The truth is that Hudson's perennial classic is still best played in its original form without the associated fluff, so if you've held out for the last 27 years, perhaps it's time you succumbed to being continually blown into little chunks by your friends.

If you go into Battlefest with the right expectations, you won't be disappointed; it's nothing game-changing, but it's a good way to get together with friends for a night of downright charming competitive multiplayer.

Bomberman's newest Xbox Live Arcade game is hardly the revelation some were hoping for, but it's a solid multiplayer game nonetheless.

The core Bomberman gameplay remains as enjoyable as ever, but there's very little to set Battlefest apart from its predecessors.

However, Battlefest's plan to play it safe also limits it. No hint of a single-player campaign is included: you're either playing multiplayer matches with humans or simulating them. [March 2011, p.85]

The level design leaves a lot to be desired.

As good as ever, but no better.

A pleasant interface along with easy-to-learn, hard-to-master gameplay makes this game a splendid choice for both the casual gamers and the hardcore gamers alike. All of the gameplay mechanics are masterfully implemented, with many game-enriching options for both custom games and the game itself. Whether playing with friends or solo, this game promises at least twice the fun for its cost. I highly recommend this game for anyone who wants either a joyous game experience or a mind-provoking strategy game. Expand

As a long time casual Bomberman fan, when I heard about Bomberman Live: Battlefest I though "Pointless! No one can improve this formula!" BoyAs a long time casual Bomberman fan, when I heard about Bomberman Live: Battlefest I though "Pointless! No one can improve this formula!" Boy was I wrong! Bomberman Battlefest is seriously the best game on XBL, it's depth makes civilization seem like a pitiful flash game and it's pace makes Need For Speed seem like a gentlemanly stroll in the park.

Firstly, the developers have clearly completed a monumental overhaul of the networking system so, though the game may suffer from some lag in extreme cases, the games never mess up or have major bugs like in the last XBLA version. Secondly the additional game modes have genuinely added a tangible depth to the game play. Capture the flag mode is a triumph and is good for intense 2 on 2 matches. Bankroll mode is to Bomberman what counterstrike is to FPS games, and that's a really good thing. Thirdly the new arenas are superb and on the whole look great. The arenas all have a catch, in one, aztec blocks reshape the arena, and in another a pirate ship rocks sliding power ups and bombs around the deck. There's even an arena where there are tiles which redirect flames! Finally the new bombs are awesome! They have cluster bombs and rocket bombs which shoot off in the direction you place them, and these types of bombs and power ups interact really well.

Overall, if you haven't played bomberman before, there can't be a better introduction than Battlefest, and if you are a fan, you'll find this the most polished and feature rich bomberman yet!
