Despite the introduction of amiibo, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash has little new content. Camelot powered up the gameplay instead, an over-the-top approach embodied by the Mega Mushroom, although the Jumpshot stands as the biggest addition. And the series' legendary accessibility, depth and balance also improved through this great touch of design, which elevates "Jumpman Tennis" among the most convivial games.

Treat it as an HD remaster of the N64 game and this is actually one of the best Mario Tennis games since then, but the lack of features and extra content is a real turn-off.

It can be fun with friends, but it truly lacks content, and is not even remotely excellent, especially when compared to other Nintendo titles that were able to reimagine sports gaming in unexpected ways. Consider it only if you have kids, or if you are looking for an intuitive party game.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash isn't more hilarious and intense than its gamecube predecessor, buts it adds a solid and strong online mode. However, it has lack of single player content.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash is a poor game. Although it's fun and simplistic gameplay, it doesn't offer anything that goes beyond of what we had saw from the series in the past. It just simple feels hollow, with few game modes and little replay value. However everything is not that bad; at least its multiplayer mode is enjoyable, even more when playing locally.

I wanted to love Ultra Smash, but it fought me at every turn to keep me from wanting to play more of it.

It seems someone forgot to develop a game before publishing it, because MTUS lacks content so desperately that it looks like a mini game from Mario Party. [02/2016, p.63]

Looked cool from the trailer and all but the game itself has no "special effects" as in super powers. It's as if they wanted to make it more tennis like. This game was very dull/boring and I wouldn't recommend buying it unless your into that kind of stuff. I enjoy it of course because it does have very cool graphics and a nice concept but the over-all game isn't as fun as Mario Power Tennis. I really do hope they sell an new version or at least create an update Expand

The newest Mario Tennis game is the definition of bear bones. You have the selection of 5 modes; Ultra Smash, Mega ball rally, KnockoutThe newest Mario Tennis game is the definition of bear bones. You have the selection of 5 modes; Ultra Smash, Mega ball rally, Knockout Challenge, Classic, and Online. The main mode is Ultra smash which is very toads throw mega mushrooms onto the court making whoever walks into them become giant. While giant your cover more ground and have a more powerful shot. I found this mode to be boring and doesn’t belong at the main game mode. The chance shots return in this mode which I prefer to have off but when the toads sometimes throw the mega mushrooms at different times giving one player a huge disadvantage for no reason. The toads also throw the mega mushrooms way too frequently. There really is no depth to this gamemode at all. Mega ball rally has you hitting a ball back and forth as it gets smaller. This mode is a little boring but is fun with a partner. If you want to play alone, good luck since the AI will use the chance shot sometimes making it harder to hit the ball!!! Knockout challenge has you beating a bunch of opponents as they increase in difficulty. Thats pretty much it except for the fact that you can train your amiibos for online play here if for some reason you want to save data for mario tennis instead of smash bros. Classic mode is the best mode which is just normal tennis, this has the least amount of cheap plays and is the most balanced but then again it’s just normal tennis which makes you wonder what the point of mario tennis ultra smash is. The game is played in the same stadium no matter what and it very generic looking. You can change the court to different textures which affect how the ball bounces and moves but that's it. No gimmicky stages like in previous Mario Tennis games. The last mode is online which works fairly well and is fun to play. Too bad due to poor sales i don’t expect it will be easy to find opponents after the first month of release. You can also gain star points from any mode which can only be used to unlock characters and terrain or extra lives in the knockout challenge and removing all replay value in this game. The game looks great but there isn’t anything to it that make me feel that a lot of effort was put into it either. There is no story either!!!! This is one of the shallowest games in terms of content that Nintendo has ever made. It feels rushed to make it out for the holiday season. There just isnt anything there to keep you coming back. This is a dust collector game in the Wii U’s library which is a real shame. Mario Tennis Ultra Smash gets a 4/10 -Infinite Expand

This is even worse than Street Fighter 5! At least SF got Arcade Edition but Mario Tennis still to this day has NOTHING to do. Avoid!
