Had Climax been able to condense the best parts of all three games - China's pared-down and accessible design, India's looks, Russia's two-character dynamic - into one, we might've had a valuable offshoot, but ultimately this is another Assassin's Creed that succumbs to inconsistency and bloat. A spin-off of the main Assassin's Creed series that consists of three games each consisting of their own characters, setting, and art style.A spin-off of the main Assassin's Creed series that consists of three games each consisting of their own characters, setting, and art style. The Chronicles sub-series moves away from the open-world gameplay one would expect from an AC game in favor of 2.5D platforming. It's pretty impressive to see just how well the core tenants, such as the parkour climbing system, transfer over into this entirely different genre.

The story starts off with Shao Jun in China. Her revenge story isn't all that interesting, but the gameplay in this title makes it the best of the trilogy. It has the most well-rounded difficulty, multiple branching paths, and it is really the only one where combat feels like a viable option. The only area where it lags behind the other two is in it's graphics. The water color aren't style isn't allowed to flourish due to an overreliance on dull colors. In my individual review for the game I gave it a 9/10.

The second chapter is India. It's the weakest of the bunch in everything except graphics. My word is it BEAUTIFUL! The art style is stunning and it's one of the best looking games ever created. The gameplay is still solid all the way through, but suffers from taking a linear approach that fills the stages with cheap instant kills. The story is nothing to speak of as the protagonist is a lame Ezio rip-off. I gave this one a 7.5/10.

The final title in the package is Russia and it's easily the most challenging of the three. It's also the only one where I was interested in seeing what going on in those cutscenes. It's going to demand a lot of you to get through it at times, but it rarely feels cheap. The chase sequences can be brutal, but those who stick with it will be rewarded with a decent conclusion to the side-series. It was an 8/10 for me.

While there are inconsistencies across all three games, I ultimately found Chronicles to be a worthy spin-off. If you're an Assassin's Creed fan who wants to try something a little different for the series then I recommend taking a look at this trilogy as a lot the mechanics you would expect are still present. Even if you've never experienced the franchise before the stealth-based, Mark of the Ninja gameplay can be very satisfying.

8.2/10 (based on an average of my individual scores given to each of the three games)
