It’s strange to have seen the tennis video game scene left to die in recent years, but Big Ant have proven that there is still plenty of love for the sport. You may find the lack of licensing an issue, but if you love Rafa Nadal, and enjoy a couple of games of tennis, then all is good in the world of AO International Tennis.

While playing AO International Tennis, I found everything from the tutorial to the actual in-game experience to be pretty good. Sure, I wasn't the greatest at becoming the next Rafael Nadal, but the experience was something I enjoyed as I played. That being said, fans may find some control issue here and there, as I did find that some of my shots didn't go where I aimed, and that reaction time was off now and then. Regardless, I have never been one to pick a sports game as my game of choice, let alone tennis, but you may want to consider this one, especially if you are craving some tennis on your Xbox One.

The mix of solid arcade play and deeper-deluxe sports sim should please tennis fans. [Aug 2018, p.84]

AO International Tennis is an interesting videogame for tennis fans, the game has a nice gameplay but includes a poor rooster of professional players and a few game modes.

AO International Tennis brings some good ideas and gameplay mechanics to the table, but it's too much focused on shots timing to the detriment of other elements like player movement and placement. And its poor graphics and lack of licensed players are simply inexcusable. We'd love to see Big Ant Studios building on it for a better game next year, though.

AO Tennis suffers from a poorly-designed AI and a lack of depth in all that it has to offer. Easy to play but not difficult to master, it may please tennis fans looking for a game they can sometimes play with their friends.

The gameplay lacks finesse and refinement, serving up frustration in place of fluidity. Tennis is a game of endurance, precision and energy, three elements that AO International Tennis fails to deliver. With that in mind, its abundance of content means very little.

This is *not* an easy, nor accessible tennis game. And that's what's beautiful about it. It takes time to learn, and it punishes lapses in judgement or mistakes. But once you've put the practice in, it feels amazing to pull of a stylish serve/volley, or hit a cracking winner from the baseline. And taking 10, 15, or even more shots in a rally to really position yourself and your opponent is tactical and enjoyable.

It's a very different approach to tennis games compared to what we've seen historically, and I like it.

Customisation options are excellent, compensating the lack of official players by allowing you to download hundreds of player made unofficial ones. Expand

The first one to release actually came out in Australia a few months ago but the rest of the world had to wait for AO International Tennis. Was the game worth the wait? Unfortunately on the whole it wasn’t worth the wait and despite having a few good things going for it AO International Tennis unfortunately has got more things wrong than its got right. The gameplay that’s present has good things and bad things going for it but in the end the bad things stand out more. The controls in the game harm the fun factor quite considerably and that’s mainly because they’ve made certain shots very difficult to pull off because they’ve made them too complicated. This is a shame because when playing the AI on the high difficulty settings you do have a fun and challenging time, at least until the problems take over. One of the biggest problems I found with the game is that your shots don’t always register and sometimes when the shots do register they aren’t the shots you played for, which can be very frustrating. If that wasn’t bad enough you also have to deal with a few technichal issues and without a doubt these issues harm the immersion levels quite a bit. There is however quite a lot of content for you to get to grips with and without a doubt the best thing about this game is its character creator. The character creator has a lot of depth to it and I must admit that I did have some fun doing this. Unfortunately though not all the content is great and I especially found this to be the case when it came to the game’s Career Mode. The Career Mode is just too basic and it doesn’t really give you a reason to continue playing and not only that there isn’t enough real-life tennis players to make this mode worthwhile, which is a shame. One of my favourite things about the game was the presentation side of things. I was very impressed with the visuals and sound design in the game and in my opinion they’ve done a very good job of capturing the atmosphere and feel of the tennis formula. At the end of the day I appreciate some of the effort that has gone into AO International Tennis and I so wanted to love the game more, but unfortunately I just couldn’t because it just has too much wrong with it. Fans of tennis games will definitely find the problems to be very off-putting and this does harm the game’s potential and when it’s all said and done it just doesn’t do enough to get a thumbs up from me.
