First of all, yes, you have to have finished Persona 5 to fully enjoy the story. At least to an extend. There’s also the P5 anime if you’re into that. But the story itself is not that hard to understand like these other people made it out to be. It’s not rocket science.

Persona 5 Strikers is a direct sequel to Persona 5 / Persona 5 Royal (Royal being the extended version of P5).

Now that is out of the way, I think they did a great job transforming the classic Persona gameplay into a hack and slash game, yet it still feels tactical. The combo feels precise, and they are different for each character.
The world are amazingly big, both the dungeon and in the real life. At least for a Persona game. The many different kinds of quests, both in and out of dungeon are a nice touch.

Overall, this is a very pleasant surprise. It has no business being this good. I want more people to experience this innovative game. Also, I think it would be great for people to play both Persona 5 and Persona 5 Strikers (one after another) as they are both different that you can play them both back to back without burning out from playing the same kind of gameplay.

How’s the performance on Switch? I think it is totally fine. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The game is awesome, amazing combat and great story, but I just cant recomend to play this game on the switch version. The game goes at 30fps, constant fps drops, lagging and the loading screens take too long. I fully recomend to play the game on the PS4 or PC version.

Who is this talking cat? Who are these characters? Why can they be transported to another dimension? What are they talking about? I'm not saying the game is bad, but I don't even know who these characters are and if it's a good sequel if we don't have the prequel for the game in the Switch.

Who are these characters? Why there is a talking cat? What's going on in the game universe? Who is even my main character?
If there would be a Persona 5 on the Switch before it - maybe then i'd know and enjoy this spin-off.
    For now? Don't bother.

Here's what you need to know before going into this game:

If you haven't played the original Persona 5, this game will be extremely confusing for you. It essentially assumes you played the base P5 and understand the events of that game. If you haven't played P5 (which is presently only on PlayStation systems), you could possibly watch some gameplay videos and/or read a detailed synopsis

If you haven't played the original Persona 5, this game will be extremely confusing for you. It essentially assumes you played the base P5 and understand the events of that game. If you haven't played P5 (which is presently only on PlayStation systems), you could possibly watch some gameplay videos and/or read a detailed synopsis of the game's events before playing -- but you'll still likely find it confusing.

If you're expecting this to be a traditional musou game like the other Warriors spinoffs, discard that expectation right now. It's more a Persona action RPG than a traditional Warriors style game. Fans of the Warriors games, or even just the other spinoffs like Hyrule Warriors, will find some combat similarities but a lot of the combat is heavily modified in order to make the game Persona.

That said, they have done a FANTASTIC job merging the two worlds of Persona's JRPG and Warrior's hack and slash. But like P5, expect long stretches of dialog, cutscenes, and the inability to save.

If I were reviewing this on Playstation, I'd easily give this a 9. But on Switch, I'm forced to drop it a few points due to the graphical issues that crop up. It's clear that the Switch struggles to keep up when there are a lot of shadows to fight with a lot of health bars and player particle effects. Frame rates drop significantly in these scenarios. But the thing that I find most bothersome is the absolute lack of any form of anti-aliasing. When docked on a 1080p display, the jaggies are beyond awful. To give one example: Early in the game, Joker, Ann, and Morgana are talking in a hallway. The camera tends to do a light sway back-and-forth, just as it did during similar cutscenes in P5. The jaggies around each doorframe in the hallway are so bad that it almost gave me motion sickness as they oscillated back and forth. The jaggies are less evident in handheld mode (or docked on a 720p display), but they're still there. This issue is most problematic with regard to cutscenes -- but since cutscenes easily make up half of the game (maybe more), this is a constant problem.

All in all, it's a great game for Persona 5 fans and does a great job bringing us back to the world of the Phantom Thieves. If you don't have a Playstation, this is still quite playable so long as you can deal with frame drops and lackluster graphics on 1080p or beyond displays.

I am reviewing this game as someone who has finished both prior P5 games

This game is quite flawed, but at the same time it is a perfect sequel to the original P5 in terms of its story and what this game is. Firstly I do not recommend this game to people who did not finish the original Persona 5 (Not Royal) or who are just looking for a new Musou Title that they can just dive into.

They advertise this game as a standalone experience and as it's own thing, but there are sooooo many references to the original story of P5, and the story beats are much more satisfying knowing the context behind the original.

Next I love the direction this game went, in terms of how to continue the story. A summer vacation traveling around Japan was the perfect choice to continue the Phantom thieves stories, and I though the summer events of P5 felt like they were rushed, so to see a lot of those summer events come into play, but more focused this time around, the experience is really cool. I will say I am a bit disappointed they don't go as all in as I would like though sometimes, because the game constantly cuts to black for scenes I would like to see animated.

In terms of gameplay, this game feels like a mix of Kingdom Hearts and your typical Musou Fair, but with the persona series' weakness and persona system. The game can take some real getting used to, but ultimately it isn't that deep. The combat itself is pretty low mind energy fun, but can get very repetitive due to the long length of this games Jails(Dungeons) , (Which the Jails themselves are really repetitive as well). Despite the repetition, I think the switch to hack and slash was cool, I just wished it were more polished, The lock on system is really Wonky, Bosses can feel very padded sometimes (especially Lock Keepers, They are honestly the most boring fights in the game), Also I like the vertical mobility in this game via climbing, jumping and double jumping,

And the Games Soundtrack? do you even need me to say it? It's freakin great! There are some songs that I would say are better than some of the OG P5's songs.(That Sendai and Sapporo town theme is 10/10).

If you played the original P5, a thing I am mixed on, is the way persona creation is handled. I miss the confidant system but for this game it makes a lotttt of sense why it isn't there. I actually like the mroe streamlined approach to fusing persona's and think it works with this game really well. I just miss those Arcana Boosts!!!

I definitely really enjoy this game and will see myself playing it again in succession with the first P5 when I play it through again.

Enjoyable OST, very cool to look at the Artbook too and the behind the scenes stuff is also fun to check out. Oh and if you have SSBU on your Switch, you get P5 and P5R music sets as a nice little bonus as well as a Sophia Spirit in SSBU that was exclusive at the time. (Missed chance for Amiibo support though.)

Now to the actual game. Now, I have played Warriors games before, but this one instantly felt many times better than those. Better flow of story, not confined to menus like 99% of the time and whatnot. So that felt like a breath of fresh air after all the menu selections before battle in games such as Hyrule Warriors (Legends and Age of Calamity, in my case) and Fire Emblem Warriors.

Also, this game is a good one to learn the art of Fusion a bit better and how it works as it simplifies the process. With no days passing unless you continue the story the game also feels less pressured as you can't 'waste' days by accident.

But the game is not without its flaws.

Loading Times: If you only play the Switch version you might know about it but not look at it that much, but the Loading Times are horrible. Where my Gaming Laptop takes 5 seconds to load, that same area takes +20 to load on Switch. Of course the two devices are barely comparable in power, but in games like this that means that you will probably be powering your way through to checkpoints just to evade more loading screens. While you'll be taking it more easy if loading isn't an issue.

Framerate: I have no issue with the framerate, at all. 30FPS is fine with me, especially with how much the game already needs to compromise at some parts. I haven't really noticed many frame drops from what I can remember, perhaps the Final Boss but overall it seems more stable than Age of Calamity (Which pretty much froze on me once.)

Graphically: The only things that really stand out to me in the Switch version after playing the PC version afterward, is that some textures are widely different, and some subtle details are not even around in the Switch version. But this is, as I said, subtle so it's not a issue gameplay wise, and only really noticable if you play another version side-by-side. I'm even surprised that aside from that, the versions look pretty even.

The Story: It goes down the idea that people can change when they are 'Trapped by their traumas', which this game takes to a literal level. How good you find the story to be tends to be based on how well you can relate to it really. I found it perfect, an eye-opener in fact for example. Oh, and I do recommend to check out some story details for the original Persona 5, there aren't many references, but there may be a few that are good to know.

Side rant: No achievements destroys any reason to really go for 100% on Switch other than person bragging rights. Although this is more on Nintendo's part than an issue of the game itself. Oh and Screenshots have, just like Age of Calamity, a watermark added that always overlaps with the UI. Why precisely? Screenshots through steam don't have this, so why does Switch?

All in all, giving it a 9. The story is perfect to me and pretty much worth a 10 on its own but the lack of replay value and a rather lackluster post-game just misses that 10 mark for me. Despite the game having been a life changer, I can see that this won't be the case for everyone.

It's more involved than a typical musou game, and the storylines are definitely deeper. The travelogue commentary during certain scenes can be pretty tedious.

P5S is starting to come down in price, and while its pricetag wasn't a deal breaker by any means, being able to pick it up for £15 (or more) less than RRP is always nice :)

Does this game mean that P5 might make an appearance on the Switch? Maybe, but I doubt it. I was honestly surprised that P5S wasn't a PS4 exlusive, given that Atlus seems to be focusing on the SMT mainline for the Switch. Plus, so many graphics whores would rant over how it doesn't look exactly the same as the PS4 version. THat would get old fast lol. "It's a less powerful machine, but why doesn't P5 look exactly the same as it does on that more powerful machine? Wah! Wah!"

Anyway, if you like P5 or you like musou games or you like action RPGs, maybe give this a go.

Persona 5 Strikers is not a typical spin off; it is a full-fledged sequel filled with real characters, a gripping story, and an addicting gameplay loop. And though it is a different genre than its antecedent, the love and personality poured into this game puts it on par with the best follow ups I’ve ever played. Since Atlus creates a new set of heroes for every mainline Persona entry, this could be the last time we see Joker. I hope not. Persona 5 Strikers made me relive my love for Persona 5 and the Phantom Thieves, and I never want to see them go.
