Triangle Strategy is unique in its sprawling story, and its success is only solidified by an excellent combat system that makes battles as intense as they are intimidating. With deep lore and an overall mature approach to a genre too often dumbed down, Triangle Strategy is an RPG fans dream.

Triangle Strategy doesn’t reinvent the strategy RPG genre, but it polishes it to an HD-2D shine. Each facet of the game complements the others, and at every turn I was left waiting with baited breath to see what would happen next. A new game plus mode unlocks after rolling credits, making it all the easier to dive back in and uncover paths yet untrod, and the second I had completed one route I felt that overwhelming rush to see what I had missed. The grid-style, turn-based combat lives up to the best of its predecessors, and while it may lack the customizability of a job system, the cavalcade of recruitable party members is a worthy replacement. Whether you’re in it for the story, the gameplay, or the aesthetics, the total package is one for the ages, and from any angle the strategy is clear: add Triangle Strategy to your Switch library. Maybe tell friends and family to end their turn; you’re going to be busy for a while.

Do yourself a favor and manage to find time to play Triangle Strategy, fans of the genre will have a fantastic installment in front of them, and those who are new to this type of game will also enjoy a very, very special adventure. Triangle Strategy is simply unmissable. Tomoya Asano has once again taken it upon himself to produce a top-tier game.

Triangle Strategy is a game that welcomes numerous approaches to its strategic gameplay and multiple runs through its story. No matter which way you proceed, you’re met with an impactful experience, thought-provoking in its mechanics and the story that it tells.

Triangle Strategy is the long-awaited successor to the excellent Final Fantasy Tactics, and a game that deserves to be played not only by turn-based RPG fans, but also by anyone who loves a dark and mature story and very well-written characters.

If the story doesn’t get you, the decision making will, and if that doesn’t get you, the gameplay will. There could be more balance to the world-building V combat ratio, but each element remains superb.

Triangle Strategy may take itself a touch too seriously at times, and not all the characters deliver a backstory worth listening to, but its strengths lift it far above its weaknesses. It's not the second coming of Final Fantasy Tactics, but it deserves recognition for what it is: A truly fine turn-based strategy RPG. [Issue #59 – May/June 2022, p. 71]

Triangle Strategy has hit the ground running, setting a new standard for tactical RPGs. With a nearly perfect conviction system that adds spice to every conversation, it rewards players who take the time to explore the world and its inhabitants. The game is breathtaking to view as well with care added to everything. It features characters that grow and evolve, sometimes in unexpected ways, with the world around them. Add to that an amazingly deep, strategic combat system that allows every character to be the star of a fight while being less useful in others and there’s a lot of variety in how to approach every scenario. Fans of deep lore, choice-driven storytelling, and plenty of strategy will be enchanted by how their epic unfolds in this tactical masterpiece.

Triangle Strategy is one of the most polished strategy RPGs out there. Although it doesn’t reinvent the genre, it refines its mechanics to a point of near perfection, wrapping them within a riveting story that just takes a little while to get going.

Meticulously paced to a fault, Triangle Strategy doesn't give off the best first impression. Stick with it, though, and you'll be rewarded with engaging gameplay and a gripping story that constantly delivers.

Square Enix has created yet another incredible world that practically begs for sequels, prequels, or spin-offs. Action-packed strategic battles, a well-orchestrated gripping narrative with replayability due to its multiple paths and endings (plus the convenient inclusion of the NEW GAME+ mode after completing your first playthrough), and complex yet easy to learn and understand polished mechanics make this latest 2D-HD entry from producer Tomoya Asano an easy recommendation for Nintendo Switch.

The first handful of gameplay hours are working against Triangle Strategy. Not a lot of combat, characters that you don’t care about yet doing things that are not very interesting. However, there is an excellent game, with a fascinating story to experience, hiding behind all of that initial content. You have to learn about the world you are dropped into before you can have the ride of your life, if that’s not of interest then look elsewhere. It’s hard to say just play the first four hours, if you’re not hooked by then you’ll never be, but it’s the truth.

Triangle Strategy is a terrible name. It tells little about the game besides that it has something to do with triangles and strategy. This name ultimately fails to share anything that implies the adventure offers an incredible narrative, fantastic combat, and possibly the best implementation of choice and morality I have seen in a video game.

Triangle Strategy brings back a classical style of SRPG with modern HD-2D visuals and a refreshing branching story system. While not everything falls completely into place, a simple yet deep battle system, elaborate world building and serious character development add up to an epic tale that feels like the beginning of the comeback of a neglected genre.

Triangle Strategy feels like a love letter to classic tactical role-playing games in the best of ways. The story is compelling and detailed, and the characters you interact with really feel like they each matter. Artdink knocked it out of the park aesthetically as well, bringing the complex world of Norzelia to life in an incredible way. I loved every second of my time with Triangle Strategy, and I am looking forward to future playthroughs to explore the different branch options as well. If you are a fan of tactical games with an enticing story, Triangle Strategy checks off all the boxes and is an absolute must-play.

Triangle Strategy is a beautiful and authentic tactical RPG. Fans of Fire Emblem in particular will love the involving narrative on top of the strategic action - just be prepared for a slow start as it sets its expansive story in motion.

Triangle Strategy is pretty special. Through its challenging yet adaptive battle system it is approachable to newcomers to the genre while still offering an engaging challenge to veterans. Over the forty or so hours it took for my complete play through I felt like I got to know some wonderfully written characters through a story that took some surprising and unexpected turns, and since I had to fight so hard both on the battlefield and in conversation - the path I took and the outcome of the story felt truly mine. An excellent strategy RPG all around.

Despite some sluggish pacing near the beginning, Triangle Strategy is nearly everything I could have asked for from a new tactical RPG: a massive story filled with politics and intrigue, dynamic choices, a complex battle system that puts your skills to the test, and a gorgeous art style filled with unique touches. It’s a triumphant return to the genre for Square Enix and one that shows a bright future for the developer’s HD-2D style.

Triangle Strategy is more than a solid entry in the tactical RPG genre. Beyond the quality gameplay and role-playing component, Square Enix's new game has the luxury of a story full of unique moments, making us responsible for the paths its iconic characters can take.

I’m a huge fan of this HD-2D style approach Square Enix is taking with these games. Octopath Traveler looked like a souped-up Final Fantasy VI, and similarly, Triangle Strategy looks like a souped-up Final Fantasy Tactics with more modern mechanics and UI. I think fans of the genre are going to really appreciate what Triangle Strategy has going for it, even if the character development could use a bit more work. And for genre newcomers or those less familiar with it like myself, this is a fantastic entry point with an engaging story to keep you hooked.

We may be some time away from a new Final Fantasy Tactics, if ever. However, save the iconography, because Triangle Strategy is more or less that very experience that players have been looking for. It’s the most sweeping, expansive fantasy story I’ve played in some time, with plenty of engaging political intrigue that’ll whet many appetites. On offer is some of the best and most strategic tactics gameplay ever, rife with reward. So many setpieces, close call victories, and narrative moments will stick with me for some time. If you’re itching for a tactics game to amaze and move you this year, Triangle Strategy is it.
  29. 90
On the surface, Triangle Strategy seems like a straightforward and even no-frills homage to the tactics JRPGs of yesteryear. It has clearly been developed to tap into the same qualities that made Final Fantasy Tactics such a beloved classic for so many years, but there is more to it than that. With the tone and structure of a historical epic, Triangle Strategy is much denser and more demanding of its players than many might go into expecting. Engage with it on that level, however, and it's one of the finest examples of the genre you'll ever find.

Triangle Strategy is an excellent turn-based strategy RPG that borrows Octopath Traveler's HD-2D rendering technique to create a cohesive and fascinating high fantasy universe. Triangle Strategy is an absolute triumph for Artdink and Square Enix, a fantastic mix of satisfyingly strategic battles, an excellent choice-driven campaign narrative and top-notch world-building, all of which come together to form one of the finest tactical RPGs we've played in a very long time. There's an absolute ton of content here, with a huge story featuring multiple paths to take depending on the choices you make and several properly impactful endings to enjoy on return visits. Serenoa Wollfort's epic journey is a joy from start to finish, a grand and ambitious adventure that stands proud as one of the very finest examples of its genre on Switch.

Triangle Strategy is a game with a mature story and several interesting routes to explore. Its audiovisual aspect is also fantastic and charismatic, and its gameplay, although a bit slow, is challenging. Taking all this into account, it is a highly recommended strategy game.

The adventures through the Kingdom of Glenbrook provide a compelling experience, more so for those who love choice-based games that involve intriguing plots and tactical combat. Triangle Strategy is one of the few games where making decisions that matter is harder than actually winning battles. This is one of those games that could leave a mark on an entire gerne if Square Enix decides to turn it into a franchise.

Triangle Strategy’s long (maybe too long), nonlinear story should appeal to tactical RPG aficionados but even if it doesn’t, they will be completely absorbed in one of the best tactical combat systems ever created. Every fan of the genre simply must play this game, while the rest should at least consider giving it a chance.

    85
Triangle Strategy is, without a doubt, a great strategy game that contains a number of elements that affect the experience in a negative way. At the moment, it is a title that I don't see leaving a legacy as far-reaching as TO or FFT, but it can certainly become the basis for a title that will even surpass those classics. What I can say, however, is that even with those details, it is still one of the best SRPGs on Switch and definitely recommended for fans of the genre.
  40. Apr 19, 2022
    85
Triangle Strategy weaves a mature story full of intrigue and places the player in an unenviable position of having to make some very tough choices with meaningful consequences, all the while challenging them to face encounters that will test their strategic mind. In other words, it’s a compelling good time.

Triangle Strategy pushes heavily into its narrative, perhaps to the detriment of its turn-based combat. That will turn some away. But for those who are willing to push through, you’ll find the game worth (nearly) every second you put into it. Excellent level design, diverse character abilities, and a tense political climate generate an engrossing experience for JRPG fans.

Triangle Strategy is a turn-based strategy game that everybody will love. The plot is thick and will make us read dialogues for several hours, but this is compensated for by its unique characters and the game system.

Triangle Strategy is a little too safe to call a new classic, but at the same time, it's one of the best SRPGs I've played in ages. The solid level design and fantastic character variety keep the game engaging all the way to the end. The plot is a touch mundane, but I ended up being quite fond of most of the characters. Triangle Strategy is an example of a title that does almost everything right. If you're a SRPG fan, then Triangle Strategy is right up your alley; if you're not, it's a great place to start.
  44. Mar 28, 2022
    85
Triangle Strategy focuses on delivering a deep story with an emphasis on player choices and dealing with the consequences of those choices. The amount of narrative between battles might be too much for some players, however, it’s also what makes the game stand out. The combat and class systems are relatively straightforward but rewarding in their own right. Finally, with four different endings and multiple different paths throughout, Triangle Strategy will make you keep coming back for more.
  45. Mar 21, 2022
    85
Triangle Strategy can feel a bit overwhelming and the resolution in handheld mode is not really fine, but with these points mentioned the praise begins. Because the game provides you with a very exciting and captivating story, has a high replay value through the choices you make, has many scenarios and the tough but tactical combat is the icing on the cake. An excellent game for the Nintendo Switch.
  46. Mar 13, 2022
    85
Triangle Strategy stumbles just enough in those areas to note it, but excels when it comes to tactical combat. It feels right at home on the Switch, as a perfect blend of strategy and RPG to keep coming back to, with just enough reasons to keep exploring post-credits and alternate routes. It may not be a deft landing, but Triangle Strategy is ultimately the tactical RPG I was hoping it would be, holding its own in an increasingly competitive field.
  47. 85
The game is as remarkable as it appears. Especially, when you turn it on for the first time and many times after! The graphics will brighten up your eyes and the game’s adventure and options will keep your brain in tip-top shape. It’s something that won’t leave you fully bored or regret not trying it out, as it’s got plenty to offer.
  48. Mar 10, 2022
    85
If Triangle Strategy unquestionably deserves a very good note, it should still be noted that the adventure will not be suitable for everyone. If you are allergic to long discussions and other narrative scenes intended to enrich your knowledge of the universe and the characters, the experience may be a little painful for you. Not only the scenario, clearly inspired by Game of Thrones, is really worthy of interest, but the combat system is also rich and interesting.

Triangle Strategy succeeds where it was perhaps not expected. In addition to these enticing visuals combining pixel-art and 3D effects, and its rather effective combat system despite a certain classicism, it offers a most coherent universe and above all a gripping scenario.

    85
Triangle Strategy is an amazing game, but it could be even better if it managed to get rid of the most classic topics of the JRPG genre. Its mechanics completely overshadow everything it wants to tell us; how it is played is a thousand times better than what it is played for. Besides that i really think that this will be one of the best silent games of 2022.

    84
Triangle Strategy masterfully accomplishes its blend of rewarding SRPG gameplay and engaging choice-driven story. If you're a fan of narrative-heavy games and tactical grid-based battles then it's a must-have game.

    83
Playing Triangle Strategy’s battles is probably the easiest and most carefree part of the experience. There’s a lot of fun in strategizing and watching your characters’ abilities shine, and I loved outsmarting the competition. The hardest part of the journey is the choices alongside the bleak realities it makes you confront about injustices of the world. The game has multiple endings, letting you pick your vision for the future. Even with my ending, which was one for a much more idealized, compassionate world, I was left a little disheartened. But, maybe, that’s the point. And for that, Triangle Strategy isn’t like most games you’ll play, which is what makes it special, even if it’s not always perfect in the delivery of its harsh truths.

    82
Triangle Strategy has the seal of approval of Tomoya Asano, producer of other RPGs that have stood out for having a special touch. This tactical RPG sweetens the look for its aesthetics and draws us in little by little, in a drama full of tragic overtones. The robust story and its battle system are its strong points, although the exploration is practically nil. The narrative is dense and at times very slow, which make the battles feel like a prize for which we waited a long time.
  56. Mar 4, 2022
    82
If you're looking for an old-fashioned tactical RPG, Triangle Strategy will quench your thirst and lead you to a plot that will keep you hooked like the best works of medieval literature. Its combat will also dazzle you, although it may take a little longer, until you get the hang of the many options offered by each simple movement in this battle of pixels with which Team Asano wanted to prove that this is their thing. And tactical on top of that.
  57. 82
Triangle Strategy knows how to tell an exciting story, and that's its greatest asset. The strategy mechanics are unfortunately inferior to the great classics from which it takes its inspiration, but the great replayability should keep you glued to the Switch screen for a long time.

Triangle Strategy delivers a great tactical combat system that's as complex in a pleasant way as it is fun. The twisty, decision based storyline is interesting and makes the game feel more immersive. But on the other hand, it could have been more summarized, because the amount of time you'll spend on story sequences (if you don't skip it) is just too high related to the the time you'll spent on the battlefields.

The game may not be at its best right away, but once Triangle Strategy really begins, it is surprisingly successful at telling a story based on real-world ideas like competition for resources and noble ambitions, and these human stories succeed and overcome even a rather uncomfortable main character. The game allows for meaningful choices while also including a voting system for party members that can override your wishes – based on self-established hindsight – in fascinating ways. Underlying it all is combat, which is simple, well-designed, and suitably challenging in all the right ways, Triangle Strategy may be silent in its grandeur, but it's still great.

Triangle Strategy does almost everything well. It looks great, sounds good, plays great, features an excellent story, and offers enough variance in its multiple paths to provide significant replay value. There’s no one element it gets wrong. Its biggest issue comes in how it puts these various elements together. If you’re okay with long story sequences with the combat taking a bit of a back seat, you’ll love Triangle Strategy. Despite the balance of these various elements feeling a bit off, each element is so well executed that this is still a must-play for fans of the genre.

    80
When it comes down to it, Triangle Strategy really impresses with its deep battle and party system, storytelling and clean visual presentation aside from some performance issues. While some of the voice acting is somewhat weak, the cast is up to the task to deliver on the well written and engaging tale. However, oftentimes the scales weigh too heavily in favor of the story over the major battling moments, removing quite a bit of player engagement. Even though time spent between gameplay and story is unbalanced, the overall experience is well worth a look for tactics fans.

    80
Although Triangle Strategy might not be the second coming of Final Fantasy Tactics that some are hoping for, it’s an excellent entry into the tactical RPG genre that should have players enraptured for dozens of hours. Just be prepared to spend an awful lot of time with characters who have a tendency to talk too much and say too little. The plot itself is intriguing enough and the gameplay mechanics compelling enough to keep you coming back, but one can’t help but pine for the character work of the games that clearly inspired this one.

You’ll get the most out of Triangle Strategy if you bring a little patience to the proceedings. It starts slow. It throws a lot of story at you. The most interesting tactical powers show up in later levels. And you only see some of its compelling narrative beats in a second or third play. It’s destined to be a game you either shrug off in the early hours or add to your list of favorites.

Triangle Strategy boasts a deep story with an involved battle system that remains fun throughout and approachable to those who might not have a strategic head. The cutscenes can be overly long and choices don’t have as big of an impact as they should, but it’s still a great strategy game that you can really sink your teeth into.

Triangle Strategy is one of these games that is more than just a simple sum of its elements. But remember - Japanese tactical RGPs are odd. If you haven't played anything from this genre, be sure to check out the demo version first.

When I began Triangle Strategy, the plodding pace of the story was a low point I had to get through to play the tactical battles. As time went on, that calculation flipped. The strategy segments are streamlined and enjoyable, even if the class system is missing the amount of flexibility and nuance that I'd like. But instead of getting through the story segments to play more combat, I found myself getting through the combat to see more story. It's overindulgent at times, but I became invested in my band of trusted advisors as they carefully navigated a fraught mixture of war and politics. And more than many games, I felt the burden of the decisions I reached, the relationships they shattered, and the lives they impacted, as belonging to me alone.

    80
Triangle Strategy is a unique tactical JRPG, excelling in delivering enjoyable tactical combat and developing an intricate world where the complexities weigh heavily on the choices players have to make. It isn’t without its issues as the execution of such rich world building and interpersonal relationships requires a lot of exposition which leads to pacing issues. Even if the player is interested in the developing narrative, some of the early cutscenes drag on for too long and simply end up being boring. The tradeoff is that those who can get through the slower-paced games are rewarded with a challenging battle system and choices that have a significant impact on the story. A New Game Plus feature allows players to carry over their progress to see how different decisions play out and unlock the multiple endings and the game is enjoyable enough where repeated playthroughs sound like an inviting prospect.

Triangle Strategy is much more than a nostalgic reminder of the long gone era of the old tactical JRPG. Rich story, the decisions that have meaning and a very elaborate world and characters, put it in a class for itself. However, due to its format and a slower pace, especially in the beginning, the recommendation is only for fans of the genre and extremely patient gamers - it pays off in the end.

Triangle Strategy is shockingly successful at telling a grounded human story in a fantasy world, even if its main cast is extremely dull. That plot is backed up by simple but well-designed and appropriately challenging combat.

If nothing else, Triangle Strategy shows that Square Enix has some fire in its turn-based tactical engine. It just needs to balance its scales between exposition and gameplay a little better.

Triangle Strategy puts a lot of effort into its story and presentation, but it is fairly standard fantasy that is not well acted. Fortunately, the tactical gameplay, based on Final Fantasy Tactics, is stronger than ever. The ramifications in the story provide new missions and characters, so replaying the campaign is extra fun.

A worthy follower of Quest legacy with some interesting advances in narratives choices, but not as excellent as the games from Matsuno.

Triangle Strategy is an excellent strategy game with a heavy focus on a very good, very malleable story. Characters are well-written and very likeable, the story goes to some absolutely fascinating places, and the game’s strategy combat is best-in-class amongst its peers. Unfortunately, inconsistent visuals and a gameplay/story balance skewed far too heavily on the story side hold it back at times — but looking past that is easy when the rest of it is so good.

Triangle Strategy is a very good tactical JRPG for newcomers but a few nuisances prevent it from being truly excellent.

A real treat for strategy lovers with very well designed combats. Interesting additions such as the voting system are appreciated as well as the decisions and the different endings, which provide a lot of replayability.

Triangle Strategy is an excellent game that expertly combines satisfying combat and a layered narrative to create something I didn’t know I needed. Serenoa Wollfort’s journey is punctuated with intrigue, betrayal, and triumph that are all driven by player decisions that actually feel like they matter. It isn’t smoke and mirrors on a moral railroad presenting the illusion of choice, it's a ride or die political rollercoaster where failing to convince a single ally will result in the untimely deaths of thousands.

Where Square Enix’s first HD-2D game Octopath Traveler suffered from a disjointed narrative, Triangle Strategy excels with rich world-building with an ambitious but grounded story of conflict and loyalty that will test your convictions as much as your tactical prowess. With engaging battles and a varied roster, it’s an old-school tactical RPG you’ll be glad to return to and make more devastatingly conflicting choices.

Triangle Strategy is a must-have for anyone who enjoys a good tactical RPG, pretty visuals, or a choice-based story which makes your decisions actually matter. Although anyone can try the first three chapters of the game for free on the eShop, I can’t emphasise enough how little justice this demo does for the whole game - as each hour passed, I progressively fell further and further in love with it, and the very first thing I wanted to do upon seeing the credits roll was find out what would have happened if I’d made different choices. The replay value it offers is immense - although the main campaign can be finished in around 35 hours, it really doesn’t have to stop there at all. Even with the Switch’s stacked 2022 lineup, I genuinely believe Triangle Strategy is going to be up there with the very best releases of the year.

Triangle Strategy is within reach of strategic perfection, even if some of the efforts that have been made to set it apart falter. Square Enix’s return to the tactical RPG genre may not be an outright triumph, but, despite the imbalance between narrative and action on the battlefield, there is much more to applaud here than there is to criticise.

Triangle Strategy is a very solid tactical game that rewards smart decisions. The conviction system that drives the story reminds me of the older Ultima games, and I appreciate that positioning is as important as a character's abilities during combat. While Triangle Strategy suffers from some of the same issues as Octopath Traveler in terms of its slow pace, the game is still a worthy successor to the likes of Final Fantasy Tactics. This is a game that you'll want to pour hours into, even if some of those hours are eaten up by cutscenes and monologues.
  93. After spending almost 30 hours on my first playthrough, I can confidently say that where Triangle Strategy truly shines is in its worldbuilding. When faced with tough decisions, I felt that I had agency; my choices impacted the events that unfolded throughout the game. [...] Better English voice acting would have been icing on the cake, though. The half-baked vocal delivery left me feeling a bit deflated.

Triangle Strategy creates an experience where players must think and choose actions carefully, and where decisions matter. This focus makes it an excellent choice for those who prefer a good story over hack-and-slash battles and aimless combat.

Triangle Strategy is an enormous tactical RPG with a solid turn-based battle system. Its epic plot and lengthy dialogue may be a bit overbearing, but anyone willing to take on an extremely detailed story will have a wealth to do here.

Story battles take about 20 minutes, while dialogue, inventory management, practice fights and everything else that takes place in-between them can take up to two hours. Nevertheless, the quality of story battles makes up for the wait because they offer a lot of variety, and every problem can be solved in a multitude of ways. [Issue#260, p.44]

The SLG part of Triangle Strategy is quite worth playing, but this game slightly falls short in terms of story design and role development freedom and still lags far behind Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics, the games to which it pays homage. Despite being unremarkable, it is still an SLG game worth trying, given the scarcity of this type of games lately.

Every aspect of this game is steeped in strategy. The choice system, the combat, and the core narrative all reinforce this idea. Especially the story, which maintains a desperate intensity throughout. Your every move is carefully considered, and each response carries serious weight. Between this intensity and the measured pace, my focus occasionally suffered. My tendency to level grind also backfired on me, adding extra strain to the runtime. On the other hand, the battles were all addictive and compelling. So much so that you resent the other sections a little. While the pressures of running a High House may seem oppressive, don’t despair! Each struggle comes with its own rich rewards. If you’ve got the patience for it, Triangle Strategy will get its hooks deep in your brain.

Triangle Strategy is a game that fans of tactical RPGs will love. Combat is very entertaining, and its visual art is worth seeing. We only wish they balanced the gameplay side a bit more with its narrative so we were not mere spectators of the story.

If not for an extremely slow burner of a start, this game was a must-have for every tactical-JRPG fan that has a Switch. But seriously, even though the game takes a lot of time to reveal it's true power, don't let it deter you from playing what is eventually an awesome and very smart game.

With Triangle Strategy Artdink fails to dethrone the legends Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. However, it accomplishes its mission brilliantly, offering an experience very close to its two illustrious models, while bringing some ingredients of its own. With the balance of judgment, Triangle Strategy manages to differentiate itself by relying heavily on persuasion and interesting moral choices, even if it means being far too talkative.

A lot of people have really raved about Triangle Strategy and held it up as an excellent game. I don’t think it’s a bad game, but I do think that it’s ultimately just an alright one. It’s solid and functional, takes too long to get to its plot, has some awkwardness that prevents me from really falling in love with it, and has some fun parts that don’t eliminate those issues even as they make things a bit better. And if you’re like me and still looking out for more Final Fantasy Tactics… well, keep waiting. This ain’t it.

It may seem that I’m cold on Triangle Strategy, but that's really just because I think it lands just shy of greatness. Hardcore strategy fans may not truly enjoy this unless they keep their expectations in check, but otherwise, Triangle Strategy does a great job repackaging a classic genre for a modern generation. The narrative lacks the tact and nuance to be remembered alongside the greats, but it still offers an engaging war drama that kept me invested. It sacrifices complexity for approachability in both the story and gameplay, which works even if I have some reservations. If you’re looking for a great introduction SRPG or are desperate to get your fill on the Switch, Triangle Strategy should be on your radar.

Triangle Strategy is a great strategic battler, meshed with devilish politicking and weighty decisions. It’s just a shame the cast of characters never gets a chance to shine just as bright.

Triangle Strategy feels like: “Oops, All Exposition,” and while I did find myself enjoying it at times, I found myself glazing over far too often. It’s clearly got a big story to tell, but at the expense of all the other gameplay, and it ends up feeling more like a visual novel with some combat encounters, so it can technically be called a game. I’ve no doubt people will find something to enjoy here, but speaking for myself—as someone who genuinely likes turn-based strategy games—I’ve had to really push myself to enjoy it, and I don’t know how many people will.

Triangle Strategy tells a deep political story on a grand scale, packed with unique characters, betrayals and twists and turns. Unfortunately, there is no real interesting tactical gameplay.

A visual novel that offers the occasional diversion into some engaging turn-based strategy but would’ve been infinitely better if it had curtailed it’s long-winded storytelling aspirations.

As a result of all this, despite its often glacial pace, Triangle Strategy is a dramatic, often engrossing tale of medieval conflict - and one that can sit proudly next to the games that inspired it. [Eurogamer Recommended]

In the end, it’s the lack of confidence that gets me. Because on paper, Triangle Strategy resembles my dream game. And at certain points, it comes pretty damn close. It just can’t help exerting a heavy hand to force-feed the story as it’s “meant to be.” Like a Lego employee kicking down my door to chastise me for ignoring the instruction manual, it rarely lets me build my own structure with the bricks piled in front of me.

    Actual review.

Pros: Gorgeous visuals, though they can at times be a tiny bit janky. All in all its among the most pleasant to look at on switch. 9/10

Music: As memorable and infectious as anything from Square. Though definitely not very unique. 7.5/10

Mechanics: The games true sweet spot. The battles and systems are engaging without being overwhelming or impossible. Some can be quite challenging but for the most part hard but fair difficulty.9.5/10

    Cons:

Script: Written like a middle school fan fiction of the War of the Roses. While it picks up later in the game its still very poorly written and expects a LOT of the player to endure completely unneeded linguistic flourishes that are strewn about haphazardly and add nothing to the plot but run time. 3/10

Which brings to the worst element in the game

Voice acting: Inexcusable. The voice actors all sound bored and disinterested. Too many of the voice actors sound nearly identical making characters indistinguishable. You would be better served to turn voice down to zero than listen to this because it is grating and really detracts from the game. It might be something you could overlook had it not been for how much narrative exposition went into the game. 0/10

Pacing: Poor. Its too much like a JRPG pacing where it inexcusably takes like 2 hours worth of cut scenes before getting to any actual game play. Its worse here. In 7 hours of play there was all of 2 battle sequences. YMMV but dont expect much different. It takes far too much time trying to set up these three kingdoms and their strife at the expense of the player. Once it gets that out of the way and picks up the pace it becomes enjoyable but that is beyond the 10 hour mark. That is a MASSIVE commitment on the part of the player to slog through such poorly written and voice acted drek. 3.5/10

    Summary: 6/10
If you can endure the horrendous voice acting and ball and chain pacing there is a true gem here. The mechanics and battles do make up for the terrible cliched and uninspired story once you actually get to them. I would almost say another year of development time would have benefitted this project but its not the technicals that are lacking, Someone should be fired for thinking the writing and voice acting was in any way acceptable. So it definitely drags the whole project down and inevitably this is a game that will quickly get traded in and in a year you will see copies of this for sale about 25-35 dollars because of the quality of those fatal flaws.

Definitely worth a buy, but definitely not at full 60$ price tag.
