It takes just a couple of hours to play through Adios, but it’s an experience that’ll sit with you for far longer. It’s a haunting story about redemption and finding meaning in life, but one that eschews the bombast with which videogames typically approach such themes in favour of something far more grounded—and far more impactful, as a result. Going through your daily routine one last time, when you know you’re not going to see the sun rise the next morning, can be a powerful source of reflection, and Adios does an impressive job of capturing that.

After playing Adios I felt like I did when I first saw No country for old men, and I can’t imagine a greater compliment. Graphics are definitely not its strongest suit, but they do a decent job at supporting Adios’ touching story, that shines thanks to its fantastic voice acting. A couple simple minigames add a little variety to this walking simulator. All in all, Adios lasts a little more than an hour, but it’s an hour that is totally worth experiencing.

I’ve found Adios on Xbox to be moving and profound. If you are a fan of games like Everyone's Gone to Rapture or Firewatch then I think this is probably up there as a must-buy game. But on the other side of the coin, if you are not one who is particularly interested in narrative or storytelling, preferring gameplay to run your games, then you may well have a bit of an issue with what it delivers.

Thankfully the slow, narrative focus of Adios means these issues shouldn’t get in the way of what matters; the thoughtful story and the melancholy atmosphere. If you want a refreshing perspective on the kinds of stories games can tell and how they tell them, Adios is well worth your time.

Adios’ fantastic, profound narrative offers an interesting glimpse from a rarely-covered perspective. It’s only elevated by a pair of fantastic performances from its leading cast members, that lend an authentic feel to the tale. While the superficial gameplay may not be to everybody’s tastes, if you’re looking for a short and bittersweet story, Adios is a solid choice.

“Embrace death.” Despite a very short lifespan and few scenes of actual gameplay, Adios has enough qualities to impact players who will give it a go. Thanks to incredibly well-written dialogues and interesting choices as regards the aesthetic, Mischief’s walking simulator conveys gorgeous feelings. A great sense of sadness can be felt in game and it contrasts with a great and palpable uneasiness. Simultaneously touching and disturbing, this story about a man dedicated to regaining control of his own destiny can be appreciated like a great movie. Inspired by the movie industry to be a work of art on its own, this title exudes love and regret and addresses life and death issues: the story of a man finally at peace with himself. Adios.

Effectively a master class in narrative design and making the player care about the player character. Also has a fishing minigame. 10/10

Great game with a great story. I can see a lot of effort was invested and it paid off.

It was a great game and I enjoyed playing it. The developer has room for improvement, but with feedback and experience comes greatness and I look forward to their next project.

I wish I could have the time I wasted on this game back. The whole thing is a narrative mess.

Terrible game. It's basically a glorified audiobook with some of the worst writing I've seen. Avoid.
