design and variety, too. Boss fights are nice and the acquired special weapons seem more useful than in some former titles. The graphics-style is not my favorite, but at least, it's acceptable.
So much for the good things, now the bad ones:

I think this game has awful music. Bounce Man Stage being the worst of all. Well, for some it might work. but I for myself just can't deal with this kind of happy-trance. Furthermore, being a huge chiptune fan, the new style is a real letdown.

And then the Wily fortress. It all looks the same, all sections feel unpolished and extremely uninspiring. Saving and buying E-Tanks between each section? Absolute no-go! Breaking with the tradition and already marking the final boss on the map, without making Wily escape once... well, please don't do that, it makes me sad.

As a fan, I would have given it a solid 8 - if it only had a better Wily-fortress. But this ruined the experience for me and made a quite solid game worse than it would have had to be.

For non-fans of the series, I am not sure if to recommend it - since the quite limited "freedom of movement" and the horizontal-only shooting may appear claustrophobic to newer generations.

I use metacritic a lot before buying games. I am a 47 year young gamer who started gaming at the age of 4 on a Philips Videopac G7000. :-)

I really like to play platformer games. My first handheld game was Donkey Kong II (game&watch multi screen). I bought Mega Man 11 because of the score here. And then after playing the game for the first time, I was like, ok, let's check the bad scores too for a change (and lets do that in the future). It is a funny game, allthough the graphics&music aren't really special. What makes the game really bad? The mechanics. It's not that I can't solve the puzzles, but the game just doesn't do what I want. The jumping is so lame, that when it matter it doesn't jump at all. And I don't see this as an extra difficulty thing, I just see it as a crap game. After playing it 2 times, I almost crashed my Switch, because it just made me mad. And I definitely like difficult platform games like Katana Zero, or Cuphead or Celeste etc. but they all run smooth and have a smooth gameplay. Big time failure for this game. Please keep your money and spend it on better developed games.
