Oh, excuse me, it seems my system is no longer up-to-date – [old memory status deleted] – so, much better… WELCOME to the Spacebase Startopia! I'm VAL, your helpful and efficient Space Station AI! According to my records, this Station hasn’t been used at all in the last 17 years! How very strange. Furthermore, it would appear that you are the only rational life form in this Sector. Well then, CONGRATULATIONS! I hereby officially pronounce you Commander of this Space Station! Hopefully you will enjoy more success than your predecessor who, according to the logbook, er… ran into some wormlike Aliens… Oh, nothing to worry about! To keep the same thing from happening to you, there's a lot you're going to have to do. Amongst others, there’s the development of further Sectors, maintenance of the three vital Main Decks as well as the customer acquisition and entertainment of our extraterrestrial visitors, who provide us with sufficient Energy for our plans for global improvement. Oh, and before I forget – it's probably just a bug in my security protocols anyway – but my sensors are showing just loads of enemy creatures in all of the other Sectors… So, what are we waiting for? Let's get to work! Let us join forces to conquer space." SPACEBASE STARTOPIA captivates with its original mixture of economic simulation and empire building strategy paired with classic RTS skirmishes and a good dose of humor. In addition to the challenging single player Campaign and the versatile battle mode, there are also competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes for up to four players. And as if maintaining the three Space Station Decks, entertaining the eight Alien races and defending against enemy invaders were not enough of a challenge, the dynamic narrator AI is not going to mince matters and commentates the events in a lovely but sharp-tongued manner. Starbase Startopia is a fun little alien management game. If you're after a new management sim, it could be an excellent comfort game. For newcomers to management games, Starbase is a little too alienating, but if you're just curious how it runs, it runs alright.

Fans of the original Startopia may miss some concepts that aren't here, but Spacebase is a breath of fresh air for new players who can find a taste for the sim genre in this title. Whoever is able to see over the poor performance on Nintendo Switch will find an entertaining title to spend a good number of hours on.

The basic gameplay loop is really simple and relies a lot on the mindless busywork, like building the same buildings in exactly the same order in every mission, or manually picking up trash. [Issue#256, p.49]

Controls can be a little clunky at times, and the RTS side of things are frustratingly unfun; however, for those who want a light natured management sim that stands out from the normal city or theme park builder, you may just find what you are looking for here. With a little initial patience, you should be able to get a hang of things quickly and find plenty to keep you entertained for countless hours."

While you can see the effort to try to make SS approachable, humorous, and perhaps at least a little challenging with its multiple levels and unique concepts, unfortunately it’s plagued by more troubles than it has successes. Without a doubt the killer issues are the clumsy and cumbersome controls and the interface scheme that I have no doubt worked reasonably well on PC but have not been given the proper attention and care being converted over to a console experience. While it’s undoubtedly not an easy nut to crack, the fact is there are other conversions in the space already on the eShop that don’t just do it better, but do it better to an enormous degree. Beyond that it also just feels like the experience is lacking in distinctive personality, something its competition (not to name names but specifically Two Point Hospital and Rollercoaster Tycoon 3) gets far more right. The result is a bit frustrating. Perhaps engaging play could have compensated for lacking controls or vice versa, but in this case unless you’re really starved for something just a little different there are better options out there to consider.
