Fun game. Some needed changes, some unneeded and mostly superficial alterations.

Online disconnects as much as always, even on wired connection. But still better than Mario Kart online.

    That being said…

Pro tip: practice pressing A; you’ll be doing it a lot

My review score for this game currently stands as a 5, as I view this as "half a game" in its current state. I quickly found myself playing this game once or twice every week ever since its first week and a half after release, even being hyped following the news of the game leading up to launch, and knowing the shallow content pool of past entries with all of that in mind. Now, you could say I'm not being that fair since the game is only a few weeks in, and has a plethora of updates of content to come spanning a whole two years, but some of the things I mentioned I feel should've been a little more elaborate or expansive at launch, and this is only going to become a bigger point of emphasis as the weeks go by empty of new substance. I very well may be proven wrong here, and could take this review off the board seeing as to how well this feedback from present day into the future ages. But as is, this is a pool of cephalopods swimming in rather shallow waters. Expand

unlike what people think, it's not childish, the marketing is and it sucks.

If you must play online, expect multiple disconnections and communication errors (which you will then be punished for with a temporary ban or a rank demotion). I could not in good conscience recommend the game to anyone, even though it is one of my favourite franchises in the Nintendo stable. I really like Splatoon 2 but after playing 3 for a week, it feels like a cash grab that doesn't deserve to be its own game. No new game modes except Tri Colour turf war which was supposed to be playable during Splatfest, but seemed to be inaccessible for near enough everyone thanks to the atrocious online service. Online stability is still just as bad as it was in Splatoon 2, which is especially annoying when Nintendo makes you pay to play online. Expand

Many aspects of the game feel like they have been reduced in quality, especially from Splatoon 2, and it has made it difficult for me to understand why this was a new release. While I do think the new movement options have added a healthy amount of new depth to the game, I think its important to address the horrendous balance in the game right now, specifically with the obvious bias towards shooter weapons: as of the time of writing, there are a total of 19 standard shooter kits in the game, compared to the umbrellas and brushes which each have only 3 kits each, and the splatanas and bows only having 2 kits each. This has left the game in an abhorently unhealthy state, and means most players are using the same class, leading to most matches just feeling the same. Expand

I in no sense hate this game, and I think anyone can have fun playing it. That being said...this game can get incredibly frustrating for older teens/adults who care about their results, especially in Salmon Run where you have a rank to lose.
This game needs a better matchmaking system, period. I don't play turf and ranked typically (because of the horrible netcode this game has, if you dont have good internet dont even bother) but I am a huge fan of salmon run. I've been at the max rank before, and when your team knows how to play, it's incredibly chaotic and just pure fun. But all that hinges on your team KNOWING how to play. If you get one bad teammate- thats it, you're done... and YOU get punished for it! It is so easy to lose your rank or, if you are lucky, to be carried into a rank higher than what your skill level is at.
Skillful players get knocked down so easily and it.. is literally near impossible to get back up. It's ridiculous. Nintendo needs to make it harder to go up and harder to go down, I've never played a multiplayer game where the ranks just don't matter and you can be paired with anyone. Salmon run becomes, ironically, 10x harder when you factor in players who do not know what they're doing in lower, easier ranks. All the joys of teamwork get utterly sucked away and you're just left with just feeling like you wasted your time because your teammates ran to the shore, stayed there, constantly getting themselves killed and not focusing on the objective... and theres nothing you can do about it. Oh, but that's your fault, clearly you (the person with the best score) must not know how to play... let's dock your pay grade by 5,000 points.
So if you just want to have a good time and play, this game is perfect for that. But if you even get slightly serious about what you're doing, you're just going to be utterly disappointed.

(.... oh yeah and the regular maps for turf and all that aren't good or fun, they're very cramped! Not ideal in a game who's design philosophy ISN'T supposed to be rooted in just getting enough kills, like every other shooter, but rather how much of the ground you can ink. It really feels like they went back on this, and this game is now more than ever filled to the brim with tryhards. It doesn't feel as welcoming and warm as Splatoon 2 did for me)

Lo cual hubiera presentado un juego mas robusto y justificado su valor de USD 60.

The biggest issue for me lies in the way the game matches you against other players, there's no MMR or other form of matchmaking system at all; some matches are just unwinnable, it doesn't matter what rank you're in, you'll get matched with and against all kind of players. Splatoon 3 doesn't take into account what weapons the players are using, which sometimes results in a team composed of 4 chargers (sniper rifles) matched against a balanced team with a good mix of long and short range weapons, making the match completely one-sided.

Splatoon 3 is NOT a casual videogame, If you're thinking about buying this for your kids I'll let you know it is not for everyone. Splatoon 3 is an extremely sweaty third-person shooter with a huge learning curve, meaning new players will lose A LOT trying to learn the mechanics of the game.

Losing feels awful, if you're unlucky enough to end up in an uneven match you'll either completely aniihilate the opposing team or get brutally stomped with the rest of your teammates and even though it is no longer possible to get spawn killed in this game, compared to its predecessor, you still won't be able to do much when losing. If you're in the losing team you basically don't get to play the game and it feels incredibly frustrating. Turf war matches only last 3 minutes, and yet it is still possible to die over 10 times in a single match or get over 20 kills, simply because maps are really small and you're pretty much forced to confront your opponent.
Almost every single map in the game is terribly designed, the maps feel too small with not enough space to maneuver around, meaning flanking enemy players is really hard.

The game is hopelessly unbalanced. There are over 50 weapons so it only makes sense that some of them are considered useless, not to mention every weapon in the game has a predetermined kit that you cannot change, so even if you find a main weapon that you like you might not like the special weapon or the sub weapon it comes with.

Splatoon 3 also has some really bad connection issues, I suggest not to buy this game if you don't have a stable internet connection. Although I didn't experience this myself, I heard many players complain that they're getting disconnected in the middle of a match as a result of those issues.

Now, not everything about the game is terrible; the single-player campaign is fairly decent and the co-op pve horde mode (Salmon Run) can actually be fun, even if hard at times.

I felt like I HAD to leave a bad review of this game, just to warn others about what they might experience playing Splatoon 3. Hopefully it has been helpful for somebody to read this review.

How is it possible that Nintendo has had 3 attempts at fixing the problems in Spatoon and they still can't? In fact, some of the problems like online play are worse. HOW? Almost the entire game is centred around online play and they can't even do that. This game is a joke. This game is a total waste of money. Waste of money making and a waste of money buying it.

Look at some of these critic reviews. Absolute garbage shills. Seriously. Blows Splatoon 2 out of the water some said. It is basically a worse version of Spatoon 2 in many ways. And they could have made a paint pun instead, but they are too stupid to manage that!

Matchmaking is still garbage. Connection issues are worse now. Lockers are garbage cause your friends are not the ones near yours, just random peoples...who cares then?! Half the maps are still garbage. Oh, and there are fewer of them as well. Ranked modes are still garbage, nothing new.

You are still forced to play the maps Nintendo wants you too. So you can log in and see the levels and modes are garbage and just immediately turn the game back off. Great design Nintendo. Real winners. How are you so stupid? Like how? How is it possible for game designers to be this idiotic?

SAVE YOUR MONEY UNTIL THEY ACTUALLY MAKE A NEW GAME AND FIX THIS GARBAGE!

In one 90 minute session today, I counted 27 generic comms errors: 22 during matchmaking, 5 mid-match. None of this was a problem with my network as discord chat and my wife's TV video streaming worked flawlessly throughout the same time period. Yet twice Nintendo's system blamed MY internet, penalizing me with two 5 minute "time-outs" despite the comm errors being THEIR fault. I only managed to play 6 complete games in the time frame, totaling around 30 minutes. 30 minutes of play vs. 90 minutes of comm errors. I'm not reducing my score (yet) but if they don't get a handle on this I most certainly will. It doesn't matter how good the game could be if it can't be played.
    ---
    Original:
Splatoon 1 and 2 were my most played games on the Wii U and Switch, respectively, so what I'm about to write legimiately hurts: Splatoon 3 is, in many respects, inferior to Splatoon 2. Fewer maps, fewer weapons, fewer weapon loadouts meaning less weapon diversity, and only the barest minimum of truly new things added. Out of 12 multiplayer maps at launch, only 5 of them are new -- the other 7 are returning maps from Splatoon 1 and 2. The only new primary weapons added are the bows and the Splatana. There's a handful of new special abilities but most of them are just cosmetic retreads of secondary abilities from the previous two games. The new campaign is nice, but predictable to anyone who played the previous campaigns. Same puzzles -- hell, the same cube boss appears YET AGAIN. I know people will say it's not fair to expect a new game to have as much content as the previous game that was supported for 5 years and I agree to a point; However, I expect a sequel to at least have more content than the LAUNCH version of its predecessor. Other than the addition of cosmetics, this offers less at launch than Splatoon 2 did in 2017.

But the biggest thing that drives my score down is the fact that the entire multiplayer system is just as bad as it's always been. When you start the game it asks you to set your region, but this is ONLY for future Splatfests. Regular gameplay is worldwide matchmaking like always, which means the game suffers the same problem as the last two where getting connected to people halfway around the world makes for very unenjoyable matches due to ping/latency. It has the same horridly low tick rate as Splatoon 2 so being killed around corners or seemingly "through" textures happens just as frequently as the last game. Connection errors are as prevalent as always and if someone disconnects, it ends the match for everyone -- even if it's all the way at the end of the match. I've been sitting at the "GAME!" (or salmon egg counter) screen at the end of a match only for it to error out and give no rewards for the time spent. Three games into this series and one would think they would have made a real effort to address these issues... alas, no.

There are some very good/much needed quality of life additions here like the ability to group with friends easier, the addition of a shooting range in the lobby room, the ability to skip the Deep Cut intro video, the Sheldon Licenses making acquiring weapons easier, and the locker room. But many of these could have been added to the previous game in a massive overhaul rather than requiring a full, entire, new game.

I still love Splatoon and I'm sure I'll be playing this for years to come -- but that doesn't change the fact that, in terms of content, Splatoon 2 is the superior game right now, especially since 3 suffers the same networking problems as 2. In a year or two, Splatoon 3 will probably be on par with the content in Splatoon 2... it's just a shame it didn't launch with more out of the gate (or better netcode, at least).

Salmon Run is the stupidest game design ever made, to get the needed fish scales you need to fight the boss in the extra 4th phase that only happens once in a while, so you'll get levels and upgrade your Salmon Run rank before you can even reach the boss, thing is this is increasing the difficulty of the game like crazy, so the time you reach the boss the game will be way too hard and the only way for you to get scales would be to lose every game as fast as possible until your rank is lowered to the minimum for the game difficulty to be playable and fun again.

Story mode is barely ok, some stages are stupidly easy, other ones are stupidly hard, or you get killed or fall in a trap right before the end of the stage.

Game designer behind this must be fired and never hired again for this job,
when you can't make a balanced difficulty, can't scale battles with players of the same level, and have fun creating frustrating traps and bad stages, you're not good for this job.

A good game is suposed to be fun, not punishing the player for being new in battle mode, for reaching the end of a stage in story mode, and for leveling up in co-op mode.

Splatoon 3 feels like a fast game with bad game design made only for taking money because the other preceding games worked.

Decent enough game. Once the novelty of Splatoon 3 being a new installment in the series rubs off, it really just feels like more of the same. Some nice QOL upgrades move this from a 4-5 to a 6 for me. Playing with friends is much easier and Clam Blitz doesn't dominate rotations (although there are rotations still, unfortunately) scored at a 6 because honestly, I'm bored already. Will update when Devs update the game.

Nintendo is still terrible at net-code. It is fine until the higher levels, and then you can't play because everyone is lagging and not taking damage. Splatoon 2 had this problem too.

Edit: Just wanted to add that you need to win 3 games to rank up, but the game disconnects constantly and counts it as a loss, even if you're in the lead. I can't rank up because of this. Edit 2:

I wrote an entire 3000 character review and Metacritic's engine keeps 404ing whenever I try to post it. The game is balanced poorly, has rarely functioning netcode, awful controls, and refuses to adapt or implement any modern philosophies of game design, leading to an overall poor game experience. I just rage-quit it the 20th time. No, not during a session, I am not that kind of impolite person.

I am over 40 and do not have eagle-like hand-eye coordination. And I enjoy FPS games, but am not particularly good at them. For people like me, coming into the game fresh is a complete desaster. Sure I can play the single player for a couple of hours, but hopping into online sessions is the core aspect of the game. And there ARE levels, which you have to climb up to get better weapons and armor, so it is needless to say that playing against much higher level players is unfair from a pure technical point, adding up the experience and skills people have from playing competitive shooters for years and maybe even have a more "gifted" advantage. I would never dare to suggest excluding highly-skilled competitive players with a very serious approach from the game, but hell, there must be some kind of safe space for noobs and casuals.

Sure, there is supposed to be "matchmaking" AI to put you into sessions with equally skilled players, but tbo ... it sucks and feels non-existent. Nintendo could also just say there is matchmaking in their proprietary code and there actually isn't, and it would be the same outcome.

Has a family-friendly, all-including company like Nintendo never ever considered a "league" system, like we have in many real life sports? A C-league for the kids, mommies and daddies and alike to just enjoy a sport locally in a team against other small villages? A B-league for the more ambitious to be picked out of C-league when you show talent and would be under-challenged in C? And the major A league for the pros and hard achievers?

No, they didn't. So, in conclusion, the game is being taken over by elitists who gate-keep the whole game. It has become completely inaccessible for kids, casuals and therefore 80% of Nintendo's customers. Good job. Not.

God, i'm just so furious right now. If the game hadn't been expensive, I would have filmed myself burning the cartridge and posted it everywhere as a meme.

Gaming is more popular and profitable than ever, but the publishers, even Nintendo, haven't changed their mindsets how to make games FOR that new audience. Guess I have to play Animal Crossing for the rest of my life.

The multiplayer lacks variety due to extremely linear maps that all look, feel and play the exact same and shallow gameplay that doesn't put any emphasis on teamwork, tactics or strategy. I guess that explains the name of this game too, cause this is the third time Nintendo has put out the same game where you do nothing more than meaninglessly splat some paint around but this time with even less vision, ambition or motivation than the previous games.

This means they are organised and are talking to each other about strategy. I must have lost 30 matches in a row despite being quite good at Splatoon 2. It's aim is always off, so I always have to get really close to something if I want to shoot it. Hell, the aiming in general is bad here. Finally, and this is the biggest issue, I need Online for EVERYTHING, even buying clothes. If anything, this game should've had an Offline option to it, but no. Not even Ninjala has this garbage issue, especially since I've heard that Splatoon's connections are **** Yes. Ninjala, as bad as it is, is at least TRYING to get better every season, as most games should. That alone is an embarrassment to Splatoon. Nintendo should've delayed this game while they still could, because this is unacceptable. Expand

For a first time player in the splatoon series, this game is really addicting and fleshed out, def worth a try if you havent played the previous games.

This was practically my first Splatoon experience. I never played the original Wii U Splatoon and had only played a very limited amount of Splatoon 2. The story mode is fine, it’s about what you would expect. The core game itself is also just good. It’s not a must buy Nintendo Switch game but it is worth checking out if you have either never played Splatoon before or are a long time fan.

It's the same game. If you liked Splatoon 2 you'll know exactly what to expect.

Critically broken online play due to bad connectivity and and matchmaking. Matches are rarely balanced, and almost half end due to connection problems of one or more of the players. These issues render the game virtually unplayable.

First time I though it was gonna be the same Splatoon formula, but then, they put a lot of love in this Splatoon game, with new modules in Multiplayer, and a great campaign with another different story and a upgrade system like the RPG games

This game is a huge steaming pile of garbage. The greedy developers copied and pasted the majority of the maps from the past Splatoons, and they had the audacity to charge $60 for reused content. When I pay $60, I expect most of the maps to be new with top notch AAA quality.

The gameplay is the exact same trash as Splatoon 2. The graphics are a joke and looks the same as Splatoon 2. It's almost as if the lazy developers got Splatoon 2 and slapped the number 3 on the cover. The physics are beyond horrible. This game is broken because I was stuck in a black screen. The campaign is awful with boring boss fights. The story is stupid and worthless. The missions are boring and repetitive. The soundtrack is terrible. The puzzles are laughable. These annoying creatures make too many cringeworthy noises, to the point where I almost wanted to slam my TV against the floor if I heard their voices again.

The online multiplayer is complete garbage with all these connection issues and awful map designs. There isn't even any split screen. This is clearly the developer's pathetic attempt at making players buy more Switchs for local play. The inkling kid with the yellow "hair" has a cringeworthy face on the cover of this game. This made me remove the cover paper off the game case and rip it into pieces. I don't recommend this game at all, unless you want to support laziness.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Regarding hero mode, I wanted a difficulty level selection. If you are a beginner or an unskilled person, you will feel difficult, so it is a pity. In particular, I think that the boss battle will be difficult to defeat from the first half. Expand

Best Splatoon so far and a proof that a gaming company can release a FULL Complete package and not a work in progress like so many ‘shooter games’ released these days. It’s a multiplayer masterpiece, has an excellent single player story campaign, a cool Splatoon x Tetris sub-game and that Salmon Run mode is better than ever. 10/10.

Such a good game! Best in the series so far. I'm still beating the story mode, and it's a ton of fun!

Splatoon 3 takes everything the previous games did and makes it better in pretty much every conceivable way. More fluid, more dynamic, with a more balanced gameplay and a very welcome enlarged one-player dimension, Splatoon 3 is all that could be expected from the third chapter in the series, where the improvements fit neatly with the Splatoon legacy.

Splatoon 3 went live in September, and ever since it launched I've had to will myself to stay away from it. I'm a grown man with a family! I've got a lot of responsibilities! So why do I keep feeling compelled to stay up into the wee hours of the morning shooting virtual ink at strangers? [Issue #62 – November/December 2022, p. 74]

A shooting game, but kid-friendly and, above all, rock-solid. Those last two adjectives have been Nintendo's USP since the late 1980s, and Splatoon 3 is brimming with that DNA. A breath of fresh air for those tired of the Call of duty's and Overwatches of this world for a while.
