Warsaw is a complex and deep game that forces players to fight against seemingly impossible odds while making difficult decisions. You must fight against the looming threat of an enemy hell bent on conquest as you deal with the horrors left to fester in the cracks of the battlefield. The combat is fast-past with a fun system that rewards you for battling smart, and the storytelling is simple yet compelling, leaving you wanting to learn more. It’s captivating, exhilarating, terrifying, and crushing with just enough slivers of hope that attempt to motivate you to keep fighting the good fight. And despite a few hiccups, Warsaw most certainly succeeds in that regard.

Warsaw provides a unique – and honestly bleak – perspective of a dark time in our collective history. Difficult enough to prove a worthy challenge, with an over-complexity that might have benefitted from a little self-restraint.

I really like that the difficulty of Warsaw seems intrinsically tied to the plight of the Polish people during the Uprising, even if it does at times make the game more punishing than fun. Having never played it on PC (or for that matter the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One) it's difficult to say whether the Nintendo Switch is the way to experience the game, but I am happy to concede playing it there felt like a completely natural experience. If you're in need of a new roguelike and have an affinity for World War Two history, Warsaw is well-worth a look.

Warsaw's a disheartening experience through and through, and normally that would be enough for a low score and some harsh words. But we think that, here, the futility is rather the point of the exercise. It's not going to be for everyone by any means, but fans of Valiant Hearts or This War of Mine will get a kick out of its stark, unforgiving world. War is hell. Warsaw is hell. But it's a pretty good hell, which makes it at least a seven.

Warsaw is an effective, albeit brutal, historical rogue like on Switch. Fans of tactical RPGs or the period generally should get something out of this. [Issue #2, p. 75]

Like the historical event that it's based on, Warsaw does not forgive - its difficulty is relentless and will not give players a moment to breathe. If this makes for an extremely challenging experience, it also acts as an obstacle for beginners who will feel put off. The game's combat system is compelling once the player masters it, and the soundtrack contributes significantly to this experience, but the game maps, where a lot of the action takes place, could be more elaborate to help the players find theeir way around.

Warsaw is an interesting concept which does do quite a few things right, but its inconsistency of vision prevents it from achieving the same greatness as the games it was clearly inspired by. Pixelated Milk are at their best when they are holding players in the desperate struggle for survival, where each tactical decision matters a great deal between life and death. But it takes real concentration on the player’s part to make these systems work, compounded by UI issues on the Switch which only further exhaust players. There are plenty of games which set out to do things similar to what Warsaw does, but more effectively.
