OK, so this is not a game, this is a demo at best. Don't spend any money on this. The game itself is good while it lasts, but I just still can't wrap my mind around the plain arrogance of releasing this one as a game, in a box. I really hope Konami will hurt itself with this move, and the sales of phantom pain will suffer, so this won't become a thing in the gaming industry.

'Demo' has no qualification for 'Critic Score'.

I'll just wait for 'full retail game'.
and then, write review that 'full retail game' for critic score.
So I have no criticism for 'this demo'.

The gameplay is good as you would expected from a metal gear. but asking for $30,00 to a demo is a shame to konami who just want to cash in with their loyal fanbase, i advise to stay out of this game, it should be free, this is damaging the gaming industry, gamers do not buy this game.

I made this account solely for the purpose of expressing my disappointment towards Kojima/KONAMI's attempted rip-off and franchise milking.

It's really a shame that such a credible developer/publisher tried to take advantage of the game's hype and fanbase (which gets smaller by the day) to make an easy cash-in...
And for those of you that are saying: "Blah blah blah, they warned people that the main mission was only about 2 hours long so if you don't like it don't buy it" , let me tell you something, have you heard of a game called "Dead Rising 2: Case Zero"? It was a prequel to Dead Rising 2, just like Ground Zeroes. The only differences were the price (it cost 5$ instead of 30$), the content (it was longer and less buggy) and the people behind it; I mean, you could maybe expect a rip-off from the Dead Rising franchise but from the Metal Gear franchise? No way, that was too ridiculously greedy.
SHAME ON YOU KONAMI... I just hope this doesn't sell well and other publishers start doing it, although for 30$ they don't need to sell that much to have a good profit.
First it was Rockstar's constant attempts at milking more money out of what already is the best selling franchise ever, and now this? What was a respectful and trusted company is now turning into EA.
They can pull off these "scams" and keep getting good revenues, but it's companies like Valve that don't need to worry about cashing-in easily and still have some of the best-selling franchises ever, due to the simple fact that they care about their consumers.

This game was a MASSIVE dissappointment. I was having fun and i was like YEAAAAH ON TO MISSION TWO and then NOPE. HERES SOME DISGUSTING CUTSCENES AND SOME CREEEEDITTTS. No mission two. Nothing added to the story. A full-price game for ONE MISSION. SCREW THAT! IT WOULDVE BEEN GREAT IF NOT FOR ONLY HAVING ONE FREAKING MISSION (Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing / 10)

I've changed my mind after about week of playing this I find it hard to say its not worth $20. Be warned though; this is not a good buy for someone who isn't a hardcore stealth fan. I found further value in this games replay-ability. With +20 hours of messing around I can't complain.

I am behind a bit on the Metal Gear games as I just finished Peace Walker recently. MGS1 and 3 are my favorites overall, but I dove right into Ground Zeroes because I heard it followed Peace Walker directly. I downloaded it for $20.00 on XBLA and I thought this price was high to be honest, but there is a good amount of side mission content and I have to say the gameplay is so tight that I have replayed the main mission several times and have found different approaches to be fun...for example finding charges and a shotgun in the armory and having a loud approach instead of stealthing my way through.

I found that the tension level is crazy in this game. I love the binoculars and tagging system overall. Also, the reaction mechanism is nice for a less skilled stealth player as myself. I admit whenever I play MGS I have had my share of running away as I got spotted. The game is great to play and looks awesome, even on 360 in my opinion. It is an indicator of the greatness that I feel is the Phantom Pain to come. I plan on grabbing a PS3 solely to catch up on MGS 4...the hardware has been my only hold back.

I know this release has been getting mixed views, but I think Kojima succeeded in giving his audience a stealth playground. If every mission in Phantom Pain plays this way I am beyond excited to get a hold of it.

In the end it comes down to your opinion, but I say this is game is worth your time.

Now that that's out of the way, let me explain the game. Metal Gear Solid 5 has taken a page out of Far Cry 3's book and has made a somewhat open world stealth game, complete with tagging enemies. While this works for the most part, when AI is left to roam in a base, naturally, you're going to get seen by accident by someone who turned a corner at the wrong time. MGS5 attempts to fix this problem by adding the "Reflex System". Essentially, when seen, you have about 5 seconds of slowed time to kill or knock out the offending person before he manages to shout for help.

This issue here is that you don't always have the ability to control this. All bullets have drop (including your tranq pistol that all MGS fans will know from memory), so aiming at anyone more than ten feet away is annoying and unreliable. On top of this, shooting enemies with the tranq pistol doesn't seem to affect them nearly as much as in any other MGS game. It one point, it took FIVE shots to the chest to incapacitate a guard. Realistic? Maybe. However, MGS rules have always shown that one dart can knock a guard out, it just takes a few seconds. If this is true, then it takes entirely too long for this particular affect to work.

Knocking enemies out as opposed to tranquilizing them seems to have been nerfed. In all of the other MGS games, there was a loading screen between every level. Therefore, if you were moving quickly, knocking guards out in close combat or with sleeper holds was an economical alternative to tranquilizing them with a finite amount of darts. However, because the game no longer has loading screens, knocking guards out seems to cause more harm than good. They get up after only a few minutes at most (and the main mission took me about an hour to get through). When they get up an alert is sounded instantly, for obvious reasons.

This leads to another change that I dislike: the entire Alert system of MGS has been altered. Rather than the Caution (enemies are scared, but aren't sure if you're even there), Evasion (Enemies know you're there and are actively trying to find you) and Alert (you have been seen and are under fire), now there is Caution, Combat, and Alert. Alert has essentially taken the place of Evasion, which was never properly explained to me. Also, this is no longer expressed by color or by a HUD element, but is given by a small subtitle at the bottom of the screen with no timer, meaning that strategizing around your Alert ending is difficult. Combine this with longer enemy sight lines and reflex mode that seems to be actively attempting to infuriate you at times, and you have a recipe for "are you freaking serious" moments.

The game also has added a positively infuriating rating system at the end of each mission, that confused me more than it improved my experience. I managed to sneak through a level, killing no one, never raising an alarm, and performing every single side objective, and it gave me a B ranking. Meanwhile, my friend, who had never played it, killed every single enemy he saw with an unsilenced rifle for an identical ranking. Your rank also goes down if you ever go back to a checkpoint for any reason. On top of this, the game makes you unlock more missions by performing well in previous ones. For a game as short as this to lock out content in such an aggravating way is ridiculous and should have never made it passed the drawing board. I'm all for ranking system in games, but this game seems to go out of its way to irritate and frustrate, and I hope that it doesn't make it into Phantom Pain.

Now the game isn't all bad! Not by any means! The graphics are awesome, the writing is good (if a bit goofy, but it's also Japanese), grabbing enemies now gives instructions on how to perform actions (as opposed to MGS3 and MGS4, where performing CQC, cutting throats, interrogation, etc, were never explained and required memorization for their somewhat complex inputs), performing complicated plans such as hiding in the bed of a truck to sneak into an area you want to go to is freeform and feels amazing when you pull it off, and the controls are...serviceable, let's say.

If it wasn't for the mostly-open map, adherence to realism, insulting ranking system, and reuse of content, Ground Zeroes would have been excellent. However, it's only about 5-8 hours total, and only about half of the missions are even fun, for various reasons such as "destroy the tank, but we won't tell you where the explosives are". If you want to wet your whistle for Phantom Pain, I can recommend it. However, some of you aren't going to like the changes, for sure.

Wait for a sale before you buy, and try to keep an open mind.

It is more fun to stealth through however. These missions are also highly re-playable with a different experience each time you play. Despite the fact that this game is essentially an appetizer to the main course, this is a really delicious appetizer that makes me even more pumped for the main course. It's been a while since a game has left me this conflicted. On the one-hand, it's a mean-spirited move to charge £25-ish for what really should be a pre-order bonus for The Phantom Pain, and on the other, I can't deny I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. The controls are much smoother, the graphics held up well on my Xbox 360 and the attention detail with the sound is genuinely impressive. IIt's been a while since a game has left me this conflicted. I finished the main 'mission' feeling that series is going in the right direction again (MGS IV was all over the place imo) and was encouraged by the more sophisticated tone/mood of the small story contained within it.

Apart from the price/length, the only thing that irked me was a cut-scene that is trying to be quite shocking and just comes off as being a bit gross. Even slightly funny if you've seen a certain animated tv show. ;D

Hard more is very challenging and gives the game lots of replay value. For some people, the game might be boring or short, but I think true Metal Gear Solid fans will appreciate what GZ and how it leaves you waiting for the PP. And there are lots of hidden stuff, like the cassettes or the emblems, it might be short in its main mission, but the extras make it worth

    The good:

Amazing graphics engine, for current gen looks to good, lighting at night is spectacular.
    Deep infiltration choices.
Hard more, very challenging for purists.
Great immersion, voice acting and lore.
Can use any vehicle and drive anywhere in the base.
Lots of hidden weapons in the map.
More mature approach that older MGS titles give the game a feeling of seriousness and cruelty.

    The bad:

    Main mission could be longer.
Missions in other type of maps are needed.
2 missions are rather dull and replaceable for something more appealing, one of them being Raiden mission.
More cut scenes would have been awesome.
An small online mode with a few modes and to be able to choose more characters would have been amazing.
Not the best soundtrack. Where is "Not Your Kind of People" or "Sins Of The Father"?
