  1. There is absolutely nothing in this industry that can compare to how weird and wonderful the whole experience is. Judged as a piece of entertainment, as a game that consistently surprises and amazes and leaves jaws hanging, I have no choice but to say that Deadly Premonition goes above and beyond. This game is so bad, it's not just become good. It's pretty close to perfect.
  2. What's important here is that the game has a superb story, excellent characters, and is a hell of a lot of fun. Access Games knocked one out of the park with Deadly Premonition.

It's a shame that so many gamers will never even hear about FBI Special Agent Francis York Morgan and the Raincoat Killer, because the game has so much to offer.
  4. With an intriguing murder mystery and a cast of locals that make the place seem like an open-air asylum, the game is enjoyable from start to finish despite the hassles of battle getting in the way all too often.

Forget the Dreamcast-era graphics and some clumsy mechanics (if you can) and lose yourself in this sick and perverse thriller. You will never forget it.
  6. If other games had the problems found in Deadly Premonition, they would be laughed off the 360 and into obscurity, but this game just has that staying power, that "je ne sais quoi" that makes you want to keep playing, to keep going forward, to keep unraveling the mystery, no matter how awful the controls and graphics.

Deadly Premonition is the unlikely meeting of Shenmue, Silent Hill and GTA, in a Twin Peaks setting... An unexpected mix that comes bundled with awful visuals and terribly old-school gameplay, but remains full of interesting things to discover. It mesmerizes the player thanks to a strange atmosphere, a compelling story, a cast of weird but terribly consistent characters, and a solid storytelling... In short, this is a unique gaming experience that will be be rewarding to players who can actually... endure it! See for yourself if you're ready to dismiss big (big) gameplay and visual shortcomings, to eventually discover a little shiny treasure... The cheap price (25 euros) may help you take that risk.

This ugly duckling, with elements of poor execution somehow manages to provide a captivating and distinctive experience. It shouldn't, but somehow it all comes together to deliver a gem of a game. Remarkable.

Like Twin Peaks, it's as full of as many happy accidents and surreal edges as it is well-engineered shocks and hilarious moments, and while it can't ever hope to match the impact of Lynch's classic, those who take the ride will be rewarded.

One of the most bizarre, yet enjoyable, games we've played in a long time. [Issue#65, p.87]

As unique a vision as video gaming has ever seen and one able to use even its many incompetencies to entertain and surprise.
  12. Dec 23, 2010
But if you have the stomach for the surreal and the patience to ride its flaws, there's much to appreciate.
  13. Dec 23, 2010
Yes, Deadly Premonition is flawed. It's unhelpful, outdated and highly irregular - and I should probably give it a lower mark, but I'm not going to. Instead I'm going to thank Rising Star for bringing this game to the UK, and I'm going to suggest that if you're even remotely curious, that you give it a pop.
  14. Deadly Premonition, while lacking in the aesthetic aspect, is a surprisingly entertaining game.

While you will unquestionably be embarrassed by the low budget visuals and wish the combat mechanics were tighter, you'll also experience some incredible moments that can't be found in any other videogame. [Issue#101, p.114]
  16. In spite of some broken gameplay, the characterizations, campy writing, and a driving need to find out what happens next make Deadly Premonition a title that transcends the definition of what a budget game should be. It's a sure-fire cult hit.
  17. It's incredibly flawed in areas that some consider core to the gaming experience and requires patience to persevere through the problems and get to the best moments. But for everything it lacks, it transcends the stigma of a budget title. If you're looking for a strange but nonetheless unique experience, Deadly Premonition may satisfy an itch you didn't even realize you had.

You may love or hate Deadly Premonition and its pure heart hidden beneath errors, strange structure and PlayStation 2 graphics. Don't get fooled by the outside, there are plenty of good things hidden beneath this rough surface.

Deadly Premonition is by no means a great game, at least in the traditional sense, but I'll be damned if I didn't enjoy every minute of my nearly 42 hours playing it. The setting and story might have a little too much in common with the early 1990s television series Twin Peaks, but the homage is done with love and admiration.
  20. Its production values are unquestionably budget, but the game's ambitious level of corny self-awareness makes it a stupidly affordable, must-have cult title for the adventurous set.

Brilliant bloodbath or bizarro bollocks? Both, actually. Terrible, superb and weird. [Nov 2010, p.90]

The beauty of Deadly Premonition is that it's a straightforward whodunnit viewed through the cracked prism of an unreliable narrator, conjuring an atmosphere of suspicion and confusion throughout. [Dec 2010, p.92]

It's as simple as this - you will either love or hate Deadly Premonition. If you're looking for a bizarre game that's so bad it's good, you've found your match. If you're not… well, keep looking.

It's an experience like no other, if not always for the right reasons. I adored it, but I couldn't tell you in earnest that you will feel the same. But I will tell you this: you absolutely must play it. How else would you ever know?
  25. 70
Fans of Twin Peaks and survival horror especially will find a lot to love in this flawed title.
  26. It looks ancient and controls poorly, but this entertaining and unpredictable horror adventure delivers more shocks than schlock.
  27. It's the Amy Winehouse of videogames: rambling and incoherent, a bit of a mess and not much to look at, but with a unique and distinctive voice that's very hard to ignore.
  28. If you demand polish, this-gen graphics, and spoonfed plots - well, maybe you need to move briskly along. [Issue#65, p.90]

Yes, some aspects are nowhere near where the bar has been set on current titles, but this game is something that is a truly unique experience as well as a love letter to fans of the survival horror genre. You really can't go wrong with picking this game up if you have the time to invest in it.
  30. Fans of survival horrors games and B Movies will be pleased with Deadly Premonition, despite the aesthetic aspect and poor gameplay. Actually, one of the strangest games in Xbox 360.
  31. If you're a fan of B-movies and want to invite a few friends over to create your own Mystery Science Theater 3000-style dialogue-or even if you're on solo mode looking for a great story at the cost of palatable gameplay-this is a one-of-a-kind title and you owe it to yourself to pick it up. At a retail price of $19.99, you can't beat Deadly Premonition's cheap laughs and unique story. But if you're looking for a straightforward, next-gen gaming experience, avoid this one at all costs.
  32. Jan 1, 2011
Deadly Premonition has developed something of a cult following, but for me the good bits were always overwhelmed by the bad.
  33. The problems are pronounced and obvious, but somehow it has a charm and appeal that defies logic. This game is not for everyone. In fact, it won't be for most people. But, at an amazing value of twenty dollars, it may be a worthy investment for those that are bored of their current slate of games and are ready to put up with the numerous frustrations to experience the inane charm that Deadly Premonition offers, but don't say I didn't warn you.
  34. Jan 25, 2011
Despite its strong charm, Deadly Premonition lacks in so many areas that it's hard to recommend it even to the more forgiving gamer.
  35. A larger budget might have saved the driving physics and improved the experience of the town, but no amount of money could repair the terrible writing and wrong-headed design that really sink Deadly Premonition.
  36. 40
Deadly Premonition lacks a lot of things to be a good game. It needs a well defined gameplay, good control and a better pace. Its technical flaws are even more obvious. But it hides something interesting in its story, its narrative and some loose ideas spread through its design.
  37. Deadly Premonition is brave, maybe even heroic, but in the end is also a bad game... a horrible game to be honest. The bizarre story and its sandbox possibilities can't put out of sight its awkward gameplay concepts and embarrassing controls.
  38. 20
Awful in nearly every way. The Twin Peaks meets Resident Evil with a dash of Grand Theft Auto formula sounds pretty great, but it was well beyond the capabilities of this development team. Terrible controls. Terrible pacing. Terrible sound effects. Terrible visuals.

Even leaving aside the value proposition (it's only $20), Deadly Premonition offers an interesting setting and bizzare characters. The catch is that to enjoy what this game has to offer, you have to suspend your disbelief, and possibly your good taste. This is a goofy survival horror romp through a japanese version of Twin Peaks, and while the payoff is immense, getting there can sometimes be a bit of a slog. Full Review »
