Just like Gollum, I'm a bit split. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum features a great story that adds to the lore, along with a terrific stealth system, but it misses the mark in other areas. A finicky and redundant platforming system, mixed with a dialogue system that lacks bite makes for a combination that drags the rest down. Gollum is always so close to The Ring, but ever so far.
What could have been Daedalic’s chance to break into mainstream has ultimately backfired. A waste of a license, riddled with performance issues and just downright ugly gameplay, Gollum should be cast into any nearest fire, let alone a wasted trip to Mount Doom.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is nothing more than a failed project that should have been cancelled, but since it is a lucrative IP, it was released to the market to deceive the unwary and that, gentlemen, is a scam that should not be be tolerated in this industry.
What makes Gollum stand out is that most other developers and publishers then use their creative teams to try and hide the crass cynicism and capitalism. Daedalic didn’t bother with Gollum. This game represents the games industry with its mask off.
Fans of the movies and books can certainly do something with "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum". The plot continues to be told by Gollum and we are presented with new information. The character's inner conflict also comes across well. Unfortunately, there is a weak graphical splendor and a rather annoying control. Some moments in the game are good and many other passages have simply become weak and frustrating. Thus, "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum" has not become a bad game, but joins the long list of average games of the genre.
Daedalic has one been among the best developers for any kind of adventures, bringing us gems like Deponia. Therefore, it is even more hurtful to play through this abomination ****, that could have been an interesting take on one of Tolkien´s most interesting characters, but instead delivering nothing except frustration and physical pain on every possible level.
