A brilliantly realized, brutal and bloody Metroidvania that is the next best thing to reading up on Catholic Martyrs while you whip yourself with a barbed cat-o-nine-tails.

Blasphemous is hands down one of my favourite games of 2019. I wasn’t expecting it to be, but it’s one of those unexpected surprises; a gift that you didn’t think that you wanted but quickly becomes to be loved.

Blasphemous treats the player mercilessly, but it's solid controls and mechanics, in addition to it's absolutely stunning aesthetics and complex and vast lore turns the game into fascinating (yet not flawless) experience.

Blasphemous may not have the best combat, but its intriguing premise and visuals elevate it.

Just one more Metroidvania? Not really. Blasphemous has its own thing, with its grim, gloomy atmosphere and tight combats. We could have used some more save points though.

Praise be to Blasphemous, for it’s an impressive game that has truly joined together the peanut-butter-and-chocolate-style union that is souls-likes and metroidvania games. While certain levels and enemies could benefit from a bit more polish, the end result is still a sinful delight filled with heavily-enjoyable combat, tons of areas to explore and secrets to uncover, and some jaw-dropping (if brutal) sights. It may be a game filled with countless unholy terrors, but it also oddly has a lot of love put into it as well, so don’t miss out on it (if you don’t mind the occasional nightmare).

Blasphemous is an absolutely stunning game everyone should see in motion. I loved it for the first 10 or so hours, but then it just continues to stay the course throughout. With a little more variety this could have been a true classic. Still this developer has some talent and I would love a follow-up with a little more flavor and a lot less bulk. On a purely visual scale this game has few equals and for that I can recommend it easily, just be aware that not much changes as far as game play goes throughout the entire journey.

The sprite artwork is absolutely amazing, and the art direction is very unique indeed. I can't think of any other game that borrows on the catholic themes and images and imagination in the game. The music is also very nice score which accompanies your journey to the tone of perfection. In some ways the music score even compliments the world to utter perfection at times. The gameplay is overly fun, even if a if a tad on the basic side. The combat consists of parrying enemies and occasionally using some questionably useful magic attacks to defeat your foes. You can unlock special moves along the way as well, but I rarely found a use for the special moves although they did look nice. There's also a lot of platforming, which is probably where you're going to die the most. Most bosses are tough, but don't fell cheap, and there is a checkpoint just before each one, so complaints there. While there aren't any major flaws apart from some bugs, I do have some gripes with the game. Firstly, there aren't enough fast travel locations in the world, and you're gonna be doing a ton of backtracking if you want to 100% the game. If you're going for 100% you're gonna have a frustrating experience, since there is no way to quickly check certain collectibles, and the map is incredibly basic without any option to leave markers or waypoints to help you along your journey, But overall I truly enjoyed my time with Blasphermous and I can only hope were to see more DLC for this Xbox gem in the future. Colorful pixel art, lots of detail. Grim atmosphere. Competent Metroidvania. Much text, much to investigate. The progression of the Griever is felt as you equip new items. It has an expansion that expands the adventure.

    The bad:
The map is not descriptive (one box does not represent the entire room). high difficulty. Enemies and traps are strategically placed to test your patience. Questionable connectivity. cryptic messages. Mission system not clear (it will make you lose things). It's very gore and scatological. Lots of text (will tell the story through items). Few skill slots.

    Lo Meh!:
Be patient or you will repeat it over and over again. There's a special place in hades for creatives who put laser-firing enemies without cold down in games of swords and shields. Don't eat while you play

It offers nothing new to the 2D Souls-Borne nor the Metroidvania style game, on top of having some irredeemably terrible controls and platforming mechanics.

It's Blasphemous that this is a game that exists.
