  1. It may be a gaming classic, but the modern enhancements bring it bang up-to-date with splendid visuals and a fast unforgiving gameplay that shouldn't be missed.

This game is a brainless shooter that has almost no depth. There haven't been to many improvements over the first game but the results look promising. The multiplayer modes are pretty good and it's one of the main reasons why you might want to play this game.
  3. Serious Sam returns with another great HD remake of a gonzo shooter classic, this time on XBLA.
  4. Serious Sam: The Second Encounter HD is a fun and ridiculous battle through hordes of enemies.

The Second Encounter is by far the most frenetic first-person game we've played in a while. [Issue#66, p.102]

To those who have not tried this series or something similar before, it is a good chance for a different approach to FPS games. Direct action without automatic healing and a high difficulty level only for the brave.

Suffers from ancient game design. If you enjoy mindlessly mowing down hordes of enemies level after level then Sam may be right for you. There is nothing mechanically broken per se, but the tedium will wear on gamers accustomed to epic events and intelligent AI.
  8. With multiple game modes, there's plenty of content here to keep old-school gamers busy for hours on end.

But if you're looking for $15 of gory, mindless fun, this is your game. I agree that linear, simple to a fault and as subtle as a brick wall, but it has good graphics, varied weapons/enemies and enough blood to fill the Gulf o Mexico. It looses points for lacking an autosave function competitive multiplayer that is anything more than an afterthought. But moderate gripes aside, this game is still a better value than 80% of the junk in Xbox Live Arcade. Full Review »
