  • Summary: SUPERHOT is the first person shooter where time moves only when you move. No regenerating health bars. No conveniently placed ammo drops. It's just you, outnumbered and outgunned, grabbing the weapons of fallen enemies to shoot, slice, and maneuver through a hurricane of slow-motion bullets.

When I reflect fondly on my previously-mentioned SUPERHOT VR experience, I think about looking fully around the environment, physically ducking to avoid bullets, and even using a throwing motion to launch objects across the room. While that version was exhausting and exhilarating, SUPERHOT on Switch feels like an ideal complement with its encapsulated, portable, and original take on the adventure. For players who are looking to jump into the world of SUPERHOT for the first time, Nintendo Switch feels like the right place to get shooting and moving.

Overall, Superhot on Nintendo Switch is a great way to experience one of the better and more unique games of recent years. If you’ve already played it before, it isn’t worth buying again but newcomers should absolutely consider this version as an option to play Superhot. It even has a nice icon and I know that matters to many people for Nintendo Switch games.

Superhot offers a first-person shooter experience unlike any other, and although the main campaign is a little bit on the short side, once you’ve made it through you’ll have dozens of new ways to replay it should you wish. We’re not entirely sure why this particular phrase comes to mind, but Superhot is the most innovative shooter we’ve played in years.

Superhot is a wild ride. It’s exhilarating when, against all odds, you shatter every combatant into pieces and make it through a stage unscathed. While the game’s length is disappointing and its gyroscope controls are hard to perfect, it’s such a fresh idea that it’s hard not to recommend. Give it a download even if you’re not into the FPS genre. Above all, Superhot is a title that is about quick thinking and adapting to any situation, even when it goes south.

I first played superhot on PC and thought it was well worth the 9 bucks i got it for on steam. I didn't expect much other than a bullet time shooter, however the story, and the unlocked modes after the story make the game worth it. I like it so much that I purchased it for the switch at full price, just to see what it was like with motion controls. I have just about every FPS on the switch and the controls for SuperHot are very similar and work well for this type of game. I created an account here just to tell people what a great game this is.

SUPERHOT might have been a one-trick pony: a simple shooter that takes the classic "time warp" mechanic to its extreme. In SUPERHOT, timeSUPERHOT might have been a one-trick pony: a simple shooter that takes the classic "time warp" mechanic to its extreme. In SUPERHOT, time functions normally only when you move. When you stand still, you're in a permanent (and very slow) bullet time.

In theory, that mechanic should give you plenty of time to assess the situation and gain the upper hand in every scenario. In practice, some levels in SUPERHOT are surprisingly tense, as you struggle to take advantage of each moment to pull off elegant and very satisfying attack sequences.

SUPERHOT has low production values for a shooter–the same human models everywhere, a short length for the main story, and bland animations. Even with all those shortcomings, however, SUPERHOT is an exceptional action game. Yes, it's short–but it's exactly as long as it should be before getting repetitive, and the bleak story and addictive loop will keep you glued to the Switch until the end.

With this as its core gimmick, it creates amazing gameplay and lots of smart and tense situations. This comes with a replay system as well, replaying the level you play at full speed, but cannot be saved on the Switch. The Switch does however come with gyroscope controls that make aiming a lot easier, as you can use both the right joystick and the gyroscope controls to aim. Despite the lack of weapons, with only 3 guns, melee weapons that do the same thing and lots of throwable items, the game manages to keep the gameplay feeling refreshing. And although the campaign has a short length, the game has endless and challenge modes as well, which will last you a lot longer. All in all, SUPERHOT has addicting, fun, fluid gameplay, but the adventure doesn’t last for very long. It may be a somewhat short for $25, but if you think that you will like this game, then it’s worth the price tag. Expand

Back in January, I reviewed “SUPERHOT VR,” which I found to be among the gold standard of VR games, and easily one of my favorites of the numerous VR games I’ve played. It wasn’t until doing research for that review that I learned “SUPERHOT” was previously a non-VR game before it was released for VR devices. Thus, morbid curiosity got to me and I wanted to try the non-VR version of the game to see if it was as good (or even better) than its VR counterpart. Much of what I could say about this version, I’ve already said about the VR version, but even though I still prefer it in VR, “SUPERHOT” is an enjoyable game no matter how you play it.
Just like I said before about the VR version, “SUPERHOT” has an interesting concept, in that the world moves as you do. This concept plays well even with a regular controller, and it’s definitely a fresh take on the FPS genre. I still enjoy how the story sprinkles in very interesting, subtle bits of social commentary on our reliance and obsession with technology, and being that this version of the game is a tiny bit longer than the VR version, the story feels a bit more expansive. There’s a few interesting touches to it that are well-crafted and well-written, and as unconventional as it is, it’s all the better for it. Visually, I know some people aren’t crazy about the game, but I actually quite like it: as I mentioned before, the game’s minimalist approach shines through in its landscapes and overall design, and it’s a constant reminder that there’s beauty in simplicity.
Naturally, I still tend to have a bit more fun with the VR version, simply because I think being in VR is a perfect playground for this type of game, but using a controller doesn’t exactly detract from my enjoyment of the game. What does, though, is how short the game is: it won’t take you more than a few hours to beat at most, and the game doesn’t have the most variety to it, which can cause it to feel a bit rote after a while. I also had a few minor frustrations with some of the aiming in the game (although, full discourse, that could’ve just been me not aiming well enough), and even though it’s a minor thing, I found it weird that this is a game where, despite some of the crazy powers that my character obtains in the game, they cannot crouch. For a game whose goal is to have you stop and think and to take a more defensive approach, it would’ve been nice to have a crouch button.
Even so, VR or not, “SUPERHOT” is really a fascinating and enjoyable experience that I highly recommend. I know some people don’t own a VR (or perhaps, can’t afford one), so getting to play it in VR isn’t really an option, but while I think the VR version is the superior choice, the base game itself is a great experience as well. For all my times nearly ripping my hair out over the game’s difficult levels, I still enjoyed myself, and yeah, even without VR, I would still say “it’s the most innovative shooter I’ve played in years.” Give it a look if you haven’t already.
Final rating: 8 out of 10 “Great”
