  • Summary: The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is an expanded re-imagining of 2013's The Stanley Parable. You will play as Stanley, and you will not play as Stanley. You will make a choice, and you will become powerless. You are not here to win. The Stanley Parable is a game that plays you.

I know that it’s weird to rave about a game without actually saying what it’s about, or what happens in it, or what you do. But as I said, the joy of The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is simply playing it, and watching as everything unfolds…and unfolds again…and then folds up and starts anew. It takes you in all kinds of unexpected directions with every playthrough, and you absolutely need to play it to fully understand what makes it great.

If you have never played Stanley Parable, you’re in for an excellent ride. Even if you have played it previously, you’re going to find a wealth of new content that has masterfully snuck itself in after several playthroughs, waiting to strike when you’ve all but fallen into your regular routine. Stanley Parable is still a masterclass in narrative storytelling and is absolutely worth revisiting (or visiting for the first time).

“NINE OUT OF TEN,” Alex bellowed as he wrote. “A thoroughly enjoyable expansion of an already classic game treated with love, care, and most importantly a meta awareness that pays tribute to everything that made The Stanley Parable so beloved. It may leave a small few questioning more than they’d like, but we wouldn’t want it any other way.” Alex wondered if this small sound bite could be considered a complete review, but he was certain that if he needed to, he could find a way to pad things out.

Much like the original version, the Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is a cryptic manifesto on game design as much as it is a game in itself, made even more playable with responsive controls on Switch and no noticeable bugs or issues. On stepping out of office 427, you find laughter, existential crises, and moments of pure bewilderment in equal amounts, and you’ll cherish every second.

The experience of The Stanley Parable is as fresh and unique now as it was almost ten years ago. To make things even better, the new content included with this Ultra Deluxe edition expands the game in new and interesting ways, making it well-worthy of a (re)visit.

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe has played well with our expectations, creating a meta-narrative that goes beyond and expands on what the original instalment wanted to do in an absurd but masterful way. The less you know about it before you play it, the better.

I love that this game is unusual, but I wish it was a bit more sandbox-style or in other words, up to you to do as you please.

From the ashes of depravity rises the phoenix of quality. How else to describe The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe?

Such a revolutionary step forward in the lineage of one of the most beloved video game properties of all time! The additions and changes made to this expansion will surely resonate in the annals of the history of all media ever made.

It is perhaps true to say that no mistakes are forever etched in stone for the stone into which The Stanley Parable was carved has itself been transmuted offering a message of hope to those who have ever erred in their judgement. You are not beyond redemption. You may change, and you may become more, so much more than you were before.

If there is any message to be taken from The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe it is this...
What a fortune, a privilege, a joy it is to have had such an experience. It leaves me hopeful that as a community - as a world there is time for us to become our greatest selves as great as we ever could dream of in our wildest, most ambitious visions for a brighter future.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. great game, the new content is literally infinite, buuuuuuuut the ultra-deluxe version is way buggier than the original, the number of times I have accidently gotten out of bounds is ridiculous, this definitely brings the score down a bit, otherwise it's one of the best games I have ever played. 4 hours in and felt like I saw everything worth seeing This is my first time playing this and I absolutely loved my experience with this.

I went in blind and finished it my casually playing over a weekend.

I took my time with it to try and listen to as much dialog as I could and went the completionist route to see absolutely everything, managed to finish it in around 6 hours. Right around the 4 hour mark is when I felt like I saw everything though. From there it feels like you're not really seeing anything new or exciting enough. You just are rushing through to get the next guaranteed known next ending with your bucket. This felt more like an art piece then a videogame which was fine and why I didn't really mind some of the repetitive stuff because that was sorta the whole point and a big part of the commentary. Overall, this was really enjoyable. Short though. Borderline on the edge if it was worth it even for a budget title at $25 on release. I probably would have felt better with myself if I spent $10 on it because once you're done you can't really replay it.

The default game stopping around 4 hours and the new content area adding maybe an addition 2 hours just doesn't give this game a lot of life. Luckily the amazing narration and meta story telling though was amazing in that short time span.
