The game isn’t perfect, and the retro gaming style may not appeal to everyone, but if you are looking for a retro gaming history lesson, Life of Pixel is a must own.
If you fancy yourself a brutal challenge that hearkens back to gaming's days of yore, this is a one-way ticket to the 80's and 90's that won't cost you much more than a bad new wave CD.
Life of Pixel is an act of love to the retrogaming era. Unfortunately the nostalgia effect it's not enough to pass on some poor game design decisions.
Life of Pixel does a fine job at recreating the nostalgic environments of videogaming from the 1980s and 1990s, with all the references in the rights places and the visual and sound aspects that go with the job. However, its level design suffers from imbalances when the experiences become too repetitive and the gameplay too shallow, which harms the overall feeling of insertion into a 1980s and 1990s gaming setting.
A valiant effort for a small indie company. Despite the simple gameplay, the novel graphic styles and various homages to classic games were enough to keep me interested until the end.
The game is perfectly playable and there will undoubtedly be more than a few moments of genuine platforming pleasure, but along the way you’re going to have to make your way through a lot of ho-hum running and jumping that’s occasionally punctuated by bouts of frustration due to stiff mechanics and needlessly cheap level design.
