You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this valley with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and save his lost beloved. He wields a ShovelBlade; a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly. However, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent Shovel Knight from reaching the Enchantress at any cost. Expand

One of those games that just blows your mind at how good it actually is.

But more than anything else, Shovel Knight oozes personality and charm more than any game I’ve played in recent memory.

Old school gamers will love Shovel Knight’s retro sensibilities, but they’ll also appreciate its modern touches.

Shovel Knight isn't just inspired by 8-bit classics, it is inspired in and of itself.

Shovel Knight is a heartfelt homage to the NES days, with tight gameplay, simple but effective 8bit-ish graphics and a killer soundtrack. It could use a couple of levels more and additional game modes.

Shovel Knight is a memorable re-imagining of what I grew up with, but doesn't have the longevity or inventiveness to be great in its own right.

It was beautifully nostalgic, and merits purchase from all you sentimental folks just based on the old-time yet gorgeous graphics and memorable gameplay. However, speaking as someone too young to really be nostalgic at all, this is NOT the only thing Shovel Knight has going for it.

It was undeniably fun to play. I've never really been into the older games that much, but this game makes me want to give them a second look. Of all the games I got over the holidays, this one was hands-down my favorite. I especially liked the Relics and Armor/Weapon upgrades. Not to mention the game's sheer uniqueness.

In a world where everything's already been done, Shovel Knight managed to give me a genuinely new experience, despite its old-school style. On top of everything else, the difficulty is perfectly balanced - You won't be able to blow through it your first try, but it isn't impossible to beat either. An excellent Wii U purchase.

Oh, and a note... Use the D-pad, not the joystick. You'll find things so much easier.

Due to budget and manpower constraints it's common for indie games to emulate the aesthetics and gameplay of classics from the halcyon days of 8 & 16-bit machines, yet I can confidently say that no game in recent memory captures that nostalgic magic quite like Shovel Knight.
Objectively the game accomplishes EVERYTHING it sets out to do, from old-school challenge and level design to charming characters and GREAT music. What distinguishes Shovel Knight amongst the likes of Volgarr the Viking and Super Time Force is how authentically it recalls games of yesteryear; despite subtle flourishes of modern flair, it's almost as if Shovel Knight's presence has been erased from the collective consciousness of gaming history only for him to reappear now as a stalwart saviour of classic design.
Shovel Knight is branching out to more platforms this year, which can only be a good thing. It's only fitting that his console debut was made with Nintendo though, as his exploits suit both the Wii U and 3DS systems perfectly. Here is a new hero with old morals, and his game can proudly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the career highlights of Mario, Link and co.

It's clearly inspired by old school classics but instead of being derivative with a twist like so many others it uses them as a base to fly from, establishing a new experience that's just as evocative as those retro titles were to me when I was young. It's a fantastic title with tons of charm that showcases the potential of kickstarter and it's only getting better as the stretch goals are rolled out. Expand
