Thanks to the Rumble HD in the JoyCon, you get a sense of that physical feedback you would once have got naturally from those mechanical arcade machines; you feel your seed rolling from one side of the screen to the other. And while the tension of TumbleSeed makes it a surprisingly great spectator game, this just feels right in portable mode, with that precarious, procedurally generated mountain in the palms of your hands.

TumbleSeed is the perfect combination of addicting gameplay, with a plethora of varied elements that solidifies itself among the pantheon of great roguelikes. Each run has its own unique feel that continues to keep the game incredibly fresh, whether it’s your tenth or hundredth run. While it’s a shame there’s no way to submit a score offline, the rest of the game shines so bright it’s easy to overlook. If you’re looking for a challenging, but insanely satisfying roguelike, look no further.

Tumbleseed is just a game about concentration and survival. Simple to understand, incredibly hard to master. There’s a variety of different approaches to the levels, depending on your play style, and no matter what, the game will always give you a challenge.

Play with no goal but enjoying the moment – and prepare to die, again and again and again. [Issue #28 – July/August 2017, p. 22]

TumbleSeed is unique and different, and has very distinctive features. It's roguelike take on a skill-based game isn't for everyone, but if you like how it sounds, give it a try.

Each time I finally reached a new level, I was ecstatic. However you manage it, it's as rewarding to survive as it is frustrating to fail. But when those rewards start to feel further and further apart, it can be difficult to keep coming back for another climb.

The controls are very different and unique, but it can also make it frustrating until you get used to them.

Personally, I'm 50 hours in and still play daily. There's a lot of deep strategy and even quite a few secrets! The devs are also very responsive to any problems we're having (in the TumbleSeed discord) and overall there's a great community!

The game is very hard (many people say it's unfairly hard). The controls are also hard to learn. The game is simple when it comes to the gameplay. However, it gets deeper and more interesting the more you play it. The more time I spend on this game, the more I like it and the more I want to play it; and I think that defines a good roguelike. I love rogue-likes andAlthough I have absolutely no connection to the developers, I had to create a metacritic account to review this game. I love rogue-likes and this is one of the most interesting additions to the scene in a long time. I've played for a few hours already and it's easily one of my favorite games I have for the switch (I even have the big ones like Zelda and Mariokart). At first it might be frustratingly difficult, but as you get a feeling for the controls and the weight of the physics, you will fall deeper in love with it. Additionally the HD rumble is fantastic and highlights what the switch is really capable of. Beyond all that, the visuals and music are also stunning. Expand

It's a great indie title, but there is just one problem, this game is over before you know it. There are only 4 linear worlds, and in each there are 3 challenges to complete, but overall, once you've done everything, you simply feel unsatisfied. The game tries to trick you into thinking there is more content by sporting a daily and weekly challenge on the main menu, but none of these matter, especially since your score will be forgotten to time. If you find TumbleSeed on sale it is worth it, but not at the standard price. Expand
