The Bradwell Conspiracy offers an intriguing take on the first-person puzzler formula, even if its USP lacks the simple creativity of other similar puzzle games. The story itself has some real potential, but it ultimately fails to really flesh out some of the more interesting beats hinted at in news reports and audio logs. More interactive than Firewatch but far less challenging than The Witness, this is a puzzler that’s ultimately more style than substance. And with so many issues with performance in its launch state, The Bradwell Conspiracy on Switch doesn’t prove itself to be the ultimate portable version it really should be.

The truth is, I simply can’t recommend The Bradwell Conspiracy in its present state. It just misses the mark in too many areas. With some fine-tuning and polish, its technical shortcomings could eventually be overcome, in which case it’ll be ready for primetime. But playing it on the Nintendo Switch now has me reaching for a bottle of ibuprofen.

The developers of The Bradwell Conspiracy may be onto something with their immersive world, mysterious story, and top-notch voice acting but the game that surrounds all of that is nothing short of irritating.

The game falls short, however, when it comes to its gameplay experience, not only due to performance problems but especially because the gameplay experience feels disconnected from the player and a constricting interaction with the game contributes to make this experience one without much enthusiasm.

The Bradwell Conspiracy had everything going for it but unfortunately fails to deliver. The narrative may be decent, but thanks to the awkward gameplay, technical issues, and frustrating user experience, it’s hard to recommend without some serious patching.

The Bradwell Conspiracy feels like a waste. The game pulls you in on a high, but falters every step of the way. The puzzles can be entertaining, but the Substance system is frustrating and cumbersome at its absolute best moments. The story makes a big deal out of various themes, but there are only fleeting moments where it all matters. I think that the biggest problem of The Bradwell Conspiracy is that getting through it is neither fun nor rewarding. There are so many frustrating moments to be had that I would simply rather play something else.
