This is a game that will have you thinking about how intense, perplexing, and perfect it was for days. Like a tiny mouse says early in the game -- "the harder the victory, the greater the joy of success".

1001 Spikes is a fun, varied and well-designed 2D platformer that makes use of old-school mechanics to impose a steep difficulty curve and a thousand and one obstacles that even experienced players will find challenging. A very welcome addition to the eShop’s library.

The frustrating lack of off-TV play aside, 1001 Spikes is a spirited, fun title that exemplifies the creative indie spirit that is permeating the eShop.

The sheer volume of content on offer here is quite impressive, as is the presentation.

But somehow, the small scale trials found in the levels of 1001 Spikes bring me back. Grabbing the key and making it inches from the stage door before dying carries a similar weight, and makes realizing the far-fetched goal all the sweeter.

If gamers are looking for a super challenging, rage inducing but fair game, they will be quite happy with their purchase. If what they are looking for is an easy going, charming platformer, it is highly advised to look elsewhere.

After a long time of waiting, my time had come to go through the trials of Aban Hawkins and the 1001 spikes, preparing to stay up all night frustrated with the difficulty of the levels that were to come. But to my surprise, i didn't find this game to be as difficult as it looked, still hard as heck. But I had gotten through the game in just a couple hours... Although with the huge variety of different playable characters and the dozens of levels that are included within the game, as well as the fun action packed multiplayer modes. Id say i definitely got my moneys worth. Expand

The level of difficulty is both the game's most appealing feature and it's downfall. A lot of deaths in this game use cheap tactics by having invisible tripwires, unnoticeable trap doors and dart launchers. If you want a game with unreasonably hard levels that will probably last you quite a few hours, this is the game for you. if you want a game that focuses on story or is not very difficult i do not recommend this game. Instead of presenting a fair challenge in which your skills get better as you progress, hardly ever presenting a challenge that you are prepared or can even recognize. It's good at making you frustrated and through that it makes its challenge. It is not balanced or gradual instead it is cheap. It is not Castlevania, Megaman, Shovel Knight or Mario where it is fair rather expect a lot of cheap kills. It is still fun but not as great as it could be. Expand

Specifically, they are designs where if you getAt first this seems like a great game, but eventually the levels become poorly designed. Specifically, they are designs where if you get through the first part of the level and you get to the second part [yay! i did it!] at the wrong time in the second part's sequence, you die instantly. You have to predict the exact timing of the rest of the level, and that isn't fun. If you survive the first part, you should have a chance at the second part, [it should be a "sure you could die instantly, but in an avoidable way" situation], this is just immature gratuitous game design Expand
