Souldiers is a must-play title for anyone who loves Metroidvania-style games with RPG and platforming elements thrown in. Despite a few hiccups at launch, v1.1.1 addresses all the issues, making this gorgeous-looking and -sounding game one you shouldn’t miss!
Souldiers may be too challenging for some players, but if you are not scared of demanding combat challenges or of being stuck not knowing how to progress, then this is a gem for retro, metroidvania and pixel-art fans.
The name is deceptive, as this is more skin to a traditional Metroidvania than to a souls-like. Huge, ability-gated environments. Rich pixel art. This deserves way more credit in the Metroidvania pantheon, but is unfortunately plagued by its reputation for slowdown.
If you are a true believer in the genre, give this a try. Well worth the pricetag even if you play half.
When it comes to the core game, Souldiers brings all its terrific mechanics and clever level design together for a lengthy experience that gets you engaged in its gameplay and platforming rather than its story.
Souldiers is a solid game, clearly made with care and passion, but this is not always enough. This metroidvania struggles to impress the player in any of its components, whether artistic, narrative, or design. The class differences are nice, but we don't think many will want to replay the entire adventure to see how the unchosen classes change the style.
Souldiers certainly won't be to everyone's taste, due to its lackluster plot and technical hiccups, but it's definitely one to check out if you are into Metroidvania or Souls-like games.
A well executed and impressively detailed mix of Metroidvania exploration, Soulslike combat, and role-playing style customisation that’s marred only by its demanding controls.
Souldiers was "this close" to join the not so closed club of the great indie metroidvania, only its absurd difficulty and its finally very flat gameplay got the better of the pleasure of the game quite quickly. It's a pity, because Retro Forge's title is full of very good ideas and, damn it, it's got a lot of good looks: apart from some dubious color choices on some shots, Souldiers can at least boast of a 2D of an almost unprecedented finesse. To make it short: it's very beautiful, but really average.
PROS
-Great gameplay, fun with the capital F
-enemies are tenacious, they wont leave you alove
-enjoyable music but never memorable
-beautiful pixel art
-lot of things to do and secrets to find
-it last a lot for a metroidvania
-finally a metroidvania that doesnt rely its story on lore and abstract things
CONS
-messy and unfinished story (I guess it will continue in the sequel)
-except for the first 3 areas, to easy after the patch expecialy the bosses (choose hard mode or you will have 0 challenge)
-not buggy but had a single one that made me restart a completed mission, was very annoying
(Laggy, awfull loading times, frame issues)vania. Stay away. Its release was as messy as its so called 1.1 patch that fixed ''everything''. Nothing is fixed up to this date. It is only easier
I was in love with this game before it even came out and I loved the intro. However it seems FPS issues got even worse the more patches that came out the worse the FPS issues were. Really sad because it was such a great game at its core. Some of the boss fights needed tightening up like the sand crab and sand crystals. Man. Literally the more they patched it the worse it got. Really awful it happened to this game of all games. It was a real gem. Beautiful.
