I'm going to give my honest review of this game and be as unbiased and honest as possible and cover as much as I can about Advanced Warfare.I'm going to give my honest review of this game and be as unbiased and honest as possible and cover as much as I can about Advanced Warfare. Just so you know, this is a review of MY experience on the 360 version of the game and not the next gen version even though they are about 95% the same.
.
Graphics/Performance: Graphics don't matter to me much, but since this is a cross-gen game, some people may want to know how it compares to the new gen. In my honest opinion, AW has what i would consider above average graphics and shows an improvement from Ghosts. Considering that it is running on the 360, it is actually extremely impressive to me. I'm not saying that this is an amazing looking game, but pretty good for 2014 especially on an old console. The cutscenes in the game look right next to real life and are pleasing to watch due to the motion capture used for it, but in gameplay there is a slight downgrade, but it still does look good for last gen's technology. While a few textures may look a little ugly at times, they aren't too bad, so I think that this was a good step forward in the graphics department. As far as performance goes, on the 360, this runs at a 720p at 60fps which isn't really bad compared to xbox one's 1360x1080 resolution and the ps4's 1080p, but it is slightly noticeable, but not a huge difference.
During the campaign, the framerate would dip at times, but not badly.
Campaign: It is what you would expect from a call of duty campaign, but the future setting felt so realistically created that I had to give props to sledgehammer. The way they imagine 40 years in the future had a great feel to it and I think it was so well done, that it felt different and more immersive than other CoD campaigns . The campaign also shows off the future pretty well and this makes for some pretty fun/interesting moments in gameplay. I would recommend that vets play on higher difficulties because the challenge adds to it well and the whole thing still is as short as you would expect, but I found the story pretty interesting, because it felt real. Also, the voice acting and performance of Troy Baker and Kevin Spacey were great.
Multiplayer: When this game was first revealed, everyone was very skeptical that the futuristic additions would drastically change the way the game played and would no longer be what made Call of Duty what it is. I was skeptical as well, but I when I actually play, the game feels like Call of Duty, yet it feels so different at the same time. You can expect the same game at it's core, which really isn't a bad thing, but the new exo-abilities encourages more tactics, skill and strategy than previous CoDs. I actually felt like I was playing a new game this time around, and I strongly believe this game will be superior to Ghosts in many ways. The pick 10 system from Black ops 2 is now Pick 13. This is due to classes now having their own scorestreaks which is something I've wanted for a long time. scoretreaks have been changed in 2 major ways in AW. The first one is the ability to upgrade them. You can make your scorestreaks stronger by making them cost points more points to earn. The next big addition is being able to use part your teammate's scorestreaks while they use another. Next is supply drops, which is pretty much a loot system that rewards you for playing. No more explanation needed. So far, finding games is, for the most part, quick and I haven't been thrown into games where i've been losing by a mile. Hit detection isn't bad, felt like between ghosts and bo2. AW multiplayer is very good in my opinion.
Exo-Survival: Nothing special. just survival with a hidden 2 minute round of zombies. Not worth buying the game for
Verdict: Even though I think this is one of the better Call of Duty's, I will give it an 8/10 because that does not mean it's amazing. It made the series feel fresh again and made great improvements and obviously benefited from the 3 year development, but in the end, it is just another Call of Duty. Most veterans probably won't be entertained by AW for too long, but I could be wrong. Even so, I hope the other developers see this games success and they try to improve the series even further and make Call of Duty a great series again.
Should You Buy?
If you want a change from the usual cod gameplay this is a good choice and I would recommend it if you have the money. If not, wait for a price drop, but keep the last CoD you liked because you will still want to play that one occasionally for the classic feel again.
Last Or New Gen?
It really isn't a drastic difference. Both Generations have the same content, and gameplay, and the graphics are very similar so don't be scared to use last gen! You are not missing out. The platform you choose depends on 3 questions: What are your friends on? Do you want the early Xbox DLC? Do I have a next gen console?
