Metroid dread is hands down my favorite Metroid game. Anyone you hear complaining about the difficulty obviously haven't played any of the great modern 2d platforms. Hollowknight and the ori games are equally hard if not more so at times. This is a refreshing take on the franchise that started the metroidvania. Hats off to Mercury Steam and Nintendo

Other than that the atmosphere is great. Everything from the soundtrack is great. It all blends together we'll. The controls are a bit sloppy. For example, you can't use the D-pad to move. In any other game that would be a silly complaint, but it's a 2D game. It just doesn't make a lot of sense given how much better moving 2D characters are with a D-pad. The joystick movement is fine, but the heat of the moment it's easy to accidentally tap it left or right while trying to dodge enemy fire. It does work great for aiming, though. It really starts to show its cracks when you get more powerups and need to hold in buttons to do what you want. The L and R buttons on the Switch are already extremely small on the Joy-Cons and they aren't the best buttons to hold in for things like aiming anyways. Why not make that the ZL button instead? It just feels more natural. Also, why do I have to hold in the R button for the missiles and ZL button for the grappling hook? Why not just use the - button to cycle through them? It just makes more sense. It's not that holding in the buttons is difficult as much as it is extremely pointless and frustrating at times, especially since your normal beam attacks don't work on bosses. You either need to charge shot or use missiles, the latter of which is much faster. So, again, why not use the - button to cycle through weapons, since you'll most likely stick with missiles on the bosses anyways, then use the R and ZR buttons for something like the radar and free up the D-pad for movement? I don't get why Nintendo chose toap the buttons like that.

The cast of enemies is great with a fantastic variety that changes depending on where you are as well, which really makes the atmosphere feel alive. The E.M.M.I. are great enemies, and the selling point Nintendo was banking on, but after the first couple encounters I felt like it experienced the pitfall so many indie horror games fall into with the same mechanic in that it just stops being scary or intimidating real fast and sometimes becomes annoying. After a while the annoyance turned to apathy and now I just see them as minor obstacles.

To me this game's big selling point isn't the E.M.M.I. but the challenge this game presents. It's not the hardest Metroid game in existence, but it's difficulty is much higher than most games recently, especially Nintendo's efforts. Frankly, I love the challenge. And I also love the brief cinematic cutscenes that only take a couple seconds but help you understand how to tackle a boss or challenge. This game isn't for everyone, but Metroidvania fans and people who love a bit of difficulty will love it.

A true masterpiece and an instant classic. The Switchs best single player experience since Astral Chain more than 2 years ago. My only problem with it is the load time between areas can take like 30 seconds. For a game that's normally extremely fast paced it's very noticable. Nintendo should have released a switch pro along side this.

After I started playing it again, watching also videos about sequence breaking and how deep the game becomes if you really try to discover all the secrets in this world design and gameplay, I really start to believe this is a true masterpiece, and the game designers really did an amazing job expecting the players experimenting many different ways to complete it. My History - Have only ever played the NES game without completing it, and have completed Super Metroid earlier this year for the first time, that is my entire history with the series.

Story - You are given story in little sections and with some cutscenes in the more intense moments, it is not heavy in any way and very easy to follow, even giving you a little recap of the story up to this point at the beginning of the game which is nice. I enjoyed it overall, I loved how simplistic it was and had some nice twists.

Graphics & Performance - I only played the game while docked and the game ran fantastic for me, only stuttering that occurred was in loading screens, otherwise was nice and smooth. Graphics were fantastic as well, a lot of the levels were very atmospheric, you could see a lot of care and attention was put into the backgrounds as you could see enemies leaping around in the background or the local habitat doing their thing. The game looks dark and beautiful.

Combat - If you are a fan of Super Metroid then I see a lot of similarities here but more refined, a lot of the power ups you tend to pick up are from Super Metroid but has some cool new additions as well, I loved the parry move which you can use on certain enemies to get some additional energy and ammo, this for boss fights was typically used as a quick time event which wasn't something that I cared for, but I had a wonderful time with the combat, never felt like your standard enemies were very difficult.

Boss Fights - This game has had a lot of attention for being difficult and yeah I can agree that it is not an easy game, but I played Metroid Dread before reading any reviews and I am not particularly fond of mean and very difficult games, but not once did I feel this was beyond my skill level. Boss fights is where your skills are put to the test, but even if you die, you will always spawn right outside the room you did the fight in, you won't respawn from the last save point, that is something different from Super Metroid and is a big game changer for me. I could jump straight back in and do the fight again, even if I were to die a few times, each time I would progress further and learn their move patterns and the counter attacks for them, if this is something you are not interested in doing in a boss fight then I would suggest sticking with more lighter games. The final boss took me 6-7 times to defeat and yes there was some frustration but each time I did better and better once I learned the moves and I felt so satisfied when I beat it. This is all dependent on your skill level but I feel the difficulty may be getting too much of a negative view when it really isn't as bad as other games I have played.

EMMI - The first few are fun, the more it goes on, the more annoying it becomes. The first few it is more fun to get caught and just run across the level and parkour your way to the exit, I found so much enjoyment in this, but later you encounter far less paths to avoid them, EMMI can appear right in front of a door you enter, the counter window to avoid instant death is not very forgiving, and I just wasn't a fan of having to sit there and wait for EMMI to go away, only to move a little and then have EMMI detect my movements again. This is probably the weakest point of the game in my view, luckily you don't have to deal with them too much and as I said, it is only the later few that really bother me.

Exploration - I really enjoyed this, some reviews I have seen have suggested that the game never gives tips on where you need to go so you get lost easily, but I disagree completely, there is only 1-2 times I got confused on where to go, but for the most part the game is very clever about leading you on a path of where you need to go, if you get a certain item then odds are there is a place nearby to use that item to progress, its about studying your surroundings and reviewing the map from time to time, and that is what Metroidvania-type games are all about. I thought the developers did a good job of not telling you where to go but leaving you with enough to still figure it out without any major issues. Level design is great in that aspect.

Music - Some really dark and ominous tunes play during this game, plus some classics from the Metroid series. Enjoyed the music overall and am hunting for that soundtrack.

Final Review - I think this was a fantastic game, had about 9 hours of playtime with it and completed it within 3 days between work and my personal life. I probably enjoyed this one more than Super Metroid but that is mostly because I felt Super Metroid had some elements that were a little dated or I needed a walkthrough to help me out, while this one I felt more in control of what I was doing and more satisfied with how I progressed. Give it a shot!

Not much this game does, that gets it on my bad site but I do think the damage output of enemies is a bit too harsh at times. Although on the other hand it makes you feel so much better ones you topped off your upgrades and such though there still will be enemies that get on your nerve with that.
The checkpoints are more that fairly planted but why do you have to manually skip cut-scenes EVERY TIME! This gets extremely annoying after your third death and you will die, often at that on bosses. My average death-count just on bosses must be 7 or more. You do understand bosses once you died enough but they still will challenge you and there will be times where you wonder "how the heck do I avoid that" or "did I hurt it or not, I can't tell" but keep on going and you will overcome. I think the boss that was the hardest to me took about an hour to beat with die and repeat.
Most optional upgrades will be not too difficult to obtain and while not mandatory can help you out. You shouldn't have to much trouble getting them with some more movement options and the game helps you pretty well on keeping track around the area they are hidden. Still, my percentage to Item completion was 91 % by the end of the game. I really only missed (from what I can tell) some that required crazy Speedbooster shenanigans and Morphball movements over fall blocks even with the X-Bomb upgrade and Nintendo should have made it easier for players like my but by no means they make or break finishing the game.

Loading time happens only when going to an new/different region of the game and are tolerable though I wouldn't mind shaving of half of it. Otherwise the game runs quiet stable and fast and I never noticed any slowdowns or hickups. I found the graphics pretty good for 2.5D sidescroller on Switch (docked mind you, I never use the Switch to play mobile), if you have any issues with that you have some delusional standards and should get your head checked.

For the controls, they are mostly good but I have an issue with having to press in the Analog Stick I move with for movement options and it sucks that you can't aim with missiles or the Beam and walk at the same time. It always gave me headaches that you have to keep the Grapple Beam pressed when using it, I never got used to it. Luckily you don't use it that often to get at you. The Space Jump also doesn't work as good as I wanted it and troubled me sometimes. Do better Next Mission Nintendo.
The Melee-counter mechanics did overstay there welcome a bit and were basically mandatory at later points in the game and nothing this tedious should be mandatory so much.

There are some things that keep this from being a perfect game, in my opinion. While I loved the concept of being chased by an indomitable foe akin to the experience teased in Fusion and in the Aliens franchise Metroid was inspired by, I never got quite the same sense of fear. I never felt dread in the sci-fi horror genre sense of the word. The E.M.M.I. are panic-inducing and because they are confined to marked zones, they came to feel like more of an annoyance than a scary experience that might pop up unexpectedly (I would've preferred the latter). I didn't really care for the presentation of her ship's computer, Adam, as compared to this game's predecessor, Fusion. I found that there was a lack of true exploration until you get far into the game. Even then, at any given point in the game I found that I was confined to a set path due to the set of complex locks that might open or close at each point in your progress. I also wish it was easier to navigate the labyrinth-like map, wish that you could teleport from one area to a distant area rather than just having lots of conduits between areas that are adjacent to each other. The game is also very difficult, particularly the bosses and E.M.M.I. zones. As long as you go into them knowing that you will die a lot and have to memorize patterns and windows of opportunity, you can avoid much frustration. However, once you do master the boss patterns, it is exhilarating.

I mention a lot of gripes. But I was filled with awe throughout my experience with this game regardless. With a lot of patience, I found it to be a great overall experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is amazing. I love the exploration, as well as the background as one explores. The controls feel natural and well managed (except the E.M.M.I gun thing, it's a bit awkward).
There are times where the story felt a little .. guided, more so than I would like from an explorative title. I did not like or appreciate the fact that missables were highlighted on the map (even to the point were zones would flash if one missed something in a zone).
I have a standard of $1/hr minimum of entertainment from a game (so if it costs $80 I expect 80 hr of game play. This includes the time to achievement hunt, and or 100% a game). This game fall short of that, but that's ok in this case.

As a Super Metroid enthusiast, and now just getting in the world of the current indie Metroidvania titles (like Hollow Knight), I feel safe too say that Dread is a very good game. It still has some points to improve on future releases of the franchise, but the core of it, Nintendo got right:

    PROS:

    - Samus movement and skills: fluid, intuitive, responsive, fast. A blast to play

    - Difficulty: while I disagree with the people saying the game is way too hard, I think the developers should have put an easy mode for more casual player or even for the pre teen part of the Nintendo audience. But I personally think that they did a perfect job in tuning the difficulty, because while the game has its very difficult parts, the punishment for dying is almost zero! You can immediately try again from the boss door or e.m.m.i. zone entrance, with the exact same resources you had on your last try. What ends up happening is that you do die a lot on bosses, but your skill development rate also gets optimised, and when you get better at a game, thats when it gets really fun.

Combat: most boss fights are really carefully developed. And overall combat is pretty cool

    Graphics: very smooth

    CONS:

Forced linearity: In order to prevent the player from getting lost, the developers made backtracking impossible for most of the game. That takes away a good chunk of the exploration that made Metroid (and Metroidvanias) great in the first place. There's also not really an instance where you can get stronger to fight a certain boss (except for the last boss) since there's not many new items you have access to on any certain part of the game.

Repetitve themes: The e.m.m.i. is great, but it should occur only once or twice. Some repetitive bosses too (Chozo Soldiers, Chozo Robot Soldiers)

Atmosphere: for me, there's no dread in Metroid: Dread. No real sense of isolation or any of the classic Metroid atmosphere. It is not a horror sci-fi game, it is a great adventure action game, and thats the atmosphere I got from it.

Soundtrack: No memorable music like in the classics. They do repeat some of the classic themes every now and then, and those are the best tunes.

I feel like I should really emphasize the art style and the environments because they really pop and look incredible everywhere you go.

The gameplay is great. The abilities come at a nice clip, and there are a lot of them. And they do a great job of making you feel more powerful as you go. Combat is fun, and the bosses battles are amazing and fun. Yes they are hard. Yes you will die a lot. The great part about this game is that it lets you retry immediately. It's almost like a roguelike at times where you get better at a part by replaying it over and over. A boss or EMMI encounter that seems impossible at first suddenly becomes easy. It's definitely empowering. I never found the difficulty to be too much (I'm near endgame)

The only other thing I'd like to point out in closing is that Samus is totally badass in this game.

10/10 must play if you own a Switch.

My first gripe with this game is: the story, it starts good... But then goes places that are a little bit silly and over the tip.
The second gripe i have with this game is how unintuitive some paths are... At least twice i got stuck in an area cause the game loves to lock you up in a confined area till you realize a small block that you can destroy and move forward.

Aside from these small problems i loved this game ,.would definitely recommend!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My first impressions weren’t great for the first 3 or 4 hours I just wanted to play Super Metroid again. But it took off very well. I like the story focus, not a fan that it was boiled down to Samus having daddy issues I thought we got over that in Other M. But otherwise the story is really nice. Graphics are really clean, everything looks amazing, everything feels amazing. It’s really fun just to run around, trying out a new power up. I don’t think there’s a bit of sequence breaks which is disappointing, it is pretty linear, but you can infinite bomb so maybe there are some. The final boss was hard as hell but very satisfying when you finally beat him and the ending is nice. I’m not touching hard mode with a 100 foot Pole. Overall good game definitely not perfect. But for the fabled Dread that we were waiting 15 years on, it met a lot of expectations. Expand

Game's not perfect I can tell, let me comment you 3 issues: music, map and difficulty. No OST that you would remember tomorrow, ADAMs voice is annoying and newcomers to the saga gonna suffer with difficulty, boss sections are unfair and unbalanced... that sucks. The map is a pain in the arse, confusing, with bad icons and references I dont get it because Samus Returns got a decent map. Talking about good things in this game combat is smooth, dope and exciting. Boss fights are creative and almost every one of them the best of the saga. Animations and cinematics are beautiful. Duration is good just like other games of the main line. 8/10 Expand

On top of this extremely polished experience we also get to live in a time when a truly difficult Metroid game is a reality. Samus' increased mobility and her new defensive movements allowed for more intense fights later on in the game. There's even one boss with a legitimate physical combo. A lot of people have complained about the difficulty but honestly the game is built to where the difficulty can be altered by your own pick-ups. My game was extremely difficult as I had skipped a lot of items, the final boss destroyed me multiple times, but it was never impossible. If you don't like very hard games the beginning may kick you down but as you go along make certain to go for as many pick-ups as you possibly can.

    Some general tips:
The flash shift can't go through enemies but you can jump and use it over them.
The E.M.M.I will almost always walk onto the last location it heard you. If you use the phantom cloak, be sure to walk into an alcove close by after activating it to make sure it doesn't bump into you.
You have access to your entire arsenal after a counter.
Running away from an E.M.M.I is always a viable strategy. If you get too stressed, pause the game and scan the map screen for a way out.
The game tends to funnel you into the intended sequence of events, for your first playthrough its easiest to take the path of least resistance.
The game is replayable. Find a cool movement tech at the end of the game? Start a new file later! Who knows you might use it to get something early.

This game deserves immense praise, sales numbers that blow Nintendo away and a lasting legacy. A 10/10 is the only thing I could ever give it.

To debunk a couple, this is not a short game, and the controls are some of the most innovative the series has ever seen. I domt know why someone would either lie, or review a game they didn't even play,, but whatever. Besides that, I also see alot of people complaining about the difficulty, and misunderstanding that they only made it hard because of the name dread. Metroid is an old series, and the challenge was part of what made it memorable. Being forced to explore, and finding hidden upgrades, was all part of it. Challenging, massive bosses was part of the atmosphere. Samus is all alone, and her enemies are way stronger,, but her skill carries her through to victory. Even then, Dread is not impossibility hard. I partially amputated my left hand the day before Christmas eve. After 3 surgeries, a nerve graft, and a tendon transfer, 4 of my fingers are still numb, so I can't tell when I'm pressing buttons, my thumb is partially paralyzed, and when it does move, it's only in one direction, and it moves in unison with my pointer finger. Yet even I am able to master this game. The game is challenging, and requires you to use the skills you gain in order to beat the game, but that makes it more immersive and enjoyable, you feel overpowered because of your skill, not overpowered in the sense that you have infinite or automatically restoring health as most modern games do. This game, reminds me of my childhood, of having to master new skills in order to progress in a game, like you would in real life. It's been a long time since I felt a sense of accomplishment after finally mastering a pattern, and beating a boss easily when previously I would die almost instantly. This is how video games used to be, they took practice, skill, and motivation. It says alot for the state of our society, that people can't stand any form of challenge at all, even in a game. Do these people realize that this is nothing compared to how hard old games were? Do they also realize that 3rd graders used to master games like this all the time? I don't understand, boss fights are supposed to be challenging, you aren't supposed to be able to just sloppily blast your way through them without paying attention. Why even have a boss fight if the only difference between it and regular enemies, is a cinematic scene? If all you want to do is watch a massive enemy die, and not actually do it yourself, then just watch people on twitch! Don't ruin video games for the rest of us by demanding they all be 90% cinematic scenes with no challenging gameplay. People used to be embarrassed to complain about the difficulty of a game. I think lots of people could use a bit of shame in their lives. This game deserves to be rated in the high 9's, yet because of all of these pansies who actually want interactive movies, and not video games, this absolute masterpiece is rated lower than it should be. This is one of the best video games of all time, and spoiled brats who can't bother with putting in a miniscule amount of effort, are hurting its legacy. The developers took to heart all the criticism of the past games, and brought the series back to its roots. People complained because they had made metroid easier, and made it more linear and had taken much of the freedom away. People were begging for a game like super metroid for almost 30 years. They finally made the game everyone was begging for, and now a bunch of "longtime metroid fans" (yeah right) complain about everything all the actual fans begged for for 30 years. Mark my words, this game will be played for decades to come, while the stupid, interactive movie games these naysayers love so much, will be totally forgotten. If you have a competitive nature, or just want to know what video games used to feel like, but with modern polish, HD graphics, and a smooth 60 fps, give this game a try. You won't be disappointed. And if you don't like freedom, getting better, or accomplishing anything, and would rather watch a movie while you hold a controller and push a button every now and then, just do everyone a favor, get Netflix or twitch, and stop complaining that video games are too much like video games, and not enough like movies. What a bunch of whiney brats. Peace y'all. Expand

The graphics are very good compared to other Nintendo Switch titles.
The technology of the game is good as well, with mostly 60 FPS during normal gameplay. The In-Engine cutscenes are OK, with 30 FPS and sometimes some weird animations and movement from Samus, which can be accepted.
The story of the game is somewhat predictable, but story never has been the strength of the Metroid-Series and is not the focus of the game.
The visual design of the world sometimes can get a bit repetitive, but that is rare and forgivable.
The map-design of the world is very good, and it feels very satisfying to explore and search for secrets, even tho' you wont really be able to do that for the first half of the game.
The difficulty is high but fair, which I like. The boss fights are challenging and the enemies deal a lot of damage, but drop a lot of healing and ammo as well.
The gameplay is exactly what you would want and expect from a 2D Metroid: travelling around blasting your foes, searching for upgrades, jumping and climbing, backtracking etc. Even some legendary boss characters from the series are back. The beloved sequence breaking is back and even encouraged, but the game is, if you want, very linear as well.
The new E.M.M.I.-Sequences are cool and hectic, but only really scary for the first time. They really can get annoying and frustrating later in the game, and they are obvious. They could've been hidden or mixed up a bit in the later game.

To sum up: Metroid Dread is a great game, probably the best Nintendo Switch Game of 2021. It is totally worth of being a game from the Metroid-Series and I would recommend everyone to buy the game, whether you are a fan of the series or not.

Visually comparable to XBLA games in memory but not in actuality, the animation workflow is fast and fluid you'll wish to see done in other genres.

One of the few Switch games that support 5.1 Surround sound, though most of the music is atmospheric similar to Super Metroid's original scores, and simply no scores similar to classic or Fusion's rocking scores outside of rearrangements of classic melodies.

Basic first runs can be completed in 8-12 hours depending on experimentation, but second runs can be beaten in less than 4 hours, with some speedrunners attempting to break less than 2 hours as of this review.

The only downsides is simply being a game on aging Nintendo hardware, while native 720p in handheld mode the post-process free 900p in dock mode may look simply too crunchy on modern 4KTVs. Hard mode is unlocked completing the game, but hardmode simply just makes the enemies do insane damage but all still die the same as normal mode it's simply a mode to challenge hardcore enthusiasts and not recommended for clumsy players, you'll be able to beat normal/hard mode in the same time frame if you never get hit once.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My favorite game of all time was Super Metroid. Now it is tied with Metroid Dread. The only Metroid I haven't completed is the original on NES. I prefer the 2d games over prime as well. The movement in this game is so buttery smooth and rewarding. I really liked the new mechanics in Samus returns although the walk up-stop-counter was kinda heavy in that game. It felt a little slow movement wise too. Dread came through and perfected that. I wouldn't mind it being a little longer in-between power ups. Especially when you hit like 75% of the game and just go on an upgrade spree. I completely understand the gripes that other people give this game with the EMMI and other aspects of difficulty. To me though it gave the game more depth than just monsters to fight. You are also being hunted by the research robots that the federation deployed. I love the transitions to everything being x parasite infested and the changing environments. I am not a huge fan of a lot of cut scenes and story being forced down my throat but this game had some A1 cut scenes that just added to the bada$$ persona that is Samus. Especially that first boss kill shot. Gets me every time. I have high hopes for Metroid going forward and my favorite part of the game, big spoiler.....THE LAST METROID IS SAMUS, THE GALAXY WILL NEVER BE AT PEACE! Love this game and whenever I start it up it's so hard to put down.PS as a Metroid fiend I didn't find it as difficult as some say. Could be because I am playing on a Monitor and not a TV so it's basically no input delay. Thank you Nintendo and Mercury Steam for giving us this absolute delight! Expand

Even tough this is my first Metroid game, I absolutely cannot wait to play the other games if they're all of the same phenomenal quality as Metroid Dread, with it's amazing level design, Challenging but fun bosses and it's ability to convey a story in such few words.

There are spots that do feel unfair - but the game autosaves just before you enter them, so there isn't a whole lot of lost progress (though, having to replay cutscenes is annoying, even if you just have to hit [+], [-] to get past 'em.

There's also very little music and, while that does lend to the atmosphere, I found myself missing it.

Those two minor issues is the only reason I don't give it a 10. Still, amazing entry in the series, and absolutely worthy of being a Metroid.

The tension is real. It's not "cinematic tension" followed by some easy BS designed to look scary but be easy -- it's tense because it's *actually tense.*

And it's relentless. Nothing is handed to you. Everything is earned. It doesn't even ever tell you where to go except in broad sweeping generalization like "you need to work your way up toward your ship." And I *love* that about this game.

Yes, there are moments that are frustrating. But there's no un-dodgeable BS. Just stuff that you haven't figured out how to pay attention to yet, or moves that you're not utilizing enough yet.

And if you don't like difficult games, I'll just say this one's not for you. Don't darken it with your "it was too hard" whines. Go back to playing Super Mario Odyssey on Assist Mode.

You acquire a mix of new and returning power ups which all do a fantastic job of making combat and navigation more fun. The map is very large and interconnected, and there are tons of secret items to seek out. This game is incredibly difficult, however the difficulty is very fair. There is no punishment for death aside from respawning from a checkpoint and the game frequently reminds you that every attack is avoidable, so at worst, defeating a boss will take a lot of patience while you learn their move sets.

Dread is also atmospherically great. The background artwork is probably the strongest feature in this regard. You can tell a lot of work was put into making the backgrounds tell their own stories while being visually striking. The music is mostly ambient and so does a lot to enhance the atmosphere of this game, however I would like to have heard some more iconic bangers like the series is known for.

Finally, the writing and story sequences are amongst the best Metroid has ever seen. If you're a series fan, this is an absolute hands down must play for the lore. Additionally, this is arguably the best depiction of Samus as a character (leagues better than some Other entries).

Overall, Metroid Dread was a blast to play!

I have been enjoying my play through thoroughly and have no issues with the e.m.m.i they are great additions to the series. You have to have a gameplan you have to be cautious. I love that. People complain all the time about stuff like this. If you want to play metroid and you want a challenge here you are.
