This is a fair, thorough review. The original game was better, here's why:

The *game* is more like a puzzle, you're supposed to figure out how to create situations with the pokemon using the tools you've been given. Can't figure out how to move onto the next level? Figure it out. New Pokemon snap has removed the puzzle solving element of the game almost entirely. Levels are unlocked, not through unique and cool discoveries, but through a mundane leveling system that literally locks certain pokemon from a level until you grind through it a few times....

This game in total is 6 HOURS TO COMPLETE. 6 hours, including cutscenes, tutorials, and story segments. No, not all of the Pokémon are in the game, maybe about 15-20%, there are no secret paths, or special evolutions, this is a very basic game, that only improves from the original with graphics, in terms of gameplay there are very little in terms of significant improvements. I can't even recommend this game over the original, as it felt special, and you earned abilities that really made the game feel special, and the photographs felt unique and interesting. In 'New' Pokémon Snap, you gain star ratings for photos, that seem to be entirely random, sometimes you'll get 4 stars for an idle Pokémon, and sometimes it's 3 stars, pretty much random and never explained in game. This game much like the Pokémon franchise in general as of late is completely overhyped, and undelivers in nearly every single aspect. Do not buy this game, it is a complete waste of your money, and your time. Expand

After seeing how hyped some people were to play this game, I decided to check it out. Here are my thoughts on it:
It's a $60 game where all you do is... take pictures of Pokémon. That's it. That's all you do. For $60.
This game sums what Nintendo does at its best: relying on nostalgia to sell low-effort, overpriced exclusives. I admit, they have 2 great exclusive titles for the Switch

New Pokémon Snap literally looks and plays like it could be a $10 game for iOS and Android and I'm not even joking. If anything, it should be a mini-game in the main series, because there's not enough substance for it to be a full-priced standalone game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Many times I have criticized previous Pokémon games for the same problem, so my criteria will be consistent with this one.
That there are only 200 pokémon and little else, considering that there are currently 1000, is a lack of respect for TPCI when it comes to spin-offs.

I don't ask for all the existing pokémon to be there, but at least half would have been something more appropriate, as well as more open areas to explore and have some control where we want to go to take photos.
New Pokémon Snap feels like a short game whose potential was left halfway, in pursuit of making more money with the brand.

This game is primarily an upgrade to the original N64 game in a variety of ways. Sure, no mid stage evolutions is a huge loss, but in return, you have a variety of Pokemon from every generation, well animated and everything. And for those of you complaining about the game's length, the original N64 game was short as well. Is it worth 60 dollars? Pokemon Sw/Sh disappointed me a lot, it felt lacking and rushed. new Pokemon snap for me tho, is a game that makes me feel like im a child again, exploring the routes, discovering secrets, watching the pokemon in aw. This sequel is all I've ever wanted from it: it's charming, cute und strangely addictive.
It has a great replay value because for each location there are research levels (1-4) On each level theres new things happening, for example new interactions or even new Pokemon. The Pokemon get more comfortable to you and i can't help but care for all of them (new snap made me love Pokemon i didnt care about before like Bidoof lol). You also discover secret branches in each areas that lead you to discover entirely new things! There's tons of hidden stuff and secrets.
I particularly love that most courses have a night version too! My god, going through the jungle at night, watching all the glowing plants and lights is gorgeous!! I replayed the jungle probably 30 times and i still didn't explore everything. Each Pokemon has 4 different poses worth of stars too, so like bidoof for example, when he's just chilling its 1 star, when he's eating an apple it's 2 stars, when he's building his dam it's 3 stars and 4 stars you get when you snap him swimming happily. For me it's a ton of fun trying to get all 4 stars for every Pokemon.
Yes, it's true, not all Pokemon are included in this game. My favorite Pokemon for example isn't included and you know what? That's absolutely fine! Imagine 700+ Pokemon in 4 different stars, i'd get so tired. I'd rather have less Pokemon but those added being charming and cute.

The only thing I'd maybe criticize would be that Pokemon evolving is mising in the game & maybe the music. The courses are without music but then again, you hear the environment, the cries of the Pokemon and more, which makes it feel more realistic.

To everyone who loved the original: pick this game up, I promise you'll love it.
If you're new to the series: if you don't mind that there's no fighting and rather you'd like to observe and explore, give this game a go. I tend do be very critical with games, but this one I absolutely love!

    Conclusion:

    + gorgeous environments
+ adorbale Pokemon that feel alive and real
+ tons of stuff to explore, like secret branches in areas
+ night time of the courses is BEAUTIFUL & there's different pokemon!
+ research levels & 4 star point systems give replay value for each course
+ diverse courses: jungle, park, desert, deep sea flooring, beach, forest & more
+ sharing pictures with friends online, you can see their snaps
+ requests give extra challenge, like snapping a Pokemon in a rare pose etc.
+ noises in each area are amazing

    - music could be better
    - I miss seeing Pokemon evolve

I haven't played the original yet, I always wanted to as a child, but didn't have the money to buy it, and this one, all these years later, gave me a nice feel of nostalgic fulfilment. Yes, there could be more mechanics, I get it. I just think my expectations are so low about nintendo and specially pokemon games, that I can enjoy anything is not just terrible thousand times repeated stuff.

New Pokemon Snap has been highly-awaited, and really, why the hell has it taken Nintendo over two decades? They haven't hesitated to milk the mainstream Pokemon games into oblivion. Anyway, does the game live up to our excessive nostalgia? Well, it basically does, yeah.

The graphics are charming, however if you have played any Pokemon game from the last decade they will not be too surprising. Nintendo seem to be scared to hire new artists. Having said that, there is nothing bad about the graphics my qualm would be that it's not exactly living up to it potential - it doesn't really look like two decades have passed. A few scenes are quite nice when it's colourful and out in the open, however too often we're drawn into dark caves that do little for the eyes.

The gameplay is key to Pokemon Snap and I don't think there is much here to complain about. It can be incredibly fun to watch the Pokemon in their natural habitat and try to capture their photo at just the right moment. I don't think a huge amount has changed from the first game and in this case that's not a bad thing.

When first playing through the game I found the levels to be a little threadbare and barren of Pokemon and interesting sights. I then discovered that as you progress this increases, although sometimes not by much. I also think they did themselves a disservice by making the legendary Pokemon obscured and hard to find without looking it up online.

What may infuriate some people is that it's not a fast game. It's designed to be more chilled however the menus and dialog I found to be painfully slow at times.

The rating system for photos is mostly okay, but a few times it can become and arbitrary pain in the butt as it chooses how many stars to give your photo. Also, the grinding can be ridiculous to get to level 3 and beyond for most levels.

The story makes a refreshing change from the mainline games with a familiar face or two popping up. What I like is how you could basically play through the game and pay the story minimal attention and not have your experience hindered. Some of the Pokemon choices involved did seem a bit curious, but again that can also be refreshing.

Overall, if you came to have your Pokemon Snap itch scratched, I think you will leave quite satisfied. The game seems to pride itself on replayability and I did find myself going back after the credits rolled and that's not something I do a lot. It could probably have benefitted from a bit more imagination in the level design and more Pokemon, although it definitely has a lot more Pokemon than the original!

To sum the game up, it is fun everytime you unlock new material, and feels oppressive until you reach the next milestone.

Overall I enjoyed my time with the game. I thought it was pretty, I thought it had a lot to see and photograph. But it only just barely bellies up past the bar of mediocre. So why? 1. It misses the spirit of the first game in many ways 2. replaying feels

    2. replaying feels stressful and confusing as to what you need to photograph, instead of photographing what you want

What I really enjoyed here was the amount of pokemon on each map is way up. To be expected with better hardware. Changing your controls and sensitivity is welcome, and so many games need control options. This isn't 1999, so bonus points for that. Like the original game the score doesn't follow what actually looks good, but hey that is expected. However it is not so clear what makes a good shot anymore. Size score isn't consistent anymore strangely. They also give you 4 behaviors per pokemon to capture and I love this idea. However, sometimes it seems impossible to know the difference between any behaviors at all, and even more odd, two different behaviors are often considered the same. WHY? So if you play this game and don't know what you did wrong, it might be nothing, try a similar shot again.

Honestly as annoyed as I am at $60 games for the less potent games, like zelda links awakening remake, I think this game is actually priced appropriately. Maybe $50 would have been better, but now that Playstation games are $70 I'll take what I can get.

What can I say, I agree with most people. While I actually don't mind a XP system, I don't like HOW it is used. The original game rewarded your clever thinking to unlock new areas. But now you have to grind for xp to unlock the next level in a map or new map altogether. I would have loved the XP system to unlock different cameras or camera gear like a longer range or wider field lens. An infrared attachment, a rapid fire attachment etc. Same with the on rails cart, maybe choose different cart attachments, like a stealth version, one that can get taller for a better view, or a faster or slower cart depending on your needs, a booster perhaps? Breaks?

What I like is how the pokemon interact with the environment, but I wish there was more chance to effect the pokemon with my actions. I remember how often you could actually make pokemon evolve by coaxing them into a certain area or feeding them apples. What I do appreciate is more of the map paths with a single "boss" like encounter. Though again, I feel the level up system is not helping it out at all.

Lumina orbs are really cool, and I find them a fine enough change over pester balls, I get it, round corners so that you don't make babies cry at the pokemon being bothered by pester balls, but I wish they did a little more with them and remove the scan feature. I hate the scan feature, it seems very lazy and unintuitive. I feel like I need to scan because I don't know when or where scans will help or do something, it is a general sweep instead of giving me the chance to target a spot like with apples and lumina orbs(or pester balls in the past). Its only use is for when a path branches, and it doesn't seems to be useful for that either, why not just let me hit a button to go to the fork without scanning in the first place? It isn't like you are unlocking new paths with clever actions anyhow.

In the end, I enjoyed it. A bit of stress took a lot out, and the spirit of the game was forgotten with not much in the way of innovation. Still, I look forward to perhaps some DLC maps to bring more life to the game in the next year. Perhaps a visit to the original maps and meeting Professor Oak would be a cool idea. As it stands though, I can't rate the game as highly as the first game, short as it was to beat. The first game never overstayed its welcome, at times this game can drag. Skip this unless you are the type who likes to %100 games, otherwise the XP system will be frustrating and take you out of the fun of photographing wildlife in search of some silly particular photo.

Here you selectyour charcter, youre given a camera to go research pokemon for professor mirror… and the progression is the same as last time, you take as many picture as you can, the best you can, get graded on the pictures.. and once you’ve earned enough experience in an area youll go back to the lab, be given new info to drive the story along and youre back at it.. however this time around areas level up, each time you level up there will be new pokemon for you to find and interact with… as as you progress the story youll be given new items, like these balls to make pokemon and plants glow… andthis ime around, this on rails shooter feels more like going through aworld that’s lived in rathr han a world a bunch of pokemon are just running around in. there are veen day and nights versions of most levels, and even these illumine spots where you take pictures of legendary glowing pokemon… unfortunately though, new pokemon snap, while it is a heaftier and more substantial game, taking me about 10 hours to complete.. it isn’t as magical as the original. Simply because new pokemon snap is just overly complicated… what I loved about the original pokemon snap is its feeling of discovery… you got pictures and found pokemon simply by organically interacting with the world, throwing fruit, playing your flute, something ctaching your eye. Making a voltorb explode to unlock a new area… it felt like pure magic discovering something new.. here in new pokemon snap, everything is overly complicated and too high-tech… its constat axiety of waiting for the scan bubble to pup up, pressing the scan button, scanning whatever object the game wants you to check out, try to quickly read the text and do what you think the ame wants you to do in that moment… even taking new paths requires a scan, rather than again, making a voltorb explode, or make a pokemon explode a rock.. it has its moments of this, but not nearly enough.. which brings me to the pokemon.. im a litte confused on how leveling up areas work, as you only get credit on new pictures that score better than the last picture… so if I get a really good picture of picachu on this level, pickachu doesn’t count towards my score for this new level? So I just ignore older pokemon? To be fair there is a star system here to help combat this as you can get a 1-4 star picture, but that star system disrespect your time as a player.. you could get 3 different star level photos of the same pokemon, but youre only allowed submitting one picture for each pokemon you take a picture of.. even though you have a free space for that star level in your album… its annoying and forces grind a handful of times during the campaign, when youre just trying to unlock the next section… let me go back and get a different star picture of the same pokemon so I can move on… which brings me to the illumina spots.. these are just lame.. 2 out of the 5 are cool. But for the most part its just a stretched out boring slog of trying to hit these giant pokemon with an apple and a glowing ball for 5 minutes, and getting a picture of them glowing, while nothing cool happens around.. easily the weakest aspect of pokemon snap.. but I do like the idea and concept.. we just need a little more heart racing action…
Overall through /I love bew pokemon snp, despite its world feeling not so magical.. id love a follow up down the line that impliments more organic discovery, and less scan all of these items…
    I give new ppokemon snap

This is an enjoyable bout that I've been waiting to get my hands on for many years at this point. I had a good time playing this game and while I have yet to finish the game completely, I believe I've played enough to form a solid opinion on it. I will go over key points as to the great parts and the problems of this cute and interesting snap-a-thon.

    Graphics: The game looks phenomenal.

Everything looks beautiful on the eyes and I enjoy going to new places in order to see the excellent landscapes that have been built from the ground up. Also seeing my favorite Pokemon roam around in gorgeous HD is a sight I've been waiting to see forever!

It is "New" Pokemon Snap! (At least for the most part): If you played the original game, this game does build on it in multiple ways. As mentioned the graphics are of course upgraded, and the number of Pokemon you can encounter has tripled. There are also more settings to see these little critters live their lives. We also get the addition of "Illumina Pokemon" which are an interesting concept at first, but kind of falls flat as time goes on (We'll get back to them in a second). Unfortunately, the game also removes Pokémon evolving from the first game, which is extremely depressing as it was an exciting part of the N64 original. So I would say generally, the game has a lot more to offer than the original but some parts do fall a tiny bit flat.

The Game can get really repetitive: With the game clocking in at just under 10 hours, and many of the core game mechanics being given to you shortly after you start, you begin to wonder what will keep you interesting for the remaining few hours. And honestly, not a lot does. Barring times you get into new areas, a lot of the natural and interesting parts of the game become boring as you see the same Pokémon doing the same actions over and over again. Taking the same photos as you've taken half a dozen times before doesn't make for a really interesting time at many points. And going back to Illumina Pokémon, they are perhaps the biggest disappointment in this game as there is little interest in them as their stages are 5 minute, 'boss-fight' esc excursions where you take a photo of the same Pokemon 40 times and this "Illumina Pokemon" is nothing more than a glowing, large version of a Pokemon we've seen multiple times in past Pokemon games.

The Star System: In New Pokemon Snap, there is a very uninteresting star system that makes it even more of a bore to get 100%. Basically, depending on how you take a photo, some images get 1 star, 2 stars, 3 stars, or 4 stars. These ratings depends on a number of events happening, like if the Pokemon is eating one of the fluffberries, maybe it'll get 2 stars or if its doing something because of an ingame-event that you causes maybe It'll get 4 stars. The concept is boring and repetitive, especially because you can only choose one of these photos at a time, so you need to get all 4 stars each time you go around. It's not very good, and if a Snap 3 ever comes out I think it's something that needs a good amount of changing.

In conclusion I would recommend this game to you if you are interested in getting it. But if a game like Pokemon Snap doesn't really interest you all too much I wouldn't purchase it, or not until that hefty 60 dollar price tag decides to drop. It's a fun game that I feel many OG Pokemon Snap players would enjoy but it has many problems, some of which the original didn't have which makes it a difficult topic to discuss which one is the better of the two. I do hope a 3rd game in the franchise does eventually come out, but I hope it makes multiple improvements that this one lacked.

    - Interesting Pokemon interactions and animations
    - Some really hard puzzles to get rare pokemon / pokemon animations for special photos

    Neutral:
    - The different ways you can find in the map were good but could have been better, sometimes they were to short or not that special
    - The characters were fitting but could have been brought more into the game (especially the kids)
    - Can get boring if you dont like this typ of game and dont find the pokemon/secret youre looking for

    Cons:
    - Price is a little bit too much, 40-50€ would have been more fitting, for people who love this game and want to discover everything the 60€ feel okay, but fore the standard player who just finishes the story and only plays the post game a little bit its too much
    - No Evolutions, correct me if im wrong but I think there are no evolutions in this game which I find kinda sad because they played a big part in the original game and scenes like where you feed a magikarp and it evolves into gyarados would have been amazing
    - The rating/star system is fine, but the stars could have been made better like being able to pick multiple pictures of the same pokemon with different stars ( for each star picture you can choose one) or something in that direction

Overall its a good game but not perfect. A lot of the hate I see here is undeserved, theres either people who knew that this game was a rail photo shoter game, yet still bought it and then cry that you cant move freely or people who just rush it and then say that its too short.

And I was still unsure whether or not i would immediately regret it. "A sefari simulator? I suppose it could be kindafun... But $60??" I never played the OG pokemon snap, I wanted to as a kid but as a responsible adult who has to consider finances and better understands their personal taste... What's the appeal of a few short cinematics?

Let me tell you, I regret nothing. Pokemon snap's appeal is difficult to understand unless you've experienced it. It's more than just wholsome-but-scripted encountets and photography; but it's hard to put to words what's "more" about it. Maybe it scratcges an itch I didnt know I had for a pokemon world that feels alive.

One thing I do know, the game plays like a seies of interactive short-films that evolve the more you watch them. And for some reason that's immensely satisfying

What's more, do not underestimate the empowrering feeling that comes from the "re-snap" feature. Seperate from the photo-editing, this mechanic can take even your most botched photos and give you the tools you need to turn it into something that resembles the work of a professional nature photographer. The renap is very intuitive and allows you to manually perform "touch ups" after the photos are evaluated, but it goes beyond the kind of digital remaster you coukd get IRL, the feature actually lets you revisit the moment the picture was taken and snap a new photo entirely, with much more precision than you got in your first go through. Resnsp can salvage virtuslly any imsge, as long as there was a visible subject within 30 feet of the frame. but why wouldnt there be? there's almost always something going on (whether it be cute strange or outright agressive) no matrter where the camera is pointed. I have spent more time fidling with re-snap than the rest of the game combined. Sure this game is somewhat "niche" and has some limitations, but overall I strongly recomend giving it a try, if you still arent sureif you think it's worth buying, I would suggest you test it out with a borrowed copy, if you can because a milion trailors and reviews could never do this game justice.

It’s a lot of fun to try and get higher scores every single time, but at some point, it does become a little bit tedious, and it’s easier to try and look up online how to get the best score for a specific Pokémon, or how to reach a specific star count to finish up your Photodex, which is a bit of a shame.

I know it's not perfect, and its biggest flaw in my opinion is how repetitive it is, but for my own personal taste it a very relaxing game, at the same time it's rewarding and addictive. The graphics are nice and the premisse is right up my alley. It's not for everybody, but it's definetelly for me. One of the most relaxed pokemon games, my favorite part about this game is the interactions you have with the pokemon. For Example: Throwing an apple at a pokemon making it wake up (and sometimes make them angry). Overall 9/10, but I am going to give it a 10/10 to balance out the bots.

Bandai Namco really pulled through with this spin off. The graphics are gorgeous, the gameplay is super fun, the music is great and the Pokemon have new cries that more fit them. If you bought the old Pokemon Snap, this one is definitely recommended.

The only reason I cant give a perfect score, is the tutorial. It's way too long in New Pokemon Snap. Text box upon text box, when literally all you do is point and press the A button. The game also goes out of it's way to explain to you how photos are scored, when categories like "size" and "centering" and pretty self explanatory.

Brilliant update from the N64 original. The Pokémon are bursting with life and personality, and the graphics are outstanding for the Switch (with rare instances of frame rate drops - looking at you, Wailord!) Quite frankly this is a better-looking, more vibrant and lively Pokémon game than the "flagship" Sword and Shield games. It's absolutely fantastic.

It's amazing. There are a lot of courses with different environments and Pokémon. Like in the original game, you have to use certain tools that you get by advancing in the game, to have the Pokémon strike certain poses or interact with each other. Every level has its own leveling mechanic, which changes the Pokémon and behavior of the Pokémon in it, as you make progress. Some levels also come with a nighttime version of the course or different paths you can chosse to take. While ~200 different Pokémon may feel like a small number in comparison with ~900 Pokémom overall, it's more than enough. Because some of them only appear after you solve a puzzle or progress in the game. And even if you have a full Photodex, there's still many different interactions to photograph to get all four stars of a Pokémon in the dex. To give you an idea how long it takes to finish the dex (not 100% it, just get one picture of every Mon): It took me those 15+ hours playtime and I'm on place 100 in the ranking. That means I was one of the faster people to finish the Photodex, despite the time I took to sleep/cook/work.

Anyone that claims the game only has 6 hours of playtime has not even come close to finishing it. Now I could mention a lot of the other mechanics like the well-thought-out "bossfights" or the picture-editor but that would blast the lenght of this review even further. The only negative aspect, which I think is worth mentioning, is that there aren't any evolutions you can trigger, like in the first game. However, that's the only thing I'd really complain about. TL;DR: Amazing game, lots of content, easily more than 15 hours of playtime. Great successor and 9/10.

PS: To everyone mentioning "This game is bad, you can only take pictures.": Try reading a review, instead of writing one before you buy the game.

Anyway here's a quick honest review from me. The only part that I dislike about this game is how it got the ''switch treatment'' and is being sold as a fully priced game just because Nintendo could, but outside of that, this is an excellent game that is worth getting despite it's price. When they first announced it, I was afraid on how it would be a very short game with maybe 5 hours of gameplay with secrets included, but no, I am many hours in and I feel like I am barely started. So far, every stages I visited have a day and night variant and each of them have many ''levels'' in each variants that upgrades the level adding more pokemons and changing their behaviors, as an example, in the very first level you have pichu and grooky being coutious about you, but the more you progress, the more they will approach you, showing that they grew more confortable with you plus new paths gets unlocked too. Another point that makes it even more replayable is how you get extra missions given to you by the other characters and how every pokemons have a 1, 2, 3 and 4 stars poses with each of them having a bronze to diamond ranking system making you search real hard to find each perfect poses. The only thing I am missing from the original are the real time evolutions, so far i haven't seen any and I don't think there will be any, but with the amount of pokemons having more than tripled with way more replayability on top on an already expanded concept, this game is great and in my most honest opinion, this is a must get despite being ''just an on rail safari shooter'' Expand

It never purported itself to be anything more than a railshooter where you take pics of Pokémon. A lot of the negative reviews seem to be based more on anger over the handling of the main series titles. Whatever. In a nutshell: as a researcher, you travel to various places, interact with wild Pokémon and take photos to document their behavior.
