Repetitive Grind Fest
Battle crashers is a side scrolling brawler game featuring 6 different cartoon network show worlds and characters. You have Clarence from clarance, Jake and Finn from Adventure Times, Gumball from the amazing world of Gumball, Rigby and mordecai from the regular show, Steven from Steven universe, and finally the cause of all of this Uncle Grandpa from Uncle Grandpa…
You can play this game with 4 player cop, locally.. Not online... and each of these 6 characters are unlocked as you play the story... 4 of them being unlocked in the tutorial level, the other 2 later on and they all feel unique from each other..
Some noticeable weaker and frustrating to play as…
The concept of the game is simple... kill everything on the screen and collect gems to level up your character… much like that ghostbusters game from earlier this year… thankfully this game is better than that game, but it has many of the same issues…
There’s a large focus on grind here…
This game consists of 18 levels… 6 of those levels being boss battles that take about 3 minutes to complete… The boss battles feature villains from the shows and are a decent change of a pace from the combat… but is just your basic dodge attacks and hit when they’re vulnerable bosses…
The other 12 levels take anywhere from 6 to 9 min to complete... so for fun let’s just say on average this game if it were straight forward would take a little under 2 hours to complete…. Considering the type of game this is... multiplayer focused... the fact that there are 4 difficulties to unlock… throw in a dash of story... some satisfying and fun to play through levels and you have yourself a worthwhile game…
This isn’t what we get though…
A run through this games campaign is going to take you around 5 hours playing alone…
Enemies in this game take way too much damage and dealing with waves upon waves gets exhausting after an admittedly enjoyable first hour…
But nothing changes as you progress… what you see in the first levels is what you see in the other 12 minus a theme and an occasional gimmick like antigravity in one of the levels…
And to make it worse, this game forces you to replay levels you already completed to get an item to progress… this time with even more enemies to drag the game out… and before the final boss you have to replay 4 of those levels for shards… and before a regular boss you have to replay 2 levels .. Literally almost completely doubling the amount of levels here by forcing repeats... When again there’s plenty potential here on its own to get players to choose to replay levels... 3 extra difficulties that have to be unlocked by beating the level on the difficulties before… an xp system to get us to build on our favorite characters stats and working to unlock even more special moves to maybe alter each character to your own personal playstyle…
But the developers of this game opted out and chose game length over game quality…
The grind of having to kill the same enemies that take way to much damage to defeat is ultimately what hurts this game the most.. Even more than the forced replay…
If you don’t plan on playing couch co cop, there’s no reason to touch this one…
I give Cartoon Network Battle Crashers
a 5/10… Expand
