The first season can be cleared pretty quickly if you just do what is required of you, but if you take the time to search things out and read all the clues then you'll get much more of an experience from it. Even taking the quick route, this game is fun and does have some good mystery elements. At times it can be so overly quirky that it's painful but it just adds to the screwball cast of the mystery. After downloading this game at no cost I can't say that I have any complaints other than a few random graphical issues here and there. There is a lot of content here to find and unlock which really does give you more of an urge to replay the first episodes which in turn you have you finding and seeing things that you didn't catch the first time. A game I highly recommend to fans of 'Catherine' or even the quirkiness of 'Resident Evil: Revelations', because this is how the mood and characters of D4 feel. Fun while it lasts, but not a huge amount of replay in this first season (prologue and 2 episodes) and defiantly has you eagerly waiting for the sequel. Expand

Imagine if Heavy Rain and Telltale games made love while on a bunch of acid. This is that game is their baby.

It has a unique art style very much in the vein of a graphic novel. It has many of the same interaction types as Heavy Rain and a super trippy and weird story. It is unique and has so much **** crazy stuff happening I don't know where to start.

This game was super unique and I really did enjoy it the whole way through. In a sea of ultra generic nonsense, D4 really stands out as a game that pulls as far away as it can from conventional gameplay, conventional storytelling, and conventional sanity in general.

I can only hope that the game garners enough attention to warrant a sequel.

I would urge anyone who has played Deadly Premonition or The Walking Dead/Wolf Among Us series to download this little gem from the weird and wonderful SWERY...In a gaming world full of drab and dreary plot lines, this man knows how to bring them to life with yet another cast of wonderfully eccentric characters.

The presentation and controls are very slick too, those of us that played Deadly Premonition know what a pain movement was in that game but access have nailed the look and feel of the game, with quick time events which don't interrupt the flow of the game and actually have somewhat of a challenge to them.

Only a couple of negatives really, the pacing at times isn't great due to some overly long mini-games and at £11.99 it's not the greatest value for money given there's maybe 5-6 hours of gameplay if you're not going to repeat it.

However, with episodic gaming the measure of success is whether or not you leave the player wanting more after each episode, and I can say I can't wait to see what SWERY has to offer us in the forthcoming episodes.

First things first, If you don't like games which:1. similar to deadly premonition, phoenix wright,or movies like naked gun, airplane(where weird random stuff, characters keep happening to a ridiculous level of stupidity and quirkiness) therefore you gotta be open minded to a certain degree 2. Does not have high production value, amazing graphics 3. just in it for the gameplay, and rush through things without exploring the lores in the games, 4. does not like murder-mystery dialogue and story heavy games with few gameplay then sadly this is not gonna be your cup of tea.
The game was made by access games with Swery65 as the director, and will last you minimum 6 hours if you try to finish all the sidequests, read through every article or letter collectibles in the game, and interact with characters at different points throughout season 1. It's 15 dollars for this season 1 of the game which consists of prologue, episode 1, and episode 2. But believe it or not the kinect actions responds quite well and makes this game more unique to play, although you can also opt to play with the controller if you like.
For the gameplay it's a mix blend of point and click adventure style, and QTEs similar to say phoenix wright investigation mode, and heavy rain like QTE. When you hover over an object of interest it will show you interesting tidbits and info regarding the objects past which enrich the world of the game, furthermore if you interact with the objects which will have different things to tell you at different points of times in the game (a single bottle of ahave tequila will have lots to tell if you interact with it in prologue, episode 1, and 2). The QTEs are mostly done by holding your analog sticks to certain directions followed by a button prompt, and let me tell you this game has one of the most over the top, and fun to watch QTEs in any game ever that I've played. You have mainly 3 attributes: Stamina (which decreases every time you interact with Objects and people; vision meter highlights interactable objects and decreases over time if used 3. Health which may be lost if you fail QTEs or made a bad choice interacting with stuff.
Sidequests are given by the cast of quirky characters in the form of random trivias, dialogue options you have to choose correctly, etc. Which after completed, rewards you with credits (can be used to by stuff like food, costumes, and gifts), buffs for attributes, costumes, and backstory.
The soundtrack of the game is phenomenal with the noir styled jazz theme, to a rock celctic scandinavian track which plays during intense QTE **** Sound effects are not as quirky as the one in deadly premonition but still unique and amusing. Some of the characters have good voice acting, while the rest have what you might call good bad voice actin(it's awkward that it's pretty damn funny)
The story for the most part is about a detective named David young who has the power of diving into the past using objects called as mementos to search for his wive's killer. While this may seem simple but, as what you would expect out of the mind of Swery65 is filled with amusing weird quirky characters( there's one fashion designer guy who has a towerlike green hair who always bring a mannequin he carries around whom he calls his "partner"); plot twists which keeps you hooked and wanting to play the next episode and reach out to the truth; and while the characters are unlikely in their behaviours but they are believable in terms of emotions and you even feel for the some characters as their past and backstory gets revealed. You can use logic up till a certain degree to understand the mystery and create theories but as It's a swery game don't think to hardly on it. The story will have some ridiculous revelatory moments (episode 2 ending cliffhanger) but overall it's a fun filled fresh experience, although I would've liked to believe that swery didn't ripoff but used the movie 'Memento', and game 'D' 's story as an homage.
When it comes down to the negative points: 1. the quirkiness would prove to be a double-edged sword as it might drive away some people as it even gets weirder than even deadly premonition 2. the interaction menu are a bit clunky 3. you have to backtrack to your closet every time to change your clothes, and to your apartment for certain sidequests 4. the stamina runs out quickly at some points which detracts from the game a bit(you have a travelling cat vendor tho).
Overall it's a game which has interesting story, quirky characters with good backstory, amazing soundtrack, simple and amusing gameplay, rich extra content which enrich the world, lengthy for those willing to explore and a bang for your buck. I honestly prefer this over deadly premonition because it's faster paced, none of the forced shooting and driving gameplay bull****, and a bit more original than deadly premonition. 8.5, can't wait for S2!!

The Gameplay is very much in a The Walking Dead/The Wolf Among Us kind of point and click but more detailed, more stuff to point and click at, and most of them have something funny about it. Some QTE's that are in a Heavy Rain style fight scenes mixed with anime over the top action, here the Kinect really shines, it's very responsive.
You can either grab a character to talk to them, granting you mini cases or you can push them (both achieved by doing a hand motion) and get credits. Credits can be used to buy clothing, food for Stamina, health from medicine and vision recovery (the games Eagle Vision or Listening) all of which are essential to do well.
Stamina is drained with almost any action and can only be recovered by eating stuff you find or buying food from a time travelling cat (Yeah). When stamina runs out you pass out and get transported back to your apartment.
Vision is used to find clues quickly but also drains every time you use it.
Characters are where the game's at its prime, from our star David Young himself with the ability to travel back in time with the use of "mementos", from a girl who acts like a cat to a fashion designer and his mannequin partner.
Every time I left the game I was wondering what was waiting for me when I came back. With all that said, it suffered from a very cliché "guy became detective because wife died and now he's seeking revenge" backstory for David, granted, he was a detective before that too but the revenge theme is still there.
Everything considered, great cult classic coming up here and I hope this show/game goes on for a few seasons.
"What's the capitol of Brazíl?" and "Avant GAAAAAARDE" will be burnt into my skull for a while! Thank you Swery65.

D4 is a episodic, horror, thriller, detective game where the player play's as David Young, a detective who can use objects to go back in time o try and solve the murder of his wife. A bullet to the head has wiped his memory of what happened during the time of his wife except for the the last thing his wife told him, 'Find D.'

This is the stepping stone to what is D4, a insane and very weird game, but coming from the makers of Deadly Premonition this road has been crossed before, As said you play as David Young, a man who can use objects he calls 'Momentoes' to travel back in time and find a person name D, the one behind his wife's murder. Just like Deadly Premonition the story and characters shine on there own, each and every one of them having there own personality that is easy to either love or hate. From slow but creepy talking doctors to wild cat ladies, you'll pretty much find at the least two people you'll love the entire time playing.

As for game play it's a slower pace game when the action starts to slow down. Playing with the kinect you were able to swipe your hands side to side to turn and look around the area around David, interacting in different ways as you play on. I was fairly surprised at just how responsive the kinect worked. Only a few problems here and there like turning due to my own apartment limitations. In the end the only time I ever had to switch to a controller was during a puzzle in episode two. As responsive as the kinect was, the puzzle was not very fun to do after 10 mins of trail and error. Mostly due to the fact that I suck at these sort of puzzles but you get my point.

The most fun you'll have are the action/fight scene's where anything can happen. Expect the un expectable during these scenes since anything can happen. From grabbing, blocking, yelling, nothing is off limits and not once did the kinect miss read what I did. Once the action starts to slow down so does the gameplay, most of the time being put in situations where you have to collect and put all the clues together to figure out whats going on. This alone is one of the few problems I had with the game since it didn't really make you feel like a detective. Once you finish speaking to people and doing a few things here and there everything is put together with out any real interaction.

With more episodes being released over time the first two episodes have really left a good mark for whats to come and to expect anything to happen to be thrown your way in future episodes.

I guess I expected more out of it from all the good reviews I read, but I didn't really like the story and found the art style of the character face's to contrast way to much against the cartoony body models, and the voice acting is just horrible, which is kind of important in a narrative driven game. Overall it just feels like one of those 90's pc point and click games.

From the outset it is obvious that the entire game is meant to use the Kinect so I dusted the thing off and spent twenty minutes actually trying to find a place where it would work. It doesn't. Looking around requires some bizarre full body lean rather than a simple turn of the head and for some reason it was inverted so leaning left went right and vice versa. Then to interact with anything you have to clench your fist, which only seems to get recognised one tenth of the time. After ten attempts of leaning to the left, looking to the right and frantically trying to grab at an object I just gave up and turned on the controller instead.

Whilst this makes the game actually playable the controls are still genuinely hideous and awfully clunky. Without actually using the Kinect the game kind of has no point and the whole grabbing and pushing mechanic no longer makes any sense.

Perhaps there is a good story in the game but I couldn't get past the first five minutes without giving up entirely. The painful controls, bizarre stamina mechanic and overdone cell shaded style just get in the way completely.

Worst game I played in a long long time. Motion controls just don't work. Normal controls are worse. Story is a complete mess. Ugh, I don't want to go on talking about this.

It's basically, "teehee look how weird and quirky I am" the game. Nothing really means anything or has anything to do with anything, just a series of stupid events that combine to form absolutely nothing. Not very good.

An interesting game. I was excited for a story that was quirky and had an offbeat sense of humor. Kinect-wise, they are horrible...there is a slight lag which makes controlling with your hand awkward and unwieldy. Controller-wise is better, but is also awkward and gets some getting used to. I almost quit the game in the beginning because of the unintuitive controls and the uninteresting beginning. But I kept reading good things about the game so I decided to try to finish the game. Overall, the game wasn't that interesting or exciting to me and felt like a chore to play through. When the next episodes come out, I will be watching them instead of playing them. Expand

An episodic, point-and-click adventure game in the same vein as the works of Telltale. However director Swery's special brand of weirdness that made "Deadly Premonition" such a cult hit gives this game an identity all it's own. His unique style pervades through every part of it.

The story is instantly gripping. Unique themes are prevalent throughout and the tone is constantly shifting.

The story is instantly gripping. Unique themes are prevalent throughout and the tone is constantly shifting. Moments can range from serious and emotional, to goofy or downright odd. An interesting and compelling world has been crafted and I can't wait to see where the tale goes from here. The only thing I would like to see improved are the graphics. I get that they were going for a graphic novel style with the cell-shaded graphics, but so many other games have shown how to do it better. This is far from looking next gen.

Gameplay is also on the very solid side. As typical with the genre you'll be exploring the environments and solving some great puzzles, but Access Games has thrown in some great scenarios. Plenty of side-quests are made available by the characters you'll meet and they usually offer some goofy thrills. Quick-time events are fun, mostly because of the crazy stuff that's happening on-screen. It's just a shame that you have to put so much emphasis on watching the inputs, because you miss some of the entertaining stuff that's being caused by them.

Overall though the only real issue the gameplay has is that the controls can be a touch awkward at times. I am basing that off of the controller method, as I was not able to test out the Kinect option. Still it didn't take me long to get used to them.

"D4" is a real treat that takes the oddball charm that I loved so much in "Deadly Premonition" and applies it to a compelling episodic adventure. With so much mystery in it's story and such a delightfully weird cast of characters the wait for season 2 is going to be grueling. Luckily there are plenty of reasons for me to dive back in to 100% percent this while I wait. These first three episodes can provide a unique experience for adventure game fans and I recommend you give it a look. My total score is an 8.9/10.

You basically take the concept of Telltale games and remove the portion that make it good (the scenario), and add completely random characters and events that are just out of context in the situation and you get this game. The graphics are not so bad, but the thick black outline around the edges is really not helping it. The resource bars that limit the number of actions you can do is completely useless and just annoying, and the article clipping you collect are completely uninteresting. Expand

D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die is, by far, the weirdest video game that I have ever played. Words cannot express how strange I felt upon completion of it. Honestly, it cannot be said whether it was good or bad, but I can say it was intriguing.

The world of D4 is intriguing - the characters are weird and wonderful, the humour is fun but the most surprising thing about D4 is how well it integrates Kinect controls with the game. It's a lot of fun, especially the action sequences. Very enjoyable experience and hope the following episodes will be just as, if not more entertaining.

Crap animation, no lip sync, long winded meaningless conversation with talking heads.Oh and the music is just plain bad. And the kinect based game play really hurt to watch. And the second episode being 1 hour long... what a joke.

I don't know what the reviewers were thinking. This game looks and feels like an early Kinect experiment - and it can be redeemed if you still have a Kinect sensor attached. But if you don't, just run away - flailing joy sticks around in QuickTime events is way less fun than flailing your hands around. The story is beyond the pale: sometimes it's fun because it's SO weird, but when II don't know what the reviewers were thinking. The story is beyond the pale: sometimes it's fun because it's SO weird, but when I realised that most of the jokes are on women with no agency, rampant homophobia and absurd plot twists, I just regretted the 3 hours I spent on it. The only thing that kept me going is the gazillion of tiny achievements and collectables. But that's also the worst insult of the game: you finish it with less than 200 gamerscore, and then you have to play it again to get more. And of course the more you look at the jokes the worse they become.
If you do have Kinect, it might be worth a look - once you've finished Dance Central, Fantasia, Fru and even the golf games. It's for free in game pass. Just don't take it seriously - thankfully it doesn't take itself seriously either.

I hadn't followed this studio previous work (Deadly Premonition, right?) but i watched the trailer of the game and i can say that it looked pretty interesting. That main character is funny, interesting and just kinda gives you a good vibe and his detective partner is good to relax the situations (and apparently is a good cook). While in the game you meet all kind of bizarre characters and they mostly have good characteristics (some are over the top but that is what gives the game a lot of its personality) the game gives a TV Serie vibe (with even an intro) and playing it will probably give you a smile.
The gameplay is a little slow when using Kinect but it is definitely the way of playing it (except those pesky parts that you need to do something on time). The action scenes are the best i have played for an action game on Kinect, they detect you correctly, are not too complicated, look cool and are really funny.
The game is a little short but i can tell that is mostly good except for little filling. The only thing that really bother me was the Stamina system which really was pointless and cut the experience a lot.

9--Give it a shot if the trailer appeal to you, is a pretty solid game and i can't wait for the next episodes.

Gráficos regulares, pero compensa con historia y banda sonora. Un gran juego si lo consigues de oferta. Lamentablemente no hay fecha para la temporada 2. Sin mucha utilidad con Kinect, es mejor el mando.

A brilliant wedding of motion and voice controls to the action-detective genre. Swery has made one of the best Kinect games of all time, with an interesting story and wonderfully eccentric characters.

It probably would be more intuitive to play an adventure game with a steering wheel and pedals, when compared to the controls that D4 brings to the table. On top of that, the game is crippled with a stupid hunger minigame, that requires you to hunt food, or else you run out of stamina. The story is quite compelling and the wacky characters try their best to keep the game afloat, but the controls and the core mechanics just aren’t up for the task. [Feb 2015]
