It partially saved the industry with the help of Duck Hunt. For nearly 4 decades now, Mario has kept his title as the video game king. That's certainly a great legacy for this game.
That doesn't mean it's just as great of a game itself.
Look, don't get me wrong, it's a good game, and I'll always respect it for how it reshaped games as we know it. but it has quite a number of problems.
First off, the level design. Hold it! I'm not hating on every level! A lot of these levels are very well designed! Except 2-3 and 7-3, I despise those levels. Speaking of 7-3, that's relative to my next point. There have been a few times where the developers got really lazy. They rehash some of the same levels again for a future world and add one little thing to make it only slightly harder. 5-3? Just 1-3 with Bullet Bills. 5-4? Just 2-4 with additional Fire-Bars and Podoboos. 6-4? Just 1-4 with, say it with me, additional enemy placement. Even the only two water levels are similar in structure! Not to mention that after you beat the main quest, you gain access to "hard mode." Why do I put that in quotations? Because it barely classifies as harder at all. Goombas are replaced with Buzzy Beetles, all enemies move slightly faster, and that's it. This game just gets so repetitive at times, and I don't recommend doing "hard mode" at all. It's just not that fun. I think the controls are pretty decent for the most part, though I think Mario can be a bit slippery at times, and this can make tight jumps tricky.
Graphically, this definitely was impressive for its time, but god have they aged poorly. (What do you expect, at the time I'm writing this, it came out 35 years ago) The music is either really good or really annoying. I love the Overworld and Underwater themes, but I don't like the Underground theme quite as much. I've always hated the Castle theme. Also, Nintendo, can you please stop bringing back these songs as much as you have? (I'm even getting tired of the good songs from this game)
I still consider this a good game. I think the concept of Super Mario Bros. was genius for its time, with all the power-ups, enemies, and all the other mechanics too. It's fun to pick up and play every once and a while. But seriously people, you need to think twice before giving it perfect scores all because of its legacy.
The legacy of Super Mario Bros. is fascinating and outstanding.
The actual game is not even close to that. It's not great, but still good enough.… Expand
