Just in case I haven’t made it clear enough, Souldiers is absolutely a modern-day classic. It’s also in the running for my favorite game of 2022—it’s really just that good. Between its engaging level design, gorgeous visual appearance, addictive combat mechanics, and its class-based system giving it three times the replaybility… you really owe it to yourself to get this game if you consider yourself a Metroidvania fan.

Souldiers is one of the best modern metroidvanias and can stand up to any of the genre's favourites. Not only does it have great gameplay and spectacular visuals, but it is truly huge and detailed from start to finish.

Demanding without ever being totally off-putting or daunting, Souldiers is highly recommended for all fans of pixel art metroidvania platform action games. Its deliciously retro artistic direction is far from being the only one of its qualities since the game also knows how to renew itself intelligently by offering no less than 3 radically distinct character classes and gigantic maps full of secrets.

Souldiers is a 2D metroidvania with Souls-like touches that stands out for its fluid, challenging and deep gameplay. A stimulating experience with a great artistic value which is only weighed down by various technical problems that promise to be corrected sometime in the future.

Souldiers is one of those games that’s disappointing simply because a small number of critical issues hold it back from the greatness it comes so close to achieving. A large world to explore, tough combat system, and an outstanding art style are weighed down by ridiculous load times and poor difficulty balancing. It’s a real testament to the game’s strengths that we’d still give it a recommendation, though perhaps with the caveat that you may want to try it on another platform than Switch, if possible — we really hope that further patches can iron out the issues. At any rate, we’d say Souldiers is certainly worth your time, but maybe this isn’t one to rush out and buy right away.

There isn’t much that sets Souldiers apart from other Metroidvanias. A big map to explore, secrets to discover, and plenty of upgrades. But limiting players to one of three unique classes does not make me want to play Souldiers all over again a second, let alone, third time. Dying is a struggle, and loading back in after a minute to die all over again is not rewarding. Puzzles that frustrated me to no end were common enough to keep me away. Souldiers will only appeal to those who are gluttons for punishment with little reward.

Souldiers is a metroidvania with potential. It has a good story and very creative enemies, but the constant technical problems greatly hinder the game experience.

It has had some bugs and had some slow loading times but keeps getting better and better with each patch. I'm over half way through my first play through and plan to play again with the other two classes. The developers also did a surprisingly good job telling a story for the genre Expand

I've spent hours just in the first zone alone. All afternoon and late into the evening. The only real problem here is frame rate drops. I'm talking just walking past a save point will drop the fps to almost 0 and stall like it's going to crash. Load times are pretty bad and often hang up. Also just walking into some rooms with lots of boxes and torches drops the fps pretty low and makes moving around and doing things hard. Also for instance the first boss fight had a background animation and the boss lunges about the same time. The fps drops pretty low. All in all I've been waiting on this game and was pretty excited. These are the only things I really find wrong with it.

Gameplay wise it is solid. The platforming is great. The backgrounds, character movesets, animations, it all blends together very nicely and the art style is like a really improved ps1 game. I'm loving the game and even with the issues I haven't found anything game breaking. Again the fps drops tend to take away from the overall experience and it's fluidness, transitions and what not. This can wear on some people and I don't blame them. I just happen to like it and enjoy it enough that I can look past it a bit.

Definitely worth a play. I've sat down and played this consecutively and with more enjoyment than most triple A games on the market or even games available. The system works well and the combat is good. I don't feel like it's a big chore or things are too tedious as say breath of the wild or assassin's Creed. This was just the game I was looking for. So I'm pretty happy.

I would stay away if fps drops and long load times genuinely make you upset or are a glaring flaw you can't look past, because there's alot of that here. It'd be a 10/10 if it wasnt for that.

Story and sound are also pretty good.

The soundtrack is soothing and really excels in setting the mood. And the "16-bit" graphics are stunning but I would argue that "32-bit" would be a more accurate descriptor.

Retro Forge has come out swinging with what has great potential to be a flagship franchise. I truly hope to see this game succeed and receive more content or even a follow-up game in the not so distant future.

But please don't buy it on switch, if you can get in other plataform! The game glitches a lot, it have gigantic load screen, fps drops, I already get locked and had to restart the game 3 times and my game already fully crashed 2 times. I'm only 15 hours into the game and already experienced all those bugs! I would refund it if I could for sure, it's almost unplayable, for real, play that game, but avoid the switch version at all costs. Expand

This is my Review lifted str8 from Steam

UPDATE June 24: The Cock-gobbling Mods on steam have banned me from the forums for calling out sissy 'My little Pony' avatar using butt-pirates for making the devs cave. Mods are more concerned about some peoples feelings than actual criticisms and discussions. Words are just words you pu$$ies, you'll survive, they can't hurt you, despite what public schools have taught you.

June 23 EDIT: The Devs have caved since launch and implemented knee-jerk patch that nerfs and VASTLY changes the game. WAY to easy to play now, it's made for Smooth-brains now, it's not anything like it was. Cry-baby millenials ruin yet another decent game because they don't know how to dodge, jump, roll and attack at the right times. Sad.

EVERY NEG REVIEW ABOUT LOSING SAVES ARE MADE BY MOUTH-BREATHING-SMOOTH-BRAINS!

This game is awesome. An excellent 'Vania with a nice fantasy setting.
Music is excellent and the challenge is real, but not too punishing.
If they played a video-game before they would have realized there ARE SAVE POINTS, the save points even refill your health.

FFS all these kids crying about how hard this game is and losing save data are the reason they make 'Story Modes' in games a thing now, because they're all too dumb to read, the game tells you how to save, you just have to be paying attention, this is 'Cuphead' rage all over again.
