An engaging universe, decent back story, and being able to shoot Nazis in the face makes this a joy to play. With only 11 levels it isn’t the longest experience in the world, but if you are looking for an easy gateway into the strategy game world, this could well be the one you need.

Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics achieves much of what it sets out to accomplish. Whilst the game excels as far as accessibility is concerned, those that relish an in-depth turn-based strategy game may be disheartened by the simplicity on show here. That said, and despite its recycled level design and its grind-like reward system, there’s a fairly compelling experience within that does more things right than it does wrong.

The added atmospheric and thematic elements of the Cthulhu lore can be entertaining, though the game lacks in depth story, but the chance at fighting such diverse creatures as are presented should be a plus for any Lovecraft fan.

Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics fails to deliver an exciting tactical experience due to an uninspired design and bland story, coupled with some enemy AI problems. The turn-based gameplay is ok, but it ends up being a too basic tactical game, underwhelming both for Cthulhu myths and strategy games lovers.

There’s absolutely no variety, not even when the lurking horrors start to crawl in and the characters are taken into a dream world once in a while. They, too, play out painfully similar to everything else in the game. As a reviewer, I’m obliged to play games throughout so that I can give an objective view of them. But I have a hunch that if I had purchased Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics for my own pleasure, I would have played it only for a couple of missions and then moved onto something more exciting. When the Cthulhu mythos is left largely untapped in the tepid action, the game is yet another addition to the long list of unsatisfactory takes on the subject.

The game is slow moving, bland at times, and a bit forgettable. It’s unfortunate that its best moments are towards the end of the game because most players won’t make it that far.

This is a game with no personality despite a can't-go-wrong premise of Nazis and monsters. This is a game with poor design, little depth and artificial intelligence so catastrophically bad that it is inexcusable. I love the genre, but I couldn't recommend this title to anyone.

The presentation side of the game surprised me quite a bit because I didn’t expect there to be as much detail as there was in both the visuals and sound design. The story was minimalistic while in some areas I actually found what were available to me to be very well written and ultimately interesting. Strategy plays a big part in this game and I was pleased with how intricate certain strategy elements were. Unfortunately the game lacks in several areas when it comes to variety and this does mean that the game does get repetitive rather quickly. You can’t really explore in the game which means the levels feel a little underdeveloped. I found the RPG aspects to be a little basic and there wasn’t much that stood out here and what it did have has been seen many times before. The World War II and Nazi setting has been done a lot in recent times but for some reason the historian in me comes rushing to the surface and I always look forward to a game that features these settings. Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics features this setting but it puts a bit of a unique spin on things, and whilst it isn’t perfect it does get more things right than it gets wrong. One of the main things this game gets right is definitely the combat because there’s quite a lot of depth present and this does make the combat rewarding in pretty much all areas. Obviously the combat wouldn’t be as good if it didn’t feature a decent strategic side to things and thankfully I’m pleased to say that they’ve got the strategy elements spot on. In terms of problems the game has a few underlying issues and for me the biggest problem was that it lacked in terms of variety. There’s several areas where this game doesn’t have much in terms of variety and when you combine that with the lack of exploration available to you things can start to get repetetive quite quickly. Despite this though Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics offers you a decent and enjoyable experience that features a few excitement moments along the way, and at the end of the day that’s enough to receive a thumbs up from me. Expand

Expand
